Chapter 35 We color our hair and watch a goofy comedy while our hair dries. If my life depended on it, I couldn’t tell you the title. But it makes me laugh. We make popcorn. What we don’t eat, we throw at each other. When the movie’s over, Denise says we should go, before her parental units return, because it won’t be pretty when they see her hair. Or the popcorn strewn around the living room. “Need any help cleaning up?” I ask. “Nah. We’ve got a cleaning lady. She’ll take care of it.” For a moment, I wonder if the cleaning lady is black or Hispanic. But I bite my tongue. Again. Ouch. Tara and Mindy, who live only a couple of blocks away, make for the door. “Think your parents will flip out?” Mindy asks, pointing to Tara’s purple-streaked locks. “Nah. They’ll be fine.
