Chapter 3

“Adeline! What are you waiting for? Knock him out now!” I heard Theo yelling at me from the side of the ring. I sprang forcefully and pinned the big guy to the ground. He was so strong that he nearly broke my neck. I only lasted two seconds before my counterattack failed miserably. Very soon, I was at a disadvantage again. That was when I realized I should not have overestimated myself after making some insignificant achievements. Challenging this powerful Beta was a mistake. “Theo, I can’t… I really can’t…” “Adeline. Think hard! What tricks do you use when your opponent is stronger?” I heard Theo’s voice again. I was short of breath, and my mind went blank. I tried to think of what he had taught me. Yes. Intelligence. Theo taught me how to be an intelligent fighter when my opponent was much stronger. I must employ my strengths against the opponent’s weaknesses. I tried to stay calm. I knew I only had a single chance to defeat this man twice my size. My quick thinking and observation paid off. Immediately, I spotted an opening and kicked his bent knee with all my power. When he loosened his grip because of the pain, I ducked under his body and got to his back. Kylie: Well done, Adeline! Here comes our opportunity. Me: Now! With every inch of my strength, I slashed my hand into the back of his neck. The man screamed in pain and passed out. Even though my hand was in pain as well, I was overjoyed to really notice it. “I did it! Theo!” I jumped into his arms with excitement, and he caught me without breaking a sweat. I hugged him tightly, raised my hands, and playfully reenacted my neck-cutting tactic. Theo burst into laughter. “My darling sister, you were amazing. I’m certain you’re destined to be an honorable warrior of the Blood Moon Pack. I’m proud of you.” I held my head high like a triumphant peacock, and my heart swelled with pride. I asked Theo for my reward. “Theo, when will you take me to the valley? You promised that I would be stronger there. I can’t wait any longer.” When we first started training, he told me about a holy valley in the land of the west. Any werewolf who arrived there would become invincible, finding themselves with ultimate strength and skills. That was my goal. However, Theo said the journey to the valley was perilous. There would be attacks from the enemy packs, and I might die in the extremely harsh environment. Only someone with great physical ability and strong will would be able to reach the valley. “Are you sure you’re ready?” I raised my hand and swore, “I’m ready, Theo. Please take me there.” With Theo leading the way, we headed to the magical land. Just like how he warned me, the journey was incredibly tough. Every now and then, ferocious beasts would pounce at us. We climbed the high mountains and steep cliffs. We waded through the freezing river, only to be greeted by an even more relentless and ragged landscape. After overcoming countless obstacles, Theo told me we had reached the valley. “Where?” I surveyed the peaceful plain before me. The sunshine warmed me up again, but I only felt confused. “I can’t see any valley here. Are you sure this is it?” Theo touched my head with a smile. “Adeline, the valley doesn’t exist. The journey itself is the valley.” I wished I could understand what he really meant. As I raised my hand into the air, I could feel the breeze blowing between my fingers. “Don’t you feel stronger now?” Theo asked. That was when I suddenly understood his words. The journey we took was the “valley.” By traveling all this way, I became stronger and more skilled from the dangerous obstacles I had to overcome. The real valley was not in front of me, but was instead in my heart. “Adeline, you were born an Alpha. When we were separated years ago, I sealed your power in order to protect you. That was the only way to stop our enemies from chasing you. I wanted you to survive.” Theo explained to me in a soft but serious voice. He raised his hand and placed his palm near my chest. I could feel the heat. “Now, I want to give your powers back. Adeline Rose, it’s time to face the real you.” Just as Theo finished his words, the heat on my chest started to burn my skin. I felt the pain gradually building up. At the same time, an unexplainable immense power filled my entire body. It was a power that was buried deep within my soul. Kylie: My God! I’m going to be on fire, Adeline! I feel the power! The power I’ve never had before! Me: We’ll never be bullied again, Kylie! We’re strong! My body started to shake uncontrollably. At the very end, I saw a sudden flash of light. The immense power was enough to make my blood boil. I howled with all my might, and the light soon vanished. With that, I knew I had found the new me. “What do you think, Adeline? Are you feeling anything different?” “I feel I have infinite strength, Theo.” I was almost crying out of joy. Unable to hold my excitement, I ran toward a huge rock. Lifting something as heavy as this rock was something I could not even dream about in the past, but now, it felt like I was just picking up a piece of cotton. I lifted it over my head and threw it down the cliff. “Well done. It seems you’re back to your Alpha self now. Congratulations.” I nodded enthusiastically. From this moment on, everything would be different. I also noticed changes in my hearing. My hearing became highly sensitive, allowing me to hear even the most subtle noises around us. I could feel myself becoming closer to nature, listening to the insects singing in the distance and the trickling of water on the high mountains. I could even tell the direction of the slightest breeze. When I told Theo about the change in my hearing, he was delighted. “It seems that you have been empowered with something that even the most powerful werewolves would dream to gain. Adeline, I’ll help you train your hearing. The Blood Moon Pack needs someone who can spy on our enemies and collect information about their movements. You’ll be the perfect choice for this position.” “I’m willing to do anything for you, Theo.” After we returned to the pack, I followed the detailed training plan created by Theo for my auditory training. Other than that, I also undertook all the other usual training programs. I had a lot to learn in order to become a spy. Theo said that in many other packs, spies were often sacrificed, but he did not wish for that to happen to me. He taught me how not to reveal my true identity and how to secure critical information without compromising my own safety by utilizing my extraordinary hearing. I could feel how much my brother loved me. This love was different from the affection with a nasty purpose from my foster parents and from Lucian who just wanted to take advantage of me. This was everything that I had wished for all my life. I finally found myself a sibling who truly cared about me. I knew Theo would always put me first and love me unconditionally. A few months later, I started to see my training outcomes. I could easily jump from roof to roof, eavesdropping on confidential conversations while staying out of sight. After putting my skills into practice in real situations and succeeding every time, my confidence grew immensely. I knew I would be able to prove myself very soon. One day, a fierce fight broke out between us and the Blue Moon Pack. The soldiers who withdrew from the front line said the Blue Moon Pack tried to seize a farm nearby. We could never lose that farm as it provided us with all the essential supplies. The war was inevitable. “Theo, I want to fight too!” Theo shook his head. “Adeline, not yet. You need more training so you can better protect yourself during actual battle. Don’t be impulsive. Your safety comes first.” I left his room feeling disappointed. I knew he was concerned about me, but I really could not wait to do something for my brother and myself. With that, I decided to head to the battlefield anyway. After all, I needed to prove myself to him.
