Chapter 34 There’s a delicate balance between us that I’m afraid to disturb by talking. But someone has to speak, because we can’t let this silence go on forever. “Denise, is there something you want to tell me?” It’s all I can think of saying that won’t give anything away. Denise looks up. Her eyes search my face. The doorbell rings. Her expression collapses into disappointment. “That must be Mindy and Tara,” she says. She sounds like they’ve come to pull out her teeth. She rises and goes to answer the door. The three girls come into the kitchen. Mindy and Tara are dressed in jeans and loose-fitting Ts. Just like Denise. I guess she’s their fashion consultant. She ought to charge them. Ha ha. Denise is smiling and laughing now. As if nothing had happened before the girls arrived.
