Kairo woke with a violent gasp.
He sat upright on the cold concrete floor of the scrapyard, rainwater dripping from his jacket. His chest rose and fell in quick breaths as he looked around, trying to understand what had happened. The crater was still there, but the floating black crystal had vanished.
Or rather, it hadn't vanished.
It was inside him.
He pressed a trembling hand against his chest. Beneath his palm, a faint blue glow pulsed beneath his skin before fading away. It felt like a second heartbeat, steady and powerful.
"What... am I?" he whispered.
The question echoed through the silent scrapyard.
A distant police siren snapped him back to reality. The three armed robbers had fled after witnessing the impossible. Kairo didn't wait to find out if they had called for help. He grabbed his backpack and hurried into the rain-soaked streets.
The walk home felt different.
Every sound seemed louder. He could hear conversations inside passing cars, dogs barking several blocks away, and trains rolling across distant tracks. Bright streetlights shimmered with streams of electricity that danced through the air like glowing rivers.
It was overwhelming.
He covered his ears, but the sounds didn't stop.
By the time he reached the small apartment he shared with his grandmother, dawn was beginning to break.
"You've been out all night," his grandmother said the moment he stepped inside.
She looked tired, but relief softened her face.
"I was worried."
"I'm sorry," Kairo replied, forcing a smile. "I lost track of time."
She studied him for a moment.
"You don't look well."
"I just need some sleep."
She nodded, though concern remained in her eyes.
"There's food on the table. Eat before you rest."
Kairo thanked her and disappeared into his tiny bedroom.
The moment he closed the door, he looked into the cracked mirror hanging on the wall.
For a second, his reflection wasn't his own.
Dark energy rippled across his skin.
His eyes glowed an icy blue.
Then everything returned to normal.
He stumbled backward.
"No..."
He blinked several times.
The reflection stayed normal.
Maybe he was hallucinating.
Maybe he had hit his head.
He lay on the bed, hoping sleep would erase the nightmare.
Instead, the dreams became stranger.
He stood beneath a sky filled with stars unlike any he had ever seen.
Towering cities floated among planets.
Millions of armored warriors fought beneath black suns.
At the center of the battlefield stood a figure wrapped in living shadows.
Its face remained hidden.
Its voice echoed across the universe.
"The Shadow Core chooses only those who protect... never those who conquer."
The vision shattered.
Kairo woke with another gasp.
His bedroom window exploded outward.
Glass scattered across the floor.
A wave of invisible force burst from his body, rattling every object in the room.
His grandmother rushed to the doorway.
"Kairo!"
"I'm okay!"
He wasn't.
Not even close.
Hours later, after convincing his grandmother that the broken window had been caused by old, weak glass, Kairo left for school.
He hoped a normal day would calm his mind.
Instead, everything grew worse.
As he entered the classroom, he instantly sensed everyone's emotions.
Excitement.
Stress.
Fear.
Jealousy.
The feelings crashed into him all at once.
His head pounded.
"You alright?" his best friend, Malik, asked.
"You look like you haven't slept in days."
"I haven't."
"You need help?"
Kairo forced another smile.
"I'll be fine."
Before Malik could answer, every light inside the classroom flickered.
Computers shut down.
Phones lost power.
Even the wall clock stopped ticking.
Students murmured in confusion.
The lights came back seconds later.
No one noticed the faint blue sparks dancing across Kairo's fingertips.
He quietly shoved his hands into his pockets.
After school, he avoided everyone and walked toward the old bridge overlooking the river.
He needed answers.
He stared into the flowing water.
"Show yourself," he muttered.
Nothing happened.
He laughed bitterly.
"I'm talking to a crystal now."
Then the air grew cold.
The river became perfectly still.
A voice spoke—not from around him, but from inside his mind.
Host confirmed.
Kairo froze.
"Who's there?"
I am the Shadow Core.
His heartbeat quickened.
"This... this isn't real."
Reality has changed.
"Get out of my head."
Impossible. We are now one.
Kairo clenched his fists.
"What do you want from me?"
To survive.
Before he could respond, a violent explosion echoed from the opposite end of the bridge.
A city bus had crashed through the guardrail.
Half of it dangled over the rushing river below.
Passengers screamed.
Steel groaned.
The bridge cracked beneath the weight.
People rushed toward the scene but stopped in terror.
The bus was slipping.
Kairo stared in horror.
"I'm just a kid."
You are the Guardian.
"I don't know how!"
You will learn.
The front wheels slid farther over the edge.
A little girl inside the bus pressed her hand against the window, crying for help.
Kairo's fear vanished.
He ran.
Ignoring the shouting crowd, he reached the edge of the bridge just as the bus tipped forward.
Without thinking, he stretched out both hands.
Blue-black energy exploded from his body.
The falling bus froze in midair.
Gasps erupted from everyone watching.
The vehicle hovered above the river, surrounded by crackling streams of shadow and light.
Kairo felt every muscle strain as the enormous weight pressed against his mind.
He gritted his teeth.
"I... can't..."
You can.
With one final surge of energy, he lifted the bus back onto the bridge.
The tires slammed onto solid ground.
Passengers stumbled out, crying and embracing one another.
The crowd looked around, searching for whoever had saved them.
But Kairo was already gone.
Hidden in a nearby alley, he leaned against a wall, exhausted.
His hands trembled uncontrollably.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Sirens filled the streets.
Within minutes, videos of the mysterious rescue spread across the internet.
People gave the unknown savior a name before sunset.
Shadow Born.
Far away, inside an underground fortress hidden beneath the mountains, dozens of glowing monitors displayed footage from the bridge.
A tall man wearing black armor watched silently.
"The Shadow Core has awakened," he said.
Around him, soldiers prepared advanced weapons.
The man's lips curled into a cold smile.
"Begin the hunt."
Deep in space, beyond the edge of the solar system, a massive warship altered its course.
Its destination was Earth.
And its arrival would change humanity forever.
