MADDISON " Damnit Leah get in the car" Leah jumps in the passenger seat " Maddi you killed him you shot dad" " That wasn't dad Leah, I don't know what that was." She start sobbing " Maddi I'm scared" I pull out of the garage and head down the street the city is in shambles people running all over and these things jumping and tearing them apart. Maybe we should have stayed inside but I need to get to my friends. I took all the guns and medieval weapons my dad has collected over the years and put them in the back of my Hummer. Whatever is happening it isn't going away anytime soon. I get to Jessie's apartment and turn off the car in the parking Garage. " Come on Leah Bean let's go save Jess" I hand her a gun " If anything gets past me Leah aim for the skull" " Maddi I can't do this" " Snap out of it Bean it's us or them who are you choosing?" " Us" " Good girl let's go" I grab the double axes and we exit the Hummer, we kill 22 of those things just to get to Jessie's I knock on the door. " Jess it's me and Leah let us in" She opens the door Kitchen knife in hand. " Oh thank Gosh" I hold up my hand when she goes to hug me " I have their blood all over I need to change." " Who else is here?" " Greg, Mikey, Dylan, Marie and Z, we were getting ready for your birthday party" " Hell of a 21 this is turning out to be, I'm going to go change tell Z I want to talk to him." She nods and I lead Leah to the bedroom, I hand her some clothes and take off mine. I throw them in the tub and dump hairspray on them lighting them on fire. Zander comes in wrapping me in a hug and pulling me in a kiss " Baby are you okay?" " I'm fine, I'm okay" He turns to Leah " Bean?" She nods " Yeah" He turns back to me " Maddi what the hell is happening?" I shake my head " I have no idea but everyone is leaving the city" " I need to find a C.B. Radio or Walkie talky" He nods " My dad has a C.B. at the house" " Good I need a drink right now" My name Is Maddison Jones today is January 1st 2027, My 21st birthday. My dads name was Sargent Henry Jones, my entire life my dad has told us something bad is coming. I always thought he was crazy until he tried to eat my little sisters face this morning. My little sister Leah is 17, our mom died when we where young and it has just been us and dad for the last 15 years. He trained us how to use guns and weapons and para military attack methods. He always told me the safest place was the big businesses. That has to be our game plan, for now we just need to survive. I poor myself a glass of Vodka and sit on the couch. I am a 5'6 Ginger with bright Ocean blue eyes and freckles for days my hair has spiral curls and I am pretty athletic built. My boyfriend Zander is 6 foot brown hair and Hazel eyes, he is a champion weight lifter and the most amazing guy I know. My friends and I go to Haluna University, we are the Jocks and Cheerleaders. Today is the worst birthday and it is only 10am. I just want to survive the day that is all I am asking. Dylan turns up the radio " Maddi listen" " Marshal law has been enacted for the country, I repeat Marshal law has been enacted there will be no military help or intervention folks we are on oir own. If anyone has a plan please tell us. Get out of the city folks run and save yourselves." " Their wrong, that is what everyone will do is run from the city. That makes the city the safest place." Dylan sighs " So what do we do?" Leah; " Our dad said the bigger the business the safer we are" I nod " The strip, it's 20 block radius of businesses houses and the highschool if we can block it off somehow that is our safe zone" Greg: " Maddi there are only 8 of us how could we do all of that?" " The reason I need the C.B." " You guys brought bags for your clothes right?" Everyone nods " Good, we need to gather all the non perishable food we can on our way to the parking garage. The building is pretty much empty except for those things" Dylan: " What happened why is this happening?" " Not sure but it is country wide so it has to be serious" Mikey: " Veado burgers" " What?" " At midnight Veado launched that new burger country wide, we were going there to try it today remember" " s**t, my dad said he was getting one after his shift. There is something in them causing this, Just don't let those things catch you they are fast and will try to tear you to pieces" We all nod we unload the clothes out of the bags and get ready to head out the door Zander spins me to his chest. " Please be careful Maddi" I kiss him " You two" We walk out the door breaking into apartments we found a few stragglers and they agreed to our plan. I may sound like I have my s**t together right now but I am scared beyond belief. We get to the Hummer and I reload Leah's gun cleaning my double axes and grabbing out new weapons. I load my CZ and my Glock and carry them with me. I jump in the drivers seat and head to Zander's parents. The others are following me, Zanders dad has an entire room full of guns and weapons that will benefit us right now. They live in the outskirts of town so we take back roads to avoid the traffic leaving the city. I get out and Zander and I head inside. His parents and sister are not there but I hear Abigail crying in her crib. I run to her crib picking her up " Shh, it's okay baby I got you" I hear growling and I turn around, Amy's face is distorted she is black and blue I can see all her viens but she isn't moving toward me she is just standing there staring at me. I grab my gun from my hip and point it at her. She looks in my arms and I gulp. I set Abigail back in her crib and turn Amy jumps on me and I shoot her in the chest she tumbles off of me and I shoot her in the head getting up and packing Abigail's stuff taking her toward the car. Zander is fighting his brother in law and parents I shoot Byron in the back of the head and Zander's mom turns toward me she see's the car seat and stops. Zander slams an axe through her skull as I am frozen in my spot. " Baby you okay?" " Yeah, they won't hurt Abigail" He nods " Let's get the stuff and get out of here" I take aby to the car and strap her in Leah stays with her and everyone else gets out we ravish the house for supplies then head on our way. Our suspicions are confirmed about Veado's when we see the parking lot is flooded with those things. Dylan starts laughing and I turn to her " These things are cannibals, so not like Zombies in the movies." I laugh " Their Cannibies" Zander smiles " Canni's" " I wonder why they didn't hurt Abi though?" " Not sure maybe because she is helpless, whatever the reason I am glad" We get to the mall and park the mini convoy that has followed us we had about 15 cars join our lead as we drove through the city. I get out and we all meet up in the parking lot killing anything that comes near us. I get everyone's attention " We need in that mall if we get enough supplies to kill these things around us we can use the hardware stores to build a barricade around the strip." " It will take time but if everyone works together we can all survive this" Man: " Why would we follow you?" " You are here so obviously you want to survive, my dad has trained me for this my entire life now follow me or try to make it on your own your choice." We get in the mall and they start attacking us we get to the food court and get surrounded. I made Leah hide in a department store with Abi. We start going for heads there are about 50 of us now to about 150 of them. We get down to the dwindling and I see one jump on Zander. He is trying to fight it off how are these things so strong? I throw an axe at it's head and run toward him. " Z!!! Are you okay?" He strokes my cheek " I'm sorry baby, you need to shoot me before I turn" I start crying " No, no Z I can't please please don't leave me" " I love you Maddi, I'm sorry I never told you sooner" " No,no baby don't we will fix it we can fix it" " You can't Maddi you have to kill me" The guy from earlier walks up to me " I'm sorry hun but you have to let me do this" I start crying and kiss his lips " I love you Zander" I get up and turn my head as the man shoots him in the head. He walks up to me " My name is Daniel Barton, he called you Maddi. Are you Maddison Jones?" I nod " Your father was my Drill Sargent he told me to find you if the world went crazy, I guess it did" My tears keep falling as I look around there are only 27 of us left and out of my friends just Dylan and Mikey. I wipe my tears and whistle " We need to get the doors fortified find tables boards anything to barricade us in here" We get to work I walk to the Veado's and grab all of the food stacking it up on a cart. Daniel: " What are you doing?" " Veado's new burger started this I will not have any of their food around we don't know what is contaminated" He nods and starts helping me pack it up we take it out the service entrance then lock it up so no one can get in. I walk. back to the department store and get Leah and Abi. " Are you okay?" She nods and the other three children run to their parents. Daniel grabs his daughter and looks at me " What now boss?" " I need a drink we are safe for tonight we can gather supplies and start working to clear the strip tomorrow for now I am just done with this stupid birthday disaster" I grab Abi and head to the baby section getting a portable crib some clothes and a baby bath then taking her into the women's bathroom. Leah heads off to find some food and I give Abi a bath changing her and cleaning her up then fixing her a bottle. " I'm scared little one what if I screw this up and get us all killed huh?" " I doubt that" I turn around startled " Sorry, my name is Carly you guys saved me from the apartment. I just killed my fiance today but I watched you with those things and all of these people they don't even know you but turned their cars around to follow you. You got this, It's Maddison right?" " Um Maddi" I turn back around grabbing Abi from the table " Well Maddi, I don't know you but I trust you so far you have saved more of us then would have survived on our own" I nod " Umm thanks" I sit in the mothers corner and give Abi her bottle " Is she yours?" I shake my head " She is my boyfriends niece, they um their all gone now" She sits next to me " I was going to school for neonatal I can help if you want" I nod " Thanks, that would be great I have no idea what I am doing right now" She smiles " Well how about we get her down for a nap and you and I can gather a few people up and we can decide as a group" I nod " Thanks that sounds good" Dylan runs in the bathroom " Oh thank goodness" She runs over hugging me and Abi " Leah told me you were both okay, I'm sorry about Z we um got all the bodies out but someone else had to carry him Mikey and I couldn't stomach our friends" I nod " I couldn't do it, someone else had to I love him and he is gone Jess is gone my dad is gone." She hugs me as tears stream down my face, Abi gets done with her bottle and I put her on my shoulder to burp her Carly shows me the best way to do it. Then I set her in the portable crib and roll it to the sports bar. Most of the adults have made their way in here. Daniel smiles " Come on Maddi, little things matter now." He leads me to a cookie cake and everyone starts singing happy birthday. I know not to wish for this to be over so I don't. I know not to wish for a miracle because it won't happen. So I wish for the only thing I want right now Survival, for me for Abi and Leah and for the people in this room.
