Chapter 1

"Mother, no, please, I’m begging you! Please don’t leave me here, I’m begging you! Mother, please," Ayora woke up with a scream.

Just as she was gathering herself from her nightmare, her room door was thrown open by Leia, the pack’s butler.

"You up yet, b***h?" Leia sneered. "If you are done daydreaming, get your ass out of that bed and into the kitchen, breakfast isn’t going to prepare itself, you know," she said.

It had been ten years since Ayora met Leia. She was sold to the Black Heart Pack at age seven by her parents for money. At first, she (Ayora) thought it was a temporary arrangement, but as the months went by, she realized that she had been abandoned. Leia at that time had felt pity for the child. But all that sympathy disappeared when she (Ayora) was framed by the young alpha’s girlfriend, Doma when she was thirteen.

Doma always hated Ayora, as she had always had the attention of people ever since she arrived. Doma had always bullied Ayora but had made it seem like it was Ayora who bullied her. The young alpha, Leo, who was aware of Doma’s contempt towards Ayora always turned a blind eye to it. That was until Ayora was accused of attempting to murder Doma.

It was a summer party in the pack and Doma had asked Ayora to get her a drink as she was parched. Ayora, who knew that Doma hated her, was hesitant at first until Leo ordered him to do it.

Ayora, left with no choice, went to get the drink. Doma had arranged with a servant to poison the drink and hand it to Ayora. Ayora, who did not know about the arrangement, took the drink presented to her and handed it to Doma. Though the amount of poison will not kill the victim, it will hurt intensely. After Doma had drunk it, she started coughing up blood profusely and fainted. Poor Ayora was imprisoned for attempted murder as Doma was the daughter of a Beta.

Although Ayora’s punishment had been light because of Doma’s pleading, the pack members hated her and treated her with contempt after that day.

Ayora was responsible for the cooking of all the meals of the pack. Although the occasional bullying was not far-fetched, she managed to get through.

Ayora was allowed to go to the school in the district, although not with the other pack members, she was still allowed basic education.

At age eighteen, she was quite small and under-developed for a werewolf and was often body-shamed in and out of the school. She was 5’4 in height, with light brown eyes, long brown and wavy hair, and a small burst but curvy figure.

Normally, wolves met their mates after their shift at age eighteen. Ayora was not an exception to this rule. On the night of the full moon, every other wolf including Doma and Leo shifted successfully, but Ayora had not shifted at all. As the shifting of wolves was a public event many pack members were witnesses to it and it further degraded Ayora’s reputation. This increased the bullying as stones and sticks were often thrown at her. She was nicknamed “The wolfless maiden” and would often be whipped by Leia and many other pack members for the smallest mistakes.

Ayora was missing a wolf but had all her other senses intact. She was almost equal to the alpha in hearing and reaction speed. Nevertheless, the bullying continued. After two months of constant torment, she felt numb to it all. Ayora's once sharp senses now felt dulled by the relentless harassment. She longed for the day when she could reclaim her confidence and stand up to the alpha and his pack. But for now, she remained resigned to her fate, hoping that one-day things would change.

Everyone thought that as she didn’t have a wolf she also won’t get a mate.

Surprisingly, that was not the case.

One morning, during her final year, Ayora felt a spark when she brushed against someone.

She had often heard about the ‘feeling of mates’ as the other girls had called it. One would usually feel a spark when one’s hands or even fingertips collided with that of their mate. Even the smallest thing could make them feel sparks.

Ayora turned around quickly to find the source of the spark with hopes that her mate would at least accept her. Her brown eyes were met with sharp green ones. Those were the eyes of Leo, the young alpha. Leo was 5’11 in height and was considered the tallest among his peers. He was fairly built and had dirty blond hair. Ayora was quite stunned. She had always managed to stay away from Leo to avoid conflict with Dom. Though the match-up was unexpected, she was happy either way, as she had finally had her mate.

But the happiness was not mutual as Leo’s eyes were not in the least bit happy.

Leo was feeling furious. He questioned why he had been paired with "The Maiden without a Wolf." Meanwhile, his wolf, Dane, was quite happy. Doma's voice resonated beside him, "Leo, are you okay?". Leo had always liked Doma, although he didn't hate Ayora, he just didn't think she was suitable to be his Luna, after all, she was sold to his pack.

Ayora looked at Leo with expectant eyes, hoping that he would at least give her a chance, but all her hopes crumbled with his next words...
