Ghost Girl
Aira’s POV The hairs on my body stood on end again, my eyes at sudden alert. I was not alone on the lonely road, on my way to meet my latest client. I could feel their presence looming behind me again in the distance, and I could immediately tell that they weren't ghosts. They were far more dangerous, I thought as my senses picked up, their unwelcome presence growing thicker and thicker towards me. It would be better if they were ghosts, my heart wouldn't threaten to pour into my ribcage in fear. Whatever they were, they made me want to take to my heels, but I could never give them that much power. They've been chasing me for days, aggressively following me from a distance, and I could only wonder what they wanted from me. ……. “I'll tell you this. I know how it feels to lose someone you love and spiral because of it. My own sister coveted the man after my heart and after losing myself for years, I swore to never find myself in such a weak position again. But in your case, it's clearly different.” “Excuse me?” “Your wife said I should tell you that you’re a loser and that she will never reveal where the rest of her fortune is. She also told me that she hopes you rot in a grave of your own digging. Actually, that was me. I said that last part.” I spat at the elderly man in front of me, so sure my veins were very prominent on my forehead, stretched out and ready to burst. Unfortunately, I had the displeasure of being in his sickening presence today. I was definitely more upset with him than his wife was. I approached him slowly, making sure my next words were within earshot. “Oh, and she’s framing you soon. Sit quietly and let it happen. No one will know you killed her. She claims it will make her feel better, and she'll let you be at peace.” I watched this man vibrate and crumble in front of me, with visible shaky eyes and chapped lips. Sweat clung to his wrinkled skin even though a delicious breeze was in maddening circulation. He trembled so hard. That last part, the part where I mentioned he killed his wife, was supposed to be a secret within two. Him and his wife, but now it's within three, and he's losing his cool because somehow the news reached my ears. Only one person other than him could have told me. “You wench! I never did such a thing! How dare you accuse me? Who really are you? What exactly are you!” He suddenly started screaming out of nowhere, thick words of anger to mask his fear. This wouldn't be my first rodeo. Murderers were always like this. But I didn't exactly expect what happened next. With a snap of his fingers, guards surrounded me. They grabbed me, although I could see they had their initial reservations, scared to touch me. Danger immediately announced its presence as my heart dropped. Still, I tried to act brave. “What do you think you’re doing? You’re making a grave mistake. You don’t want to get me angry.” I warned sternly, my breath coming out in harsh exhales. This man took one good look at me, then he burst out laughing his heart out. “And who are you exactly?” After calling for my services, he decided to treat me poorly. It's no surprise he killed his wife, clearly this is how he treated women. “A woman who will add her pains to your wife's pains and make you regret this!” I cussed back, so mad smoke could possibly emanate from my head. “Oh shut your mouth!” A hard slap dented my face, fingers sinking in, painful. My cheeks deflated. I gasped in horror with widened eyes at the shock. I couldn't believe or forgive that. His shoulders shook uncontrollably as he tilted his head back, clutching his stomach as he cackled wildly with his guards, making a new gesture at them with his hands. “She’s really insane. You saw my wife, yeah sure.” I heard him say in a mocking voice in the distance as I fought tooth and nail, screaming at the top of my lungs to be free, scratching the arms of those guards, biting any skin in my line of sight as they took me away, straight to his dungeon. I was thrown in and locked up, then I let it all sink in. I wanted to curl up into a ball and finally break apart and cry because this was the last straw, but I felt her before I saw her. She weaved through the walls, her figure forming. She didn't have the dress she wore with blood all over at her death. She had changed into something else. Something clean and beautiful. She had a warm smile on her face, which motivated me to wear one as well as I received her. “You have done well, thank you, and I am deeply sorry for his behavior. I’m not surprised he locked you up. He will rot in jail for sure now.” I just nodded my head with glossy eyes and a painful smile. “Thank you. How are you though?” “Preparing to transition. I'm ready to go to rest. Please, I would like to offer you my fortune instead, in exchange for all of this.” I shook my head so fast. “Oh no, you don't have to. I'm meant to get paid by living werewolves, mortals, not ghosts.” She sighed dramatically, and I could see the gratefulness in her eyes. Ghosts like her were the reason I stood tall no matter what names I got called. They made me know I wasn't insane. “The moon goddess and the spirits must be pleased–” Then she gasped loudly, her eyes seemingly at alert as she spoke again. “He’s coming. I’ll get you out of here.” Then she was gone. Eloise and I met when her husband called me to check if there were any ghosts hovering around him and his house days ago because of the unrest he claimed he had been dealing with. I immediately spotted her floating around the house, but she told me not to reveal the truth to him just yet, that she had something to say. I saw her bloodied dress and immediately knew something was amiss. Now we've been talking extensively for days and clearly, her husband is the absolute worst. I rose to my feet to receive my newest client who I hated with my whole soul, from inside my cell. “Release me, Elder Zian. You even owe me money for my services. I stuck to my end of the bargain and told you the truth.” “You want to act smart with me, but that’s too bad. Your payment? How do you like in kind?” He grabbed onto the front his pants, around the crotch, and a bile ran up my throat from my stomach as a disgusting smirk was spread across his creepy face. This was the greatest insult of my life. I played it off and bruised his ego instead because why not? “You could never satisfy me in your wildest dreams. You don’t have the scent of the claws. Only the beasts with that mark can get into my pants and give me maddening pleasure. I bet you barely have defined claws. I see why your wife just let you kill her without putting up a fight to put an end to her misery, because even mere werewolves like her can’t be satisfied by you anyway–” I watched the moment his body tightened, his veins popped and his fists were well clenched, his smirk long gone, replaced with a ticked jaw. I must've struck a nerve and said some level of truth. Now it was my time to smile. As crazy as it sounded, getting the last laugh was attractive to me. “Release this foul mouthed woman and send her away!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, ravaging like a beast as he took off. I felt it then, the supernatural energy looming. His wife was coming, and she was not going to spare him. …… It all started when I saw a figure in the distance when I was nine with friends, a little girl asking for help, basically looking terrible. At that point I had no idea I was the only one that could see her, a dead person. I communicated with her, then I watched my friends run from me, screaming their heads off. I was soon accused of being crazy because I could supposedly see dead people. I was thrown out of home many years later because my parents couldn't handle the shame and stigma. I was also used and ridiculed, but I found strength in the midst, I had to mold myself back. I've been told I had a face considered lethal, but I also had very precise, s****l needs, so it was almost never fulfilled. I was never satisfied. What man would want to be associated with me? A ‘rogue’? They were terrified of me after rumors spread that I was full of so much darkness, an ordinary werewolf wouldn't survive me. I eventually believed it all. …….. On my way home, after I was thrown into the streets, I dusted myself and rose to my feet, but danger wasn't far from me. My ears immediately caught the aggressive marching sounds in the distance. I felt them as the ground literally shook beneath my feet, in their numbers, and this time around, they were so close, I took to my heels for the first time. My heart rate picked up, my screams the loudest, my whole body trembling. This time, I caught a whiff of their scent and I immediately knew exactly who they were, who sent them, and panic spread across my chest. They caught me, and they took me.
