🌙 Chapter One: The Night Everything Changed
The forest had never felt this restless. Sol could feel it in the air the way the wind moved too sharply through the trees, the way the silence stretched just a little too long. Even the moon, full and bright above her, seemed to be watching. Something wasn’t right. She tightened her grip on the edge of her shawl and walked faster along the narrow path leading back to her pack house. Her boots crunched softly against the gravel, each step echoing louder than it should. “Great,” she muttered under her breath. “Now I’m scaring myself.” Sol wasn’t the type to get nervous. Growing up as the third of five, she’d learned early how to hold her own. Between Daisy’s constant expectations, Kael’s reckless attitude, and the chaos of her younger siblings, fear wasn’t something she entertained. But tonight… Tonight felt different. A sudden snap of a twig behind her made her freeze. Slowly, she turned. “Hello?” she called out, her voice sharper than she intended. Silence. Her heart began to pound not out of fear, but anticipation. Whoever or whatever was out there wasn’t trying very hard to stay hidden. “Show yourself,” she said firmly. For a moment, nothing happened. Then she felt it. Not heard. Not seen. Felt. A presence. Heavy. Commanding. Dangerous. Before she could react, a figure stepped out from the shadows. Tall. Broad shouldered. And radiating power so intense it made the air feel thick. Sol’s breath caught in her throat not because she was afraid… but because her wolf stirred violently beneath her skin. No. Not now. Not like this. The man stepped closer, the moonlight finally revealing his face. Sharp features. Dark eyes. Expression unreadable. But it was his aura that hit her the hardest. Authority. Control. Strength. An Alpha. Her instincts screamed at her to lower her gaze. She didn’t. Instead, she lifted her chin, meeting his eyes head-on. “Lost?” she asked, her tone laced with defiance. For a second, something flickered across his face surprise, maybe. Or irritation. “Who are you?” his voice was low, controlled… but it carried weight. The kind that demanded an answer. Sol crossed her arms. “You first.” The air between them tightened. Most people would have backed down by now. She wasn’t most people. His gaze darkened slightly, studying her like she was something unfamiliar… something unexpected. Then it happened. A sharp, sudden pull. Like a thread snapping into place deep inside her chest. Sol gasped, her hand flying to her heart. What The Alpha stiffened too, his jaw tightening as if he felt it as well. Their eyes locked. And in that moment, everything went still. “No…” Sol whispered, shaking her head instinctively. It couldn’t be. Not him. Not this. The bond surged again stronger this time, undeniable. Her wolf responded instantly, pressing forward, recognizing him in a way Sol refused to accept. Across from her, the Alpha’s expression hardened. He already knew. Of course he did. Alphas always knew. “Impossible,” she said, taking a step back. “This is a mistake.” His voice came, firm and unyielding. “It’s not.” Two words. Cold. Certain. Final. Sol let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “No. Absolutely not. I don’t know who you think you are, but” “I don’t think,” he cut in, stepping closer. Her breath hitched as the bond reacted again, pulling her toward him despite every instinct telling her to run. “I know.” Her eyes flashed with anger. “Well, I don’t accept it.” For the first time, something dangerous flickered in his gaze. Not anger. Something worse. Control. “You don’t get to choose.” The words hit harder than they should have. Sol’s chest tightened, not from the bond but from the audacity. “Watch me,” she snapped. For a moment, they stood there two forces colliding, neither willing to bend. Then voices echoed in the distance. Her pack. They were close. Sol stepped back quickly, using the moment to break whatever invisible pull was trying to hold her in place. “This isn’t over,” she said, her voice steady despite the chaos inside her. His eyes never left hers. “No,” he agreed quietly. “It’s not.” She turned and walked away without looking back. But she could feel him. Even from a distance. That presence. That pull. That bond. And for the first time in her life… Sol felt something she couldn’t fight. Not fear. Not weakness. Something far more dangerous. Fate.
