Catrina’s POV
They say that High School is where you find your lifelong friends and are the best years of your life and while that may all be true for most people that is not the case for me. My name is Catrina, but I go by Trina. I am 17 years old and am starting my senior year of high school and as it stands I have no idea what I want to do next, and I have only 2 friends. I live with my only living relative my Aunt Linda, and she doesn’t exactly like me. I always thought it was because I look more like my dad with my dark auburn hair that hit middle of my back and olive skin, but I did get my small size from my mom only hitting 5ft and having unique eyes that are blue, green and a little gray like her too, but I realized she didn’t care what I looked like. She just hated having to raise a kid.
“Trina I need some extra hands on clean up in theater 3.” My boss Ned said walking into the booth I was working in.
“Okay I will head over that way Sir.”
“Thanks.” He said before leaving the booth.
I got up and started walking to the back to get cleaning supplies then heading over to the theater. The movie was still playing so I had some time. My Aunt and I moved here about 2yrs ago and I was able to find this job pretty fast. I am hoping to save up some money so I can move out of the house and not have to deal with my aunt anymore.
“Hey Trina, you okay?” Daniel asked me.
“Yeah girl you don’t look good.” Daniels sister Lauren said looking at me with worry.
“I’m fine just didn’t sleep much last night.” I told them waiting for the theater to empty out. Lauren and Daniel are my only two friends and are also my neighbors. They were both on the taller side with Daniel being 5ft 10in and Lauren being 5ft 6in. They both had dark brown hair and blue eyes and tan skin. They were from Florida but moved to Texas after I had been here for 3 months. We go to the same school and got hired at the same time, so we are close friends.
“Is that the truth or did your Aunt attack you again?” Lauren whispered.
“She was drunk, so she wasn’t too bad.” I said defending my Aunt. She has been violent toward me most of my life and I grew used to it. She is also the only family I have so I defend her, so I won’t end up in foster care.
“Trina I can see the bruises you tried covering with make-up.” Daniel whispered.
They both knew about my Aunt and her abusing me and offered time and time again to help but that would just make things worse. I looked at my arms where Daniel was looking and could see the bruises. Guess the make-up came off while I have been here.
I pulled my black long sleeve shirt I wore under my work shirt down “Its nothing. Just drop it please.” I said softly right as the theater let out.
We waited till everyone was out of the theater and began to clean the theater before the next movie. When we had finished cleaning it Daniel had told our boss, so he knew that it was ready for the customers. I went to put the supplies away and head back to the booth when my boss asked me to work the inside ticket counter since it was hot out. He closed the booths and moved the ticket sales inside. At least he was being nice since the booths don’t tend to stay cool. I went over to the ticket counter and unlocked the till and register.
“Thank goodness he closed the booth I was burning up in there.” Sally said to me. She and I tend to work together, and we are nice to one another, but we are not really friends just co-workers.
“Well, I think he is in a good mood today which helps us out.” I replied.
“He should stay that way the rest of the shift.” She chuckled as we both got back to work when a crowd of people came in. We got through most of the shift with no problems and were doing the last sales for the last movie of the night. When a group of girls came over to buy some tickets for the movie.
“Is it true that there are going to be more kids this year?” One of them asked.
“I told you my Dad said that their school had...let’s call it an accident and the school is closed till next year so the students were divided among the two closest schools, and a bunch will be starting at our school this year.” Another one said.
“OMG! Hopefully there will be some hot guys. The ones at our school are boring these days.”
“I agree we needed some fresh meat and thank you Jesus we got it.” One said as they walked away.
“Guess the rumors are true then.” Sally voiced once they were gone.
We both closed our registers and went back to take care of the till.
“What rumor?”
“They said that the private school had an incident in one of the labs and it burned down a good portion of the school. Due to that the student body is being sent to whatever school is closest so some will be coming to our school.” She said with a shrug.
We finished helping close the theaters. I finished before Lauren or Daniel, so I waited up front for them to get off since I didn’t have a car. Thankfully they help me get to work and to school even if we have different shifts. I sat down and looked at my phone noticing 2 missed calls from my Aunt along with several nasty texts.
‘What did I do this time.’ I thought as I read them.
Laurn slid in next to me “Girl did you hear?”
“If you’re talking about the rumor of the new students this year then yes I heard.” I said not really caring since I was too worried about my Aunt’s mood.
“Do you need to stay the night?” She asked. I looked up and saw her reading my texts.
“That would make it worse, and you know that.” I told her with a sigh putting my phone back in my purse. She let out a sigh knowing I’m right. She started messing with her phone while we waited for Daniel to finish up.
After about 10 minutes “You two ready?” He asked walking over to us. We both nodded and headed out to the car together. “Are we stopping for food or going straight home?”
“Straight home. Too tired and I have a lot I have to do tomorrow since I have it off.” I told them.
“Lucky I work tomorrow and I’m on theater cleaning crew.” Lauren said not pleased.
We all climbed in the car and started our 30 minute drive home.
“Bro did you hear that the rumor mom mentioned about school is true?” she asked excited.
“Wait. Really?”
“I heard some girls talking about it and Sally confirmed it with me so yes.” I answered in a monotone voice.
“What’s wrong?” He asked me in a brotherly voice.
“Her Aunt is in a bad mood again.” Laurn whispered.
“Oh.”
The rest of the car ride home was quiet, which I was thankful for. We pulled up in their drive way and they both turned and looked at me.
“Scale of one to ten...how worried should we be?” Lauren asked concerned.
I looked over at my house and closed my eyes. I found out from a young age that if I try hard enough I was able to hear the thoughts of family and sometimes my friends. It was easier to hear family though.
‘Where is that annoying brat? She should be home by now. I told her to clean the house and to cook dinner and instead nothing got done and there was only a note!’ I heard my Aunts thoughts sadly.
“I say about an 8. Depends on if I answer her questions the way she wants or not.” I told them opening my eyes.
“Just call if you need us.” Daniel said.
“Thanks, I will.” I said getting out of the car and heading toward the house.
I took out my house key and unlocked the door. Once inside I locked it back. I turned around just in time to duck out of the way of a wine bottle my Aunt had thrown at me.
“Where have you been?” She demanded walking over to me with a fire in her eyes.
“I’m sorry my boss called me into work today since lots of people called out. I got some laundry done and put away before I left but I didn’t get to the rest of it.” I told her starting to stand up straight.
She grabbed my hair and pulled me over to the kitchen and slammed my face on the counter.
“When I tell you to do something you get it done. You should have told your boss you couldn’t make it in.” She screamed in my ear then released my head and I backed away from her.
“I’m sorry. I will do that next time but since I went in today I will have extra money to use this week for groceries.” I rattled out keeping my distance from her. She looked at me pissed off by what I said, “Or you can use it for getting more booze if you want..” I tried to calm her down.
She thought about it for a moment. “I guess that is a good thing then since we are low on food and alcohol. You get paid on Monday or Friday?” She asked calmly. I knew that my answer was going to piss her off.
“Friday.” I said softly.
“What!” She yelled and then came running at me.
I let out a scream and ran away from her. I tripped over one of her heels on the ground but got back up quickly and ran up the stairs to my room. Sadly, not making it even half way up the stairs before something hit me hard in the back of my head. I fell down hard on the stairs. ‘That will leave more bruises.’ I thought. I touched the back of my head and felt something wet. I moved my hand so I could see my hand and it had blood on it. I looked at what she threw and saw a candle and also my arm that was now on fire. I quickly put out fire and stood up as the world tilted as my vision got fuzzy. I slowly climbed up the stairs only for my Aunt to grab me by the hair making me fall backwards to the ground where she kicked me several times in the ribs.
“You will get that pay check on Monday or you will be sleeping in the backyard.” She yelled with one more kick and walked off.
I crawled the rest of the way to my room and locked the door once I was inside. I used my dresser to slowly stand up. “What did I ever do to deserve this?”
