CHAPTER 46

807 Words

CHAPTER 46 After an hour by Jessi’s hospital bed, Ruby made her way back out to the waiting room. She hadn’t cried at all. Did that make her a terrible person? If Ruby had been the one all bandaged up with a breathing tube stuck down her throat, Jessi would have thrown herself on the hospital bed and sobbed enough tears to fill a small pool. So why didn’t Ruby feel anything? Elliot was sitting in the lobby. She hadn’t expected him to stay here the whole time. He glanced up from his phone. Oh, no. Her cell. Had she left it in the car? She needed to call Mace. “Everything all right?” Elliot asked. “Yeah, I mean, no. I mean, Jessi’s okay. I was just back there.” Yes, Ruby would be this year’s top choice for Captain Obvious. She searched her pockets. “I need to call Jessi’s brother.”
