The Optimum betrayal
Luna Ivy experienced a wave of contentment as she stood by the adorned arch gently straightening the silk of her silver gown. She took a breath calming her pulse. Over the few weeks she had meticulously organized the event making sure every detail was flawless: the beverages, the decor, the cuisine and the present she had arranged for her husband.
Tonight was special.
This evening commemorated one year since she committed her life to Alpha Damian Blackwood.
It's their wedding anniversary.
The hall gleamed with light and their guests. But one individual had overshadowed her happiness. Damian.
All night, he had been distant.
He never once grasped her hand. He never once pressed his lips to her cheek. He never once met her eyes with the tenderness she once noticed there. Rather, his eyes continually wandered around the room as though he were anticipating someone’s arrival.
Ivy managed a smile when another visitor approached her, but yet a knot of discomfort tightened in her stomach.
'What’s the matter with him? Why does he seem like he would rather be elsewhere than to be next to me?' she thought.
Just as she was about to approach him once more, the music stopped unexpectedly. The immediate quiet cut sharply, across the room. Every eye shifted toward the stage.
Alpha Damian climbed the stage and approached the microphone.
Ivy's chest pounded with terror.
He had not informed her that he intended to talk.
Damian coughed softly. "Everyone... I have an important announcement to share.”
A wave swept through the crowd. The group began murmuring, intrigued and eager.
Ivy’s hands turned chilly. A weighty feeling dropped into her chest.
Is he… is he actually about to utter something? Express gratitude? Say sorry, for his aloofness? Perhaps he’s crafted a message just for me.
But Damian’s expression wasn’t soft.
It lacked affection.
The atmosphere was charged. Resolute.. As frigid as granite.
He proceeded, "This statement… pertains to my future and the future of this pack.”
The future?
But what made him refuse to gaze at her?
Ivy took a breath as nervousness crept along her spine.
Damian lifted his hand, signaling to a person in the rear. "I would like to present someone,”
Silence descended.
Then the sound of heels echoed on the marble floor. Clara, the Luna's best friend and trusted assistant entered the spotlight.
Ivy's eyes flickered in puzzlement. "Clara? What is she—?”
However soon the murmurs began.
The looks.
The knowing smirks.
Clara’s hand intertwined with Damian's while her other hand rested gently over her stomach in a gentle manner. Her lips formed a knowing grin.
Something inside Ivy froze.
This couldn't be real.
No… no, this can’t be—
Damian’s voice thundered into the microphone unapologetic.
“I’m sharing that Clara and I… are going to have a baby. Our first child.”
A unified gasp rose from the audience.
Ivy's sight became momentarily unclear.
The floor shifted beneath her feet as she clutched the table nearest to her.
“Damian…" Her tone faltered, barely audible. "What do you mean?”
He didn’t throw her a look.
Clara remained confidently beside him, her chin lifted, a self-gleam in her gaze. Several women, from the pack started applauding. Meanwhile a few others placed their hands over their mouths.
Ivy faltered as she moved toward them.
“Damian, this is our anniversary." She reminded him. "Or have you forgotten that you're married to me?" Ivy asked.
"I understand. That’s why today is the ideal day for this announcement." Damian stated without glancing at her.
"Why—why would you choose to do this tonight? Why would you betray our union?” Ivy asked.
At last, he faced her. His eyes showed no regret though, just annoyance.
“Betrayal?" he sneered. "Ivy don’t cause a scene now.”
She gasped. "A scene? You're revealing that your mistress is expecting! Someone who was meant to be my closest friend has been involved with my husband, my partner without my knowledge. What am I meant to do? Just grin?”
Damian breathed out sharply as though she was to blame. "You’re fully aware this pack requires an heir. Clara gave me what you failed to.”
The words struck Ivy like a knife plunged directly into her chest.
Ivy looked at him incredulously. "We’ve been married for just a year. The doctor mentioned we require time—”
“I’m short on time " he barked. "The pack is pressed for time. As a billionaire alpha, I require someone competent beside me. I need an heir.”
"It's your ill luck, Ivy. Damian needs an heir urgently and he can't just sit back and wait for you to be fruitful," her mother-in-law, Sarah spat. "The world doesn't revolve around you. You've had a year to bear a fruit, and what do you have to show for it? NOTHING."
Murmurs intensified in her wake.
"She lacks strength."
“She is unable to provide him with a child.”
"He’s worthy of more."
“Clara is perfect.”
Ivy's knees shook.
She glanced at Roland, the male Beta and his spouse. They gave Damian a nod of approval. The pack’s elites whispered in consensus brushing off Ivy as if she were merely a cast-off decoration.
That was when she realized she was alone in this. Her husband, his family, the entire pack, they were all against her.
Her husband that cheated on her was showing no remorse. What would happen next now? Would he divorce and reject her as his Luna? Because that's the possible action she could predict.
Her eyes were stinging with tears. But she would not allow them to drop in front of them.
“You're embarrassing me, Damian," she murmured.
Damian remained unfazed.
“And there’s more " he declared, returning to the microphone. "Starting now…”
He stopped, allowing the quiet to linger long.
“…I, alpha Damian Blackwood officially reject Ivy as my Luna.”
The space burst forth in disbelief.
Ivy's hand shot to her chest. "Damian, no… no… you mustn't—”
“And," he went on speaking over her, "Clara is going to assume her role as the new Luna. Our Luna. We’ll be wed in a few months.”
Clara’s face lit up. She raised her chin with pride while the audience applauded.
Some clapped loudly.
Some hesitated.
However, no one came up to support Ivy.
Damian didn’t glance at her more.
Ivy's voice cracked. "How could you betray me like this? After everything all that we've endured remember—”
He abruptly ended her, clear and definite.
“Go away Ivy. You’re making a fool of yourself.”
Her breathing caught. She blinked back her tears that were threatening to spill and looked up at Damian.
"Can we talk alone in private? Somewhere quiet and away from prying eyes?" Ivy requested, trying to keep her composure from breaking.
"Ivy, we have nothing to talk about in private no more. I owe you no explanation. I'm done with you, and that's it." Damian spat out.
"You owe me no explanation? Have you forgotten you're married to me? You cheated on me with my best friend and you feel you owe me no explanation?" Ivy asked.
"Don't feel too important Ivy. You know very well that I married you because our wolves choosed each other as mate not because I loved you. The one I love is Clara. I only married you out of pity and out of respect for my father." Damian said loudly.
Ivy couldn't believe what she was hearing. The man she thought loved her, the man she loved, was telling her that he only married her out of pity.
That was it.
The final blow.
The music was quiet. Everyone looked on at her as though she were a shattered object.
She was unable to breathe. She was unable to think. Without saying a word, she ran towards the door.
