Chapter Thirteen: Three Guardians

857 Words
Silence spread across Earth's orbit. For one impossible moment, no one moved. The Dominion fleet drifted among the stars, its commanders staring in disbelief. Human satellites transmitted images that no scientist could explain. Billions of people watched as three figures floated before the Devourer. Kairo. Serak. And Caelan—the First Guardian, once known as Revenant. The Devourer's six crimson eyes narrowed. "So..." "The light survives." Its voice rolled through space like distant thunder. Caelan stepped forward, his silver blade shining brighter than the stars around him. "It survives because hope survives." The Devourer laughed, a sound so deep it shook nearby warships. "You still speak like a Guardian." "I am a Guardian." "I always was." The creature's expression darkened. "Then die as one." Without warning, the Devourer lunged. One enormous claw swept across space. Caelan met it head-on. His silver blade carved through the darkness, releasing a wave of brilliant light. The clash created a shockwave powerful enough to push every nearby Dominion cruiser backward. Kairo stared in amazement. "He's... stronger than before." Orion appeared beside him. "He was always this strong." "The Void only buried his true power." Caelan pushed against the monster's claw. Golden symbols spread across his armor. The silver blade blazed brighter. With a mighty cry, he forced the Devourer backward. For the first time since its awakening... The creature lost ground. The Devourer roared. Dark tendrils burst from its body like living serpents. Hundreds of them shot toward the Guardians. "Kairo!" Serak shouted. The young Guardian reacted instantly. Blue-black energy expanded from his hands, forming a massive shield around himself and Serak. The tendrils slammed into the barrier. Cracks spread across its glowing surface. "They're too strong!" The Shadow Core answered. Share your strength. "What?" Trust your allies. Caelan understood first. He placed one hand on Kairo's shoulder. Silver energy flowed into the shield. Serak added the white energy of his spear. The barrier transformed. Blue. Silver. White. The three energies merged into a radiant wall of light. The tendrils shattered against it. The Devourer growled. "Impossible." Far below, in the streets of Ebon City, people looked skyward. The darkness covering the heavens slowly retreated as the combined light of the Guardians spread across the clouds. Children pointed upward. "They're winning!" Firefighters, doctors, police officers, and ordinary citizens stopped for just a moment to watch. Hope returned. Inside his underground command center, Commander Voss watched the battle unfold. His face remained cold. "So..." "Caelan has returned." His chief scientist looked nervous. "Commander... perhaps we should evacuate." Voss slowly shook his head. "No." "If the Guardians win..." "We lose everything." He opened a secure vault. Inside rested a small black crystal no larger than a human hand. Unlike the Void Core... This crystal emitted no light. It absorbed it. The scientist stepped backward. "Sir..." "That's forbidden." Voss picked it up. "Sometimes history demands sacrifice." Back in orbit, the battle intensified. The Devourer opened its massive jaws. A sphere of pure darkness formed inside its mouth. Orion's eyes widened. "No!" "Kairo!" "Move!" The creature fired. A beam of black energy tore through space, swallowing everything in its path. Dominion warships vanished without exploding. They simply... ceased to exist. Kairo felt time slow. The beam was too large. Too fast. There was nowhere to escape. Caelan flew directly into its path. "No!" Kairo shouted. The First Guardian raised his blade with both hands. Light erupted from his armor. The beam struck. For several terrifying seconds, Caelan disappeared inside the darkness. Then... The beam split in two. The attack curved harmlessly around Earth. The skies exploded with silver light. Caelan emerged, breathing heavily. His armor was cracked. Blood drifted into space. But he was alive. The Devourer looked genuinely surprised. "You have grown stronger." Caelan lowered his blade. "No." "I remembered who I am." The Shadow Core pulsed inside Kairo. The Devourer's armor is weakening. "I see it." Dark cracks had begun spreading across the monster's chest. Every attack from Caelan widened them. Serak noticed them too. "The heart." "The cracks lead to its heart." Orion nodded. "It has one chance." "One opening." "But reaching it..." "...will cost everything." Kairo looked at Caelan. The First Guardian already understood. He smiled sadly. "It always does." Kairo's heart sank. "No." "We'll find another way." Caelan rested a hand on his shoulder. "When I became a Guardian..." "I swore to protect life before my own." "I broke that oath once." "I won't break it again." Before Kairo could answer, the Devourer attacked again. This time the Guardians charged together. Blue. Silver. White. Three streaks of light raced across the stars toward the ancient destroyer. Behind them... Earth watched. Its fate would be decided in the next battle. Far beneath the city, Commander Voss activated the black crystal. Its surface cracked open. A whisper echoed through the underground chamber. "At last... someone has called my name." Voss smiled. "I need power." The voice laughed. "Then open the final gate." As the Guardians fought for the future of Earth, an even older darkness began to awaken below its surface. The greatest battle was still to come. End of Chapter Thirteen.
