The Dominion flagship shook violently.
Warning sirens blared through every deck as red emergency lights replaced the soft blue glow of the corridors. Soldiers who moments earlier had been hunting Kairo suddenly stopped and looked toward the deepest levels of the ship.
A terrified voice echoed over the intercom.
"Containment breach confirmed! Seal all lower decks immediately!"
It was already too late.
Far below, ancient prison doors taller than skyscrapers groaned open.
A wave of black mist poured through the corridors.
Where it touched metal, the walls rusted and crumbled into dust.
Where it touched machines, lights died instantly.
The prison had held something alive.
Now...
It was free.
Inside the power nexus, Kairo and Orion stood frozen.
The Shadow Core pulsed wildly inside Kairo's chest.
Threat level: Extinction.
"What is the Devourer?" Kairo asked.
Orion didn't answer immediately.
His usually calm face had gone pale.
"When the Guardians first united the galaxies," he finally said, "they discovered a creature older than the universe we know."
"It had no kingdom."
"No army."
"It simply consumed."
"Stars."
"Planets."
"Entire civilizations."
Kairo swallowed.
"And someone imprisoned it here?"
Orion nodded.
"The first Guardians couldn't destroy it."
"So they sealed it away."
"The Dominion secretly found the prison centuries ago and built this flagship around it."
Kairo stared at him.
"They turned a prison into a weapon?"
"They believed they could control it."
A distant roar echoed through the ship.
It wasn't the sound of an animal.
It was something far deeper.
Ancient.
Hungry.
High Commander Lysera's voice suddenly echoed across the flagship.
"All Dominion forces!"
"Forget the Guardian!"
"Evacuate immediately!"
Her command shocked every soldier.
Thousands rushed toward escape hangars.
Discipline vanished.
Fear replaced loyalty.
Outside the flagship, smaller ships detached from the enormous vessel, fleeing in every direction.
Even the mighty Dominion Empire was running.
Revenant hovered in space, watching the chaos.
His crimson eyes narrowed.
"The Devourer..."
Fragments of memory flashed across his mind.
He remembered standing beside thousands of Guardians.
He remembered sealing away a creature that swallowed suns.
He remembered...
A promise.
"If the prison ever fails... no matter what we become... we stand together."
For the first time, the Void Core's grip weakened.
Commander Voss watched the evacuation from his underground headquarters.
"What are they doing?"
His chief scientist stared at the monitors.
"They're abandoning the flagship."
"Why?"
Before anyone answered, every screen suddenly filled with static.
A massive pulse of dark energy swept across Earth's orbit.
Satellites went offline.
Military communications failed.
The scientist whispered,
"Something has escaped."
Deep within the flagship...
The prison collapsed.
A gigantic claw emerged from the darkness.
It was larger than a passenger jet.
Black scales reflected no light.
Purple veins pulsed beneath its skin.
Another claw followed.
Then a massive head slowly emerged.
Six glowing crimson eyes opened one by one.
Its mouth stretched impossibly wide, revealing thousands of crystal-like teeth.
The Devourer inhaled.
The air across entire decks rushed toward its mouth.
Walls buckled.
Steel beams twisted.
Unfortunate Dominion soldiers were pulled screaming into the darkness.
Their cries ended instantly.
The creature swallowed.
Then smiled.
"I remember..."
"Freedom."
Kairo and Orion reached the observation deck just as the beast burst through the lower hull.
The flagship tore apart from the inside.
Explosions rippled through its enormous frame.
Chunks of burning metal rained toward Earth.
The Devourer floated into open space.
It had no wings.
Yet it moved effortlessly.
Its body stretched nearly a kilometer long, wrapped in living shadows.
Every nearby starship seemed tiny beside it.
The Dominion fleet opened fire.
Thousands of plasma cannons illuminated the darkness.
Golden beams struck the monster from every direction.
The Devourer didn't flinch.
Instead, it opened its mouth.
A swirling black sphere formed inside.
Then...
Everything changed.
The energy blasts stopped in midair.
The creature absorbed them.
Every laser.
Every missile.
Every explosion.
Its body grew brighter.
Stronger.
"It feeds on energy," Kairo whispered.
Orion nodded grimly.
"The more you attack..."
"The stronger it becomes."
The Devourer turned its six eyes toward Earth.
Toward billions of living souls.
"Hunger..."
It began moving.
"No!"
Kairo blasted into space after it.
The Shadow Core flooded him with power.
Blue light surrounded his body like a blazing comet.
He reached the creature first.
Drawing on every ounce of strength he possessed, he drove both fists into its armored face.
The impact echoed across space.
The Devourer's head turned slightly.
Only slightly.
It looked at Kairo with curiosity.
"So..."
"A Guardian."
Its voice entered Kairo's mind instead of his ears.
"You taste... familiar."
The monster flicked one claw.
Kairo was sent hurtling through space.
He crashed through the wreckage of a Dominion cruiser before finally stopping.
Pain surged through every part of his body.
The Shadow Core dimmed.
Host heavily damaged.
Kairo struggled to breathe.
"I barely scratched it."
Then another streak crossed space.
Revenant.
Without speaking, the Fallen Guardian attacked.
His Void Blade carved across the Devourer's side.
Dark blood spilled into the vacuum.
For the first time...
The monster screamed.
It turned toward Revenant.
"You..."
"I remember."
"The Broken Guardian."
Revenant lifted his blade.
"I remember you too."
The two ancient beings collided.
Their battle dwarfed everything that had come before.
Shockwaves rolled across Earth's orbit.
Dominion warships were thrown aside like leaves in a storm.
Below, people looked into the night sky as blue, crimson, and black lights illuminated the heavens.
Humanity had believed the invasion was the greatest threat.
They were wrong.
The invasion had merely awakened something far worse.
As Kairo slowly rose, bruised but unbroken, Orion appeared beside him.
"The war has changed."
Kairo looked toward the battle between Revenant and the Devourer.
"What do we do?"
Orion's expression was solemn.
"We save the man inside Revenant."
"Because without him..."
He looked toward the monstrous creature advancing toward Earth.
"...there is no one alive strong enough to stop the Devourer."
The fate of Earth now depended on a fallen hero remembering who he once was.
End of Chapter Eleven.
