Chapter Seven: Rising Shadows — Part One

1116 Words
The first rays of sunlight crept across the rooftops of Ebon City, but they brought little comfort. News helicopters circled above the abandoned scrapyard where the ancient vault had collapsed. Police barricades stretched for blocks, keeping reporters and curious citizens away from the smoking crater. Officials claimed a gas explosion had caused the destruction, but few believed the explanation. Videos from the previous night's battle had already spread across the world. People argued over every frame. Some believed Shadow Born was humanity's first superhero. Others called him an alien invader. Governments refused to comment. Kairo watched the morning broadcast from the roof of a deserted warehouse. His costume was torn. Cuts lined his arms, and every muscle ached from the battle with Revenant. He had survived. Barely. The Shadow Core remained silent. For the first time since the crystal had bonded with him, Kairo felt truly alone. He looked toward the skyline. "Are you still there?" Several seconds passed. Then the familiar voice answered. I am recovering. "Recovering?" The battle consumed a great amount of energy. "So you can get tired?" Even ancient power has limits. Kairo sat against a rusted air vent. "I almost died." Yes. "I wasn't ready." No Guardian ever is. The answer lingered in his mind. "What happens now?" You become stronger. Miles beneath the city, emergency lights flashed inside Commander Voss's underground headquarters. The collapse of the ancient vault had cost him valuable technology, dozens of soldiers, and years of research. Engineers hurried through the facility repairing damaged equipment. Voss stood before a massive holographic display of Earth. Revenant entered the room. His black armor bore fresh scratches from the battle, though none had penetrated its surface. "You hesitated," Voss said without turning. Revenant remained silent. "You could have killed the Guardian." "I was ordered to retrieve the Core." "Not destroy it." Voss faced him. "But you hesitated." For a brief moment, crimson light flickered in Revenant's eyes. "I sensed..." He stopped speaking. "What?" "Recognition." Voss folded his arms. "The Shadow Core is affecting your memories." "It is possible." "I cannot allow that." He pressed a control on his wrist. Robotic arms descended from the ceiling, surrounding Revenant. Energy restraints locked around his arms and chest. "What are you doing?" Revenant asked. "Protecting my investment." A surge of crimson energy flowed into the giant's armor. Revenant gritted his teeth as the Void Core embedded in his chest pulsed violently. Dark smoke escaped from the cracks in his armor. His expression hardened. Whatever memories had begun to return disappeared once more. Voss smiled. "Much better." That afternoon, Kairo finally returned home. His grandmother opened the apartment door before he could knock. She embraced him tightly. "You disappeared all night." "I'm sorry." She stepped back and noticed the bruises on his face. "What happened?" "I..." He searched for an answer. "I got caught in the explosion downtown." Her expression softened. "I saw it on television." She carefully touched a cut on his forehead. "You should stay home today." "I can't." "Kairo..." "I need some air." She sighed. "You've changed." The words struck him harder than any punch. She was right. Only a week ago, his biggest worry had been paying rent and passing exams. Now people were trying to tear an alien artifact out of his chest. Nothing would ever be normal again. That evening, Kairo wandered through Riverside Park. Children laughed as they chased one another across the grass. Families enjoyed picnics beneath tall trees. For a few peaceful moments, the world felt ordinary. Then every bird in the park suddenly took flight. Dogs began barking. The Shadow Core spoke. Danger approaching. Kairo scanned the area. "I don't see anything." Above. He looked skyward. A streak of fire crossed the clouds. Then another. And another. People around him pointed excitedly. "A meteor shower!" "Look!" Kairo knew better. The objects weren't falling randomly. They were changing direction. Heading toward the city. One fiery object separated from the others and crashed into a nearby construction site. The impact shook the ground. People screamed and ran. Dust billowed into the air. Kairo sprinted toward the crater. Inside stood a metal pod nearly three meters tall. Its surface glowed orange from atmospheric entry. A loud hiss escaped as steam filled the air. The pod slowly opened. Something stepped out. It stood nearly seven feet tall. Its silver armor shimmered beneath the afternoon sun. Four glowing blue eyes examined the surroundings. Its skin was dark gray, almost metallic. The creature carried a long spear crackling with white energy. Citizens froze in fear. The being spoke in a language no one understood. Then it looked directly at Kairo. The Shadow Core translated instantly. Guardian detected. The alien lowered its spear. "So... the stories were true." Kairo blinked. "You know what I am?" The warrior nodded. "We searched many worlds for the Shadow Core." "My name is Serak." "I come from the Orion Alliance." Kairo hesitated. "Friend?" Serak glanced toward the sky. "For now." Before Kairo could ask another question, alarms sounded from the alien's wrist device. Its blue lights turned crimson. Serak's expression darkened. "They found me." "Who?" He looked toward the clouds. "The Dominion." The sky rumbled. Massive black shapes emerged from the clouds, blotting out the setting sun. People across Ebon City stopped to stare. Some dropped their phones in disbelief. Others simply ran. Enormous triangular warships descended silently from the heavens. There wasn't one. Or ten. There were hundreds. Their shadows swallowed entire districts. Emergency broadcasts interrupted every television station on Earth. Governments ordered citizens indoors. Military aircraft launched from nearby bases. The invasion had begun. One enormous warship positioned itself directly above the city's financial district. Its underside opened. Thousands of smaller attack craft poured into the sky like a swarm of insects. Sirens echoed throughout Ebon City. Missiles launched from military bases. Fighter jets roared overhead. The first missiles struck the alien shields. They exploded harmlessly against invisible barriers. Not a single ship slowed. Kairo stared upward. "This can't be happening." Serak gripped his spear. "It is." "The Dominion has crossed the stars for one reason." "What reason?" Serak looked directly into Kairo's eyes. "You." Before Kairo could respond, one of the attack craft peeled away from the formation. It locked onto the park. Its weapons charged with brilliant red energy. Hundreds of civilians were still running below. Children. Parents. Elderly couples. The attack craft prepared to fire. Kairo took one step forward. Fear clawed at his chest. He remembered his promise. Heroes don't choose who deserves saving. They simply save them. Blue-black energy erupted around him. The Shadow Born rose into the sky. For the first time... He flew toward an army.
