CHAPTER 004

LILY NUNES' POINT OF VIEW Seven hours. Seven exhausting, never-ending hours. They've been in my apartment for seven hours. Sitting, waiting, refusing to leave. The smell from the Chinese food they ordered three hours ago almost broke my concentration. Unable to resist anymore I messaged one of my long-term casual lovers to ask him to deliver lunch. He agreed. As soon as he spotted them standing at my door he bolted away as if flames engulfed my apartment. He refuses to respond to any messages I send him. I knew that trying to contact anyone else would result in the same outcome. My home became my prison cell! Her stubborn pride leads to starvation which ultimately results in her death as a reporter. Next up, Léo the circus cat." I believed that all legitimate news broadcasts only appeared between shows to serve as filler for the less intelligent content viewers actually preferred. The lack of a bedroom bathroom would leave me in serious difficulty. Because my apartment was on the third floor the idea of jumping out the window was far from practical. The duration of the day made it impossible for me to spend the whole Saturday night inside because my cowardice prevented me from confronting my— "Mates! Mates! Just say it!" my wolf practically sang. She lay in the comforting aroma of them but needed me to unlock the door. But I refused. I did not foresee their extended stay at my place. I believed they would become bored, have other commitments to keep, and possibly need to visit the bathroom. A point would come when they had to order more food since my fridge held only beer, wine, and bottled water. At twenty-one years old surviving on cafeteria meals and random local restaurant finds seemed pathetic. The time spent cooking didn't justify how much work it took because the results were too insignificant. It felt as awful as discovering someone performed poorly during a s****l encounter. It made my skin crawl with dread. "Go out there! Brisa huffed and declared that her stubbornness had become ridiculous. "This is a matter of principle now! I refuse to let them break my spirit! I searched my backpack and discovered two granola bars. I let out a groan as soon as I took a bite from the first granola bar. My intense hunger made me perceive this dry, flavorless item as heavenly. The voice from the other side of the door joked that nobody should have fun in there without us. I threw a pillow in frustration. The pillow landed on the floor nearly touching the door. I pulled the covers over my head while releasing a heavy sigh. They possessed the ability to destroy the door if they wished to do so. They would not even hesitate. They would make a payment to the school for the damages then finish the matter. "Lily, you cannot stay in there forever. Just talk to us," another voice said. That must be Enzo. He seemed like the weaker link. Mental note. After eating my second granola bar I stood still while listening intently for any movement. I detected someone moving around in the living room before the noise shifted to the kitchen. Then— Silence. I heard the sound of the front door shutting after a few seconds of silence. Was this a trick? Were they trying to lure me out? Both my windows overlooked different directions which prevented me from verifying their departure. I waited, straining to hear anything. Nothing. I opened the door slightly at last. Their scents were faint. I dashed from my room and did a quick inspection of the living room and kitchen. They were gone! I ran to the front door and secured it in place. Just in case. My stomach growled as a reminder that I had eaten very little. I opened the fridge when my eyes settled on it and discovered that the top shelf contained Chinese food containers and egg rolls with drinks alongside them. I grabbed several, checking the contents. They were almost all full. "See? They are thoughtful! "They really want to look after us," Brisa declared with satisfaction. "Yeah, real gentlemen," I muttered between bites. They dress in snug spandex and make playful attacks on other men. These stupid athletes make decisions based on their male anatomy. We need a real partner. Someone with an actual brain." I prepared a plate, heated it up and positioned myself at the breakfast bar. That was when I saw the note. The handwriting demonstrated perfect cursive form in every letter. The note's flawless handwriting distracted me so much I nearly missed reading the words. But when I did— I choked. I choked and coughed forcefully to try to swallow but the piece of chicken stuck in my throat stopped me from breathing. My eyes watered. I pounded my chest, struggling for breath. I pushed to scream but only silence followed. The house stood empty during that Saturday afternoon. I was going to die. "Do something! Run into the counter!" my wolf yelled in panic. I acted on instinct. I charged ahead and crashed my stomach against the island's edge. The force of the impact made the chicken escape my mouth and it dropped to the floor with a wet smack. In a rush of breath I fell onto the couch and began gasping for air. "f*****g hell," I wheezed. I lay there, my heart pounding. My entire body shook. I gradually managed to sit up after sitting there for several minutes. While sitting up I saw something additional on the counter. A folder. After picking up the folder I began to flip through the pages inside. They had answered every question. They had expanded the document with two additional pages that seemed like they were working on the article for me. "Oh! Let us read it! I want to know all about them!" Brisa begged. I waved her off, checking the time. My stomach dropped. I had lost nearly half an hour. "Stupid! Stupid!" I snatched my phone and rapidly searched my call history before making a call. Ring. Ring. Ring. "Come on, come on! I know you are home!" I muttered, tapping my foot impatiently. They had a forty-five-minute head start. I couldn't possibly make up that lost time. And I did not have a car. Getting their numbers would require too much time. Too many questions. Ring. Ring. Ring. This voicemail box does not have any setup yet. Goodbye." I cursed. I tried a backup number. No answer. "Think, Lily! You need a car. Who has a car?" I snatched my purse and dashed out of the apartment before running to the next building. I double stepped up the stairs to get to the top faster. Bang! Bang! Bang! "Hey! Camila? It is Lily!" I knocked harder. My stomach twisted. My paranoia crept in. Maybe I should let this go. Maybe— The door swung open. There stood a recognizable werefox in just a robe with her hair in disarray and her lips looking inflated. She smelled like s*x. "Oh, hey, Lily. This moment isn't ideal unless you're interested in joining me. Under normal circumstances I would have forced her inside to tear away her robe. I was on the brink of losing my mind today. "Actually, I need a favor. Got my visitor out of the blue. Can I borrow your car? I have to pick up something from the pharmacy. She sighed, tossing me the keys. "Bring it back tomorrow. I may not hear the door." After two hours and ten unanswered calls I reached my limit and felt like exploding. Upon arriving at the Silver Mountains packhouse gate I noticed one of the guards walk toward me as if he didn't recognize my car. I rolled down the window. "Oh, hey, Lily! Just met your mates! Super cool guys. Really funny." I hit the accelerator hard to zoom past him. I came to a halt near their shiny black pickup truck after skidding. Even though my hands were shaking I opened the car door and jumped out. Voices carried from the backyard. Laughter. I stomped around the house and froze. In front of a small fire my parents sat. With them? Thiago and Enzo. "Oh, sweetie! The boys said you might be coming! Why didn't you tell me you stumbled across your friends? They are so handsome. And such good manners!" Manners? Had I not been seething I would have erupted into tears from laughter. “Mrs. Nunes Li wanted to keep us to herself but we felt it right to introduce ourselves,” Thiago said while taking her hand and kissing it. *Aww so cute,* my wolf cooed. I formed tight fists with my hands and made a growling sound. f*****g donkey! I requested Enzo and Thiago to come inside as I spoke through clenched teeth.
