The beginning
Igneel's earliest memory was from before he was even "alive". Igneel was a lowly river stone just lying there in the river like all the other little stones. The river water rushed over each stone on the riverbed, brushing the edges round and smooth and flat, when a few drops of warm, crimson blood landed on his surface, slowly seeping into the core of his being while the rest of rushed down the stream. Slowly, he began to hear and know things he hadn't before. "Uncle," a young male voice cried in agony. "Mother! Please!" The young boy was dying. Igneel knew he couldn't be saved, but he still desired to help. He knew the boy wasn't alone, as there was a female screaming and sobbing farther away. Igneel still couldn't see, but he sensed the woman in the river, the water rippling and separating around her. He heard her cry, "Grab my hand, please!" Something soft brushed against Igneel and he somehow knew it was the boy's hand as he drifted past, no longer alive. Igneel felt a surge of energy rush into him and suddenly saw, felt, and tasted like a human did. He saw a watery female face with long dark hair sobbing while her arms held the young boy close as she knelt against the riverbed. The boy must have been her son, he concluded as he noticed the boy had the same dark hair as the woman. Farther down the riverbed, there was a man holding a sword. The man had the same black hair, but Igneel noticed the way he looked at the woman and her son and shivered in fear. He watched, unable to move or do anything to help, as the man tightened his grip on the sword and rushed forward, arm raised to strike. The woman slowly lowered her boy to the ground and looked at the man, eyes glowing a fierce violet color, crying out in some language Igneel not yet understood. "Oculum pro oculo, dentem pro dente, filium pro filio," she screamed as she waved what appeared to be a stick with a rock on top in the air. The man cried out in pain as a blinding white light surrounded him, cursing him. This woman was a witch and the man had killed her son. She wasn't going to let him get away with it. Igneel knew that. The man fled, dropping his sword, and the witch knelt again, searching the riverbed until her eyes landed on Igneel. She reached out and cooed at him as she gently picked him up and held him in his hand. He blinked at her as she whispered some more words in that weird language over his little rock. "Tace fili, surgant tenebrae de profundo et deducant te in somnum, quia tu es filius corporis mei, caro animae meae, et morieris in rediens primogenita fratris mei." her voice came out as a melody, and suddenly as her breath brushed against his surface, he understood her words. Be silent, my son, let the darkness rise from the depths and bring you to sleep, because you are the son of my body, the flesh of my soul, and you will die at the return of the birthright my brother stole. As the words took meaning, he felt a sharp pain all around him as he slowly formed limbs like the human witch. Igneel watched as the woman said some more words and the human boy's body was buried via magic. The woman gathered Igneel in her arms and picked up the sword before taking him to her home, raising him as her own.
