There must have been at least a hundred people who came out for Grandma Lucy’s party. Ruby stayed by Elliot most of the time. It would be strange having to go out and make new friends now that Jessi was gone. All their lives, Jessi had arranged Ruby’s social calendar for her.
After a small fiasco with a baby goat escaping the barn and running lose, Ruby and Elliot sat on the porch swing holding hands.
“I’m really glad you came here,” she told him, wondering how hard both the funeral and this party would have been to face alone.
He leaned in a little, and she was reminded of their kiss last night.
“I’m glad too,” he said. “It sounds like things really worked out for that new job, didn’t they?”

He frowned at her. “Why so pensive all of a sudden?”
