CHAPTER 1
Trisha's POV “Are you just coming? You're really one useless thing you know,”Aunt Sarah said, wanting to spite me. I was about to answer when she said, “of course you've been useless to this family ever since you were married. What was I even expecting from you?” Laughing maliciously as she walked off. I blinked back the tears that were threatening to fall from my eyes as I walked into the house. I was about to get to the dining room when a hand held me. I turned and stared at the person, my heart drumming and immediately all the sadness I had been feeling was elevated from the cold look of disdain on the face of my husband, Philip Carter. “Why do you like doing this,Trisha? Do you enjoy embarrassing me?” he fired at me, anger visible on his face. “My love I—” he didn't even let me finish as he held his hand up, signaling me to shut up and with that he walked away angrily. He has every right to be angry. I had promised to come very early and help with the preparation for the family dinner but lately I’ve been sleeping way longer than normal, feeling quite fatigued than I should be. I can’t say it’s not my fault but then I don’t control my biology. I was still standing there feeling hurt about Philip's reaction when I heard another tongue lashing at me. “For how long are you going to keep showing your face in this house? What are you even good at?” I raised my head to see the source of the voice, it was Aunt Sarah’s daughter, Becky. Mother and daughter duo, witches that have been after my life. I was determined to pay her no mind. I stood there pretending as if I didn't hear her. “Have you gone deaf?” I still didn't answer. I turned to walk away from there when she said, “Yeah that's the attitude of a Barren bitch.” I couldn't hold up the emotions I was trying to conceal anymore. Tears immediately stream down my eyes as I turned back and fired at her, “Why are you all pinning the blame on me? I am not barren and you know that. Have you guys maybe thought if Philip might be the problem?” I screamed with fury in my eyes. Philip and I have been married for 5 years with no child and despite multiple doctors declaring us both fertile, his family still manages to heap the blame on me but I know it’s just an excuse. They never wanted me to marry him. SLAP! I held my cheek as I felt the taste of blood on my lips, staring at the person who slapped me, it was Philip's Mom. I averted my gaze and stared at the other person standing next to her, Philip. His face held a passive disinterested look. “How dare you say that about my son? Are you trying to pin your barrenness on my child?!” She shouted with anger in her voice. For a second I was at loss for words. I wanted to speak but the only thing that kept coming out were loud sobs. “That's not what I meant mom,” I managed to say. “Oh! Shut up! I know what you meant. Do not ever say such about my child again else, you would cease to be a member of this family,” she threatened me with a final warning as she walked away with Philip who silently followed her and Gracie who was smiling at my misery. My heart broke into a thousand pieces as I stared at Philip's retreating figure. He couldn't even defend me, he never does. I wipe my face, everything in me wanting to leave this house but my feet drag me to the dining room behind them. Leaving will only make things worse but I don’t know how long I'm going to keep enduring this unfair treatment. “Good evening Grandpa,” I greeted as I sat close to Philip. “Good evening my darling Angel. Why are you late? Or are you tired of seeing this old Grandpa's face?” He jokingly asked as he laughed. “No Grandpa, I'm really sorry I came late. It wasn't intentional,” I smiled back at him. Grandpa Carter was still laughing when his smile turned into a frown as he stared at my face. “What happened to your face?” he asked as he kept his gaze on me. Grandpa Carter had been the only family member that hadn't changed towards me. He adores me so much and was always ready to defend me against the rest of the Carter's. I really do not want to cause more trouble so I decided to lie to him. “I fell in the bathroom this morning Grandpa,”I said as I darted my gaze between Philip and his Mom. “Be Careful next time, okay?” Grandpa Carter said as he stared at me with doubt in his eyes. Of course I knew he didn't believe what I just said. I was in no mood to eat. I just wanted the dinner to end soon, so I can leave this place and go back home. I was still in my thoughts when I heard, “So Trisha, when are you going to conceive and give this family an heir? you can't just be barren forever unless you no longer want to be the daughter in-law of this family." It was Philip's Mom. The rest of the family burst into laughter. I turned to look at Philip who just sat quietly eating his food without saying anything, making my heart clench. Grandpa Carter was about speaking when Nanny Patricia walked in and whispered something to Philip's Mom and rushed out. Few seconds later, Nanny Patricia came back and with her was a lady who held a little boy in her hands. “Good evening Grandpa, Aunt,” the lady greeted, a pleasant smile on her face, “philip.” Philip stared at her, his eyes full of shock and anger. It was clear that whoever she is, he’s not pleased to see her and then the lady nudged the boy forward towards him. “Eric dear, Go say hello to your father.” I froze as my heart sank and lurched in pain. Philip has a son? How?
