THE STRANGER WHO SAVED MY HEART
Chapter 1 — The Night Everything Changed The rain had been falling for hours. It poured over the city as if the sky itself had finally decided to release every tear it had been holding back. Rose walked alone along the dark street, holding a small black umbrella above her head. Her dress was already soaked at the bottom, and her shoes made quiet splashes against the wet pavement. But she didn't care. Tonight, she had nothing left to protect. Not her pride. Not her heart. Not even her dreams. She stopped beneath a streetlamp and looked at her phone. One last message remained on the screen. “Don't call me again. It's over.” Rose stared at those words until her vision became blurred. Not because of the rain. Because of her tears. She had loved him with everything she had. She had believed his promises. She had believed that no matter how difficult life became, they would face it together. But some promises are made easily and broken even more easily. She slowly lowered her phone. “Why wasn't I enough?” she whispered. There was no answer. Only the sound of rain. Rose had spent the last three years building a future with someone who had quietly built an escape from her. She had sacrificed her own dreams for his. She had stood beside him when he had nothing. She had encouraged him when everyone else doubted him. And now that his life was finally becoming successful, he had decided that she no longer belonged in it. She laughed bitterly. “Maybe that's what I deserve.” The words hurt as soon as they left her mouth. Rose looked around. The city was almost empty. Cars passed occasionally, their headlights reflecting across the flooded streets. She began walking again. She didn't know where she was going. She only knew she couldn't go home yet. Her apartment was filled with memories. His photograph was still on the table. His favorite cup was still in the kitchen. His old jacket was hanging behind the bedroom door. Every corner of that place screamed his name. So Rose walked. She walked until her feet hurt. Until her umbrella began to shake in her trembling hands. Until she reached a small bus stop at the edge of the city. She sat down. For the first time that night, she allowed herself to cry. Not quietly. Not gracefully. She covered her face with both hands and cried like a woman who had finally realized that the person she trusted most had become a stranger. “I don't want to feel this anymore,” she whispered. “I just want the pain to stop.” A few meters away, a black car slowed down. Inside was a man named Sherry. He had been driving home after a long day at work. He wasn't looking for anyone. He wasn't expecting anything. But when he saw a woman sitting alone at the bus stop in the middle of the storm, something made him stop. Sherry watched her through the windshield. She was crying. Yet there was something different about her. Even broken, she seemed to be fighting to remain standing. He hesitated. Then he stepped out of the car. The rain immediately soaked his black suit. Rose didn't notice him approaching. She was staring at the road. “Excuse me.” She looked up. A stranger stood in front of her. Tall. Calm. Completely drenched by the rain. Rose quickly wiped her tears. “I'm fine.” Sherry looked at her for a moment. “You don't look fine.” She gave him a weak smile. “I'm just having a bad night.” Sherry looked at the empty road. “You shouldn't be here alone.” “I'll be okay.” He didn't argue. Instead, he took off his suit jacket and held it toward her. Rose stared at it. “No, thank you.” “You're freezing.” “I said I'm fine.” Sherry smiled gently. “And I didn't ask whether you were fine.” She looked at him, confused. “I asked whether you were cold.” For the first time that night, Rose almost smiled. Almost. She slowly accepted the jacket. “Thank you.” Sherry sat beside her, leaving enough space between them to make her comfortable. Neither spoke. The rain continued falling. Minutes passed. Then Rose suddenly whispered: “Have you ever loved someone who made you feel like you were nothing?” Sherry looked ahead. “Yes.” Rose turned toward him. “You have?” He nodded. “And did you survive?” Sherry looked at her. “Yes.” “How?” He took a slow breath. “By understanding that someone else's inability to love me didn't mean I was unworthy of love.” Rose lowered her eyes. Those words entered her heart like a quiet light. “You don't know me,” she whispered. “No.” “You don't know what I've been through.” “No.” “Then why are you talking to me like you understand?” Sherry smiled faintly. “Because pain has many faces. But loneliness always sounds the same.” Rose's eyes filled with tears again. This time, she didn't hide them. Sherry didn't try to stop her. He simply stayed. Sometimes, people don't need someone to solve their problems. Sometimes, they just need someone who refuses to leave while they are falling apart. After a few minutes, Sherry stood. “My car is over there.” Rose looked at him suspiciously. “I'm not getting into a stranger's car.” He nodded. “Good.” She blinked. “Good?” “You shouldn't.” That surprised her. Sherry reached into his pocket and took out his phone. “Call someone you trust. A friend. A relative. Anyone.” Rose looked at her phone. There was no one she wanted to call. Everyone she loved seemed to have disappeared from her life at the same time. Sherry noticed the silence. “Then I'll wait until your bus comes.” “You don't have to.” “I know.” “Then why?” He looked at her. “Because tonight, you shouldn't have to be alone.” Rose stared at him. She didn't know his name. She didn't know where he lived. She didn't know why a complete stranger cared enough to stand in the rain for someone he had never met. But somehow, his presence made the night feel less frightening. An hour later, the rain finally began to slow. A bus appeared in the distance. Rose stood. She removed Sherry's jacket and handed it back. “Thank you.” He accepted it. Then Rose hesitated. “What is your name?” He smiled. “Sherry.” “I'm Rose.” “I know.” She frowned. “How?” He pointed toward her phone. Her lock screen displayed her name. Rose laughed softly. For the first time that night, it was a genuine laugh. The bus stopped. She stepped toward the door. Then she turned around. “Sherry?” “Yes?” “Thank you for saving me tonight.” He shook his head. “I didn't save you, Rose.” She looked confused. “You were already saving yourself.” The bus doors closed. Rose watched him through the window as the vehicle slowly pulled away. Sherry remained beneath the streetlight, holding his jacket. Neither of them knew it yet. That brief meeting would become the beginning of something neither had ever imagined. Rose thought she had met a stranger on the worst night of her life. She was wrong. She had just met the man who would teach her how to love again. And Sherry had no idea that the woman who had cried beneath that streetlight would eventually become the reason he would believe in love again too. But there was one thing Rose didn't know. Sherry hadn't stopped that night only because he felt sorry for her. He had seen something in her eyes that reminded him of someone from his own past. Someone he had never been able to save. And that secret would change everything.
