Chapter 2: Helpful Neighbors

1670 Words
Catrina’s POV I slowly peeled my clothes off once in my bathroom and got in the shower. I stood there as the water hit me and turned the shower floor red with blood. I sent a text to Daniel asking if his mom was home. I figured with a head wound and bleeding I needed to have her look me over. His mom was a registered ER Nurse and knew about my abuse and would look at any wound I thought needed extra help or attention. She begged me to go to the police, but I always refused. I bathed and washed myself as good as I could since moving hurt like hell. Once done, I got out and dried off, walking to my closet. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw the new bruises already forming. I was more blue and purple than white. I looked away and got dressed in an oversize shirt and yoga pants. I put my towel away in my bathroom and I walked over to my bed where my phone was charging on the bedside table and saw that he texted back that his mom was home. I told him I would be over in 5. I put my phone in my pocket and walked over to my door. I slowly opened it and listened and didn’t hear anything. I closed my eyes and listened and just heard snoring. Since she was asleep, I grabbed my house key and quickly and quietly snuck out of the house and over next door. When I got there, Daniel was on the porch waiting for me. Once he saw me, his eyes got big and shook his head. He opened his mouth to say something, and I cut him off. “Don’t,” I told him, walking over and opening the door. I walked in and saw his mom in the kitchen. “Hi Mrs. Maddox,” I said softly. She turned around. “OH MY GOSH! What the hell Trina?” She asked with clear concern. “I don’t want to talk about it. I need you to look at the back of my head. It was bleeding earlier.” She pointed to the kitchen table, so I went over and sat down. Daniel set her medical bag on the table, and his mom opened it, then looked at my head. “Mom, how bad is it?” Daniel asked. I looked at him, and he was gritting his teeth and clenching and unclenching his fists. ‘Dang it, he is really pissed.’ “It’s still bleeding some, but not too bad. Do you want me to treat it sweety?” “Do what you need to.” “Do you want me to also look at your arm?” She asked. I looked at my arm and noticed it didn’t look good. “That might be a good idea.” “I’m going to my room to make a call. I’ll be right back,” Daniel said in a tone that clearly showed how pissed off he was. His mom got to work treating my head wound and then worked on my arm. She put some ointment on it and then wrapped it. I looked at her and could see the concern, worry, and fear she had for me in her eyes. Though it looked like she wasn’t going to beg me to report it this time at least. “Let me get you some items to take home to treat your wounds.” She said, getting up and wiping a tear from her cheek. “Okay, I told our boss I couldn’t come to work tomorrow due to a family emergency,” Daniel said, coming back into the room. “What emergency?” I asked, confused. “You.” “What?” “You are badly hurt, and I know that bitch...” “Language.” His mom yelled at him. “Sorry. You're hurt, and I know your Aunt will have a list of things for you to do tomorrow, and you can’t get them done in this condition, so I will come over and help you get it all done so she won’t hurt you any more than she already has.” He shouted at me. “Please calm down,” I said calmly and softly. I didn’t like him yelling at me, and I was trying not to cry. “Daniel go upstairs and calm down. You shouldn’t be yelling at her. You can go over to her house around 10am to help her that way that woman will be gone.” Mrs. Maddox voiced. Daniel went upstairs and his mom gave me ointments to use on my arm and head. She also gave me a thick tub of ointment that she said would help the bruises heal faster. I thanked her and snuck back home and up to my room. I put everything in the bathroom under the sink and climbed into bed. I plugged my phone in to charge and closed my eyes as the pain made me fall asleep fast as I gave into the darkness. -The next morning- I woke up and felt worse than I did last night. I was used to this, so I got up and took something for the pain. I looked at the clock and saw that it was 9 am, so I decided to get dressed and find something to eat. I grabbed a bra, an old t-shirt and some leggings and got dressed. I applied some of the ointment for my bruises before getting dressed in the hopes that they would fade faster. I grabbed my phone and saw a message. I unlocked my phone and saw that it was a message from Daniel saying he was going to pick up breakfast for us both and come over after since he saw that my Aunt had already left for work. I pocketed my phone and headed downstairs to wait for him. The doorbell rang the moment my foot hit the bottom step. I went and looked through the peek-hole and saw Daniel. I unlocked the door, and he came in and walked straight to the kitchen. “So, I got us breakfast. Now what all do you need to do today?” he asked, pulling the food out. I looked around the kitchen and found the list on the fridge. I passed him the list, and he whistled out “Wow long list. Let’s divide and conquer, but first food.” We ate our food and then got started. I showed him where all the supplies were, and we each got started on the list. Every time we finished something on the list, we drew a line through it. After finishing the laundry and putting it away, I went and grabbed a clip and put my hair up so it wouldn’t be in my face while cleaning. After another hour, I had finished cleaning my room and bathroom and my Aunt's bedroom and bathroom. We both took a break and ate a small snack, then got back to the list. By 3pm we had the whole list done, so all that was left was to figure out what to cook for dinner. “She treats you more like a maid or slave than like a niece,” Daniel said as he helped me look around the kitchen for what to cook. “While that may be. She is the only family I have left, so I will deal with it,” I told him truthfully. “That’s crazy,” he mumbled. I noticed we had enough items to make lasagna and garlic bread, so I got everything out and got busy preparing it. I had Daniel work on the garlic bread while I did the last few layers of the lasagna before putting it in the oven. We both finished all the cooking and cleaning right at 5pm. I thanked him for his help, and he went home. 15 mins later my Aunt arrived and left me alone since I had finished the whole list. She made her plate first then I made mine. She took hers to her room while I sat and ate at the kitchen table. I was taking my last bite of food when she came out and put her dishes on the table in front of me. She grabbed a glass of ice water and disappeared back into her room. I took the dishes to the kitchen and cleaned them, then refilled my water cup and headed upstairs. I grabbed a book of mine from my bookshelf and sat down on my seating area by the window seal and enjoyed getting to have a calm evening reading my book. Around 8pm, I finished reading the book and decided to get a shower. I threw my clothes in the hamper and got in the shower, enjoying how good the hot water felt after a long day. I got out and dried off. I applied the ointment to my arm and some to the area on my head. I walked to the closet and grabbed a shirt and shorts to wear. Before getting dressed, I reapplied the ointment for my bruises, which were looking better but were still easy to see. I climbed into bed and sent a thank-you text to Daniel for his help today. I then texted Lauren to see how her day was going. She replied that she was so happy when her shift was over since she had to work with our boss in a bad mood and also had a crazy day at work in general. I told her I was sorry for her bad day and that at least she would get to work with me tomorrow. That seemed to make things better. I told her night and plugged my phone in to charge and went to bed early since I had to be at work at 10am tomorrow.
