Chapter Three: The Hunt Begins

1020 Words
The first video appeared online less than five minutes after the bridge rescue. A shaky phone recording showed a city bus hanging over the river before stopping in midair. Blue-black energy flashed around it, and then, impossibly, the bus rose back onto the bridge. No one could clearly see the person responsible. Within an hour, every news channel in Ebon City was broadcasting the footage. Some called it a miracle. Others claimed it was an elaborate hoax. Scientists demanded an investigation. Religious leaders called it a sign. Social media exploded with theories. One name rose above the noise. Shadow Born. Kairo stared at the television in a small electronics shop window as crowds gathered around the broadcast. "...authorities are searching for the unidentified individual seen leaving the bridge moments after the rescue," the news anchor reported. "Police have urged anyone with information to come forward." Kairo pulled his hood lower and hurried away. His phone buzzed. It was Malik. Bro! Did you see the news? Someone actually has superpowers! Kairo typed a reply. Crazy. Maybe it's fake. The response came almost instantly. No way. We're talking about this after school tomorrow. Kairo slipped the phone into his pocket. He wasn't sure there would even be a normal tomorrow. Across the city, beneath an abandoned subway station, a hidden elevator descended hundreds of meters into the earth. The doors opened into a massive underground command center. Rows of glowing holographic screens covered the walls. Armed soldiers moved with military precision. At the center of the room stood the man in black armor. His name was Commander Darius Voss. He studied the bridge footage again. "Enhance frame forty-eight." An analyst obeyed. The blurry image sharpened just enough to reveal faint streams of blue-black energy surrounding the mysterious figure. Voss smiled. "The Shadow Core." A woman beside him looked uneasy. "Sir... are we certain?" "We've searched for it for thirty years." He folded his hands behind his back. "And now it has chosen a host." She hesitated. "What are your orders?" Voss turned toward the room. "I want every camera in Ebon City connected to our system." "Drones?" "Deploy them." "Facial recognition?" "Run everyone." "What if the Guardian resists?" Voss's expression hardened. "Bring me the Core." "Alive?" "If possible." "And if not..." His silence answered the question. Kairo couldn't sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, strange memories invaded his mind. He saw worlds consumed by darkness. Cities floating through space. Armies wearing armor made of living crystal. None of them were his memories. Yet they felt real. He sat upright. "Shadow Core?" The familiar voice echoed in his thoughts. I am present. "Whose memories are these?" Previous Guardians. "There were others?" Thousands. Kairo swallowed. "What happened to them?" The answer came after a long silence. Most died protecting life. A chill ran through him. "I don't want to die." Neither did they. The next morning, Ebon City felt different. Police vehicles lined major roads. Military helicopters circled overhead. Digital billboards displayed the image of the bridge rescue. People pointed toward the sky whenever they heard aircraft. Everyone wanted to witness another miracle. Kairo wanted to disappear. During lunch break, Malik sat beside him. "You've barely spoken all day." "I'm tired." "Tired doesn't explain why you've been staring at the ceiling during math." Kairo laughed nervously. "I've got a lot on my mind." Malik leaned closer. "You know..." "What?" "If I had superpowers..." Kairo froze. "...I'd never hide." "You wouldn't?" "No chance." Malik grinned. "I'd stop every criminal in this city." Kairo forced a smile. "Sounds dangerous." "So does doing nothing." Those words stayed with Kairo long after lunch ended. That evening, a scream echoed through a crowded shopping district. A speeding armored truck had lost control. Its brakes had failed. The vehicle crashed through traffic, sending cars spinning across the road. Pedestrians scattered in panic. A mother stumbled while trying to protect her young son. The truck raced directly toward them. Without thinking, Kairo ran. Blue energy burst from beneath his feet. For the first time, he wasn't simply fast. He became a blur. Time seemed to stretch. He reached the mother and child in an instant, pulling them clear just before the truck slammed into a concrete barrier. The explosion shook nearby buildings. People stared. Some swore they had seen a streak of blue lightning. Others insisted the family had somehow teleported. Kairo disappeared into the crowd before anyone could identify him. He ducked into a narrow alley, breathing hard. "I almost got seen." Compassion outweighs caution, the Shadow Core said. "I could've exposed myself." You saved lives. For the first time, Kairo didn't argue. High above the city, a small surveillance drone hovered silently. Its camera tracked the faint energy trail left behind in the alley. Miles away, Commander Voss watched the live feed. "There." He zoomed in on the empty alley. Residual energy still crackled across the walls. "He was here." An officer approached. "Should we move?" Voss nodded. "Deploy the Hunters." Hidden within steel containers, four armored figures awakened. Their helmets sealed automatically. Red lights illuminated their visors. Each soldier carried advanced weapons capable of firing electromagnetic restraints. They weren't ordinary soldiers. They existed for one purpose. Capture beings with extraordinary abilities. Their transport aircraft lifted into the night. Kairo stood on the rooftop of his apartment building, staring across Ebon City's glowing skyline. The wind whipped through his hair. "So many people." Seven million within city limits, the Shadow Core replied. "And I can't save them all." No Guardian ever could. He looked down at his hands. Blue light flickered between his fingers. "What if I lose control?" Power does not define a Guardian. Choice does. For the first time since the crystal found him, Kairo felt something stronger than fear. Responsibility. He wasn't ready. But the city didn't have the luxury of waiting for him to become ready. Far below, hidden in the darkness between buildings, four armored Hunters stepped out of an unmarked vehicle. Their scanners locked onto a growing energy signal. One of them looked toward Kairo's rooftop. "Target located." The hunt had begun.
