CHAPTER 1: THE SUBSTITUTE
The wedding dress was too big. It was not made for her. The ivory lace, the pearls sewn into the bodice, the long sweeping train — it was made for Celeste, her older sister. The perfect, beautiful, strong Beta daughter of the family that had adopted Luna as a charity case. Luna stood in the middle of the Alpha's grand hall, and she was drowning in it. Her thin wrists swam in the sleeves. Her collarbones stuck out sharply against the loose neckline. She was 19, but she looked like a child playing dress-up in her mother's clothes. "You should be grateful, Omega." Elder Mara's voice was sharp as she yanked the veil down over Luna's face, her nails scratching Luna's cheek. The veil smelled like Celeste's expensive perfume. "Alpha Kade's true fated mate, Lady Seraphina of the Moonlight Pack, ran away on the wedding day. Your sister Celeste was offered as a replacement and rightfully refused to be humiliated as a substitute. You are pack property. An orphan Omega who scrubs our floors. This is the only use you have ever had. So you will stand there, you will say 'I do', and you will not embarrass us." Luna's hands clenched into fists under the dress. Her knuckles were raw from scrubbing the kitchen floors that morning before they dragged her here. She had no wolf — at least, that's what the pack doctor had told everyone when she was 13 and hadn't shifted. "A defect," they called her. "A wolfless Omega." Only Luna knew the truth. On nights of the full moon, when she was alone, her eyes glowed pure white. And a voice, ancient and powerful, whispered in her head. _Not yet. They are not ready for us._ At the altar, he was waiting. Alpha Kade. The entire hall seemed to get colder when you looked at him. He was 26 years old, 6'4 of pure, brutal power wrapped in a perfectly tailored black suit. Alpha of the Shadow Pack, the strongest and cruelest pack in the entire North. They said he had killed his own father to take the Alpha title at 18. They said his wolf was black as night and twice the size of any other Alpha's. His face was like stone, handsome in a way that was terrifying. Black hair, jaw sharp enough to cut glass, and eyes like frozen silver. And those eyes weren't looking at Luna. They were looking through her, as if she didn't exist. The pack priest cleared his throat, his voice shaking in front of the Alpha. "We are gathered today..." Luna couldn't hear him. Her heart was pounding so loud it was in her ears. She could feel Kade's scent from here — dark pine, snow, and pure male dominance. It should have made her, as an Omega, want to submit and whimper. Instead, it made her chin lift. "...Do you, Alpha Kade of the Shadow Pack, take this Omega, Luna, as your Luna and wife?" A dead silence fell over the hundreds of pack members watching. Kade's jaw tightened so hard a muscle ticked. His fists clenched at his sides. He looked at Luna then, truly looked at her for the first time, and the disgust in his eyes was so clear it stole her breath. "I take her," he said, his voice low and like ice cracking. "As a placeholder. As a substitute. Until my true fated Luna returns to me. She will hold the title and nothing more." A collective gasp ripped through the hall. Someone laughed. Luna felt her face burn with humiliation under the veil, tears stinging her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. The priest turned to her, pity in his eyes. "And do you, Omega Luna, take Alpha Kade as your husband and Alpha?" Luna's throat was dry. She forced the words out. "I do." "Then by the Moon Goddess, I pronounce you Alpha and Luna... you may now kiss your Luna." Kade didn't move. He didn't touch her. He stepped forward, just enough that only she could hear him. He leaned down, his massive frame towering over her, his scent overwhelming her senses. And he whispered, his lips barely moving, his voice a cruel, possessive growl meant only for her. "Listen well, little substitute. Let's get the rules straight. You will sleep on the floor of my room, like the dog you are. You will not touch me. You will not speak to me unless I speak to you first. You will not look at me with those hopeful Omega eyes. You are not my Luna. You are not my mate. You are a bed-warmer for a title that will never belong to you. A hole to fill an empty chair. Understood?" That was it. The final straw. Something inside Luna, something that had been bowing and scraping and saying 'yes, sorry' for 19 years, snapped. She reached up with shaking hands and violently shoved her veil back. Her face was pale, her lips trembling, but her eyes — her dull, ordinary brown eyes that everyone mocked — were blazing. For half a second, they flashed pure, blinding silver-white. The color of legend. The color of the White Wolf that hadn't been seen in a thousand years. "Understood, _Alpha_," she whispered back, her voice shaking but loud enough for the front row to hear. For the first time in his life, Alpha Kade of the Shadow Pack felt his knees go weak. A surge of power, ancient and terrifying and completely dominant, slammed into him from the tiny, wolfless Omega girl in front of him. His own black wolf, Fenrir, who never bowed to anyone, whimpered inside his head and wanted to kneel. Kade's eyes widened. His hand shot out and he grabbed her chin, hard, his fingers bruising her soft skin as he forced her to look up at him. His silver eyes searched hers frantically, but the flash was gone. They were brown again. Weak. Ordinary. But he had felt it. He knew what he felt. "What are you?" he growled, his voice no longer cold, but confused and furious. Luna, tears finally spilling down her cheeks, but a small, defiant smile on her bruised lips, looked him right in the eye. "Your biggest mistake."
