Chapter 50
“Here they come,” I warn Randy.
“Oh, no,” he mutters, still fumbling with the bike. “I’ll handle it. Don’t worry.”
“No,” I say. “I got myself into this. I’ll do the explaining. If you want to jump in, that’s okay. But I need to do this.” Randy grunts. I know he understands.
By the time he’s secured the kickstand, Denise and her so-called friends are waiting nearby, arms folded.
I turn to Denise. “First of all, please just listen and don’t jump to conclusions.”
Mindy turns to Denise. “Didn’t I tell you she’d say that? What would you expect her to say? Sneaking around with your boyfriend.”
Denise’s mouth puckers. She glances from Mindy to me. “What’s going on, Portia? Why didn’t you tell me?” Her voice is sharp. Something in her expressions tells me she’s not in command.
