Chapter Five: The Fallen Guardian

907 Words
Morning arrived with chaos. Every television in Ebon City showed the same footage. A dark figure soaring above rooftops. Explosions lighting up the skyline. Witnesses describing a battle between a mysterious hero and armored soldiers. News reporters called it the most extraordinary event in the city's history. Some hailed Shadow Born as a savior. Others warned he could be a dangerous weapon. The government denied knowing anything about the incident. But the fear in their voices told another story. Kairo sat silently at the kitchen table, stirring untouched food. His grandmother watched him with concern. "You've hardly eaten." "I'm not hungry." "You've been distracted for days." She reached across the table and held his hand. "Kairo... whatever you're carrying, you don't have to carry it alone." For a moment, he wanted to tell her everything. About the crystal. The powers. The Hunters. The voice inside his mind. Instead, he simply smiled. "I'll be okay." She wasn't convinced. School was impossible. Students crowded the hallways, replaying videos of the rooftop battle. Everyone had an opinion. "I heard he destroyed a helicopter." "My cousin says the army is hunting him." "They say he's not even human." Malik rushed toward Kairo with excitement. "Did you see him fly?" Kairo nodded carefully. "I saw the videos." "He looked incredible." Malik lowered his voice. "I don't think he's evil." "What makes you say that?" "He could've hurt people." "But he didn't." Kairo looked away. "I guess you're right." That evening, Kairo returned to the abandoned scrapyard where everything had begun. The crater was still there. Government investigators had surrounded the area with barricades, but they had already left for the day. He climbed over the fence. The moment he stepped into the crater, the Shadow Core became unusually quiet. "What's wrong?" A faint pulse echoed beneath his feet. Something remains. "What?" Before the Core could answer, the ground trembled. Ancient symbols ignited beneath the dirt. Blue light spread outward in perfect circles. The earth cracked open. A metallic structure slowly rose from below. It looked older than civilization itself. Smooth black metal. No rust. No damage. No visible doors. The structure hummed softly. Then a single doorway appeared. Kairo hesitated. "This was buried here?" Hidden. Waiting. "For me?" For the Guardian. Taking a deep breath, Kairo stepped inside. The doorway sealed behind him. Lights flickered to life one by one. The room stretched farther than seemed physically possible. Strange machines lined the walls. Floating screens displayed symbols from languages he had never seen. At the center stood a pedestal. Resting on it was a silver bracelet. The moment Kairo approached, the bracelet floated into the air and locked itself around his wrist. He tried to remove it. It wouldn't budge. A calm voice echoed throughout the chamber. "Guardian recognized." "Access granted." Holograms filled the room. Stars. Galaxies. Entire civilizations. Then a figure appeared. An elderly man wearing armor similar to Kairo's growing shadow suit. His form shimmered like a recording. "If you are seeing this," the man said, "then I am long dead." Kairo stared in disbelief. "My name is Aster." "I was the final Guardian before you." "You now carry the Shadow Core." The hologram walked slowly around the room. "The Core was created by an ancient alliance to preserve balance throughout the universe." "It chooses only those willing to protect others at any cost." Images appeared around him. Guardians from different worlds. Some human. Some not. Each wielded incredible power. "Many have carried the Core." "Few survived." Kairo swallowed. "Great." Aster's expression grew serious. "There is one enemy you must never underestimate." The hologram shifted. A massive warrior appeared. Towering. Wrapped in black armor. His eyes burned red. "He was once a Guardian." "He became the strongest of us." "Then he betrayed everything we stood for." Kairo's heartbeat quickened. "The Fallen Guardian." "He sought unlimited power." "He believed peace could only exist if every world was ruled by force." "The Core rejected him." "So he created his own." A dark crystal appeared in the warrior's chest. "The Void Core." "It feeds on fear, hatred, and destruction." Kairo watched silently. "He disappeared centuries ago." "We believed him destroyed." Aster looked directly toward Kairo. "If he ever returns..." "Run." The recording suddenly distorted. Warning alarms echoed through the chamber. The Shadow Core spoke urgently. Unauthorized life-form approaching. "What?" A loud explosion shook the hidden base. The entrance door bent inward. Another explosion followed. Metal screamed. Commander Voss stepped through the smoke. Behind him stood dozens of soldiers. And beside him... The giant from the underground chamber. Nearly eight feet tall. Black armor. Crimson eyes. The same warrior from Aster's warning. Kairo's blood ran cold. "It can't be..." Commander Voss smiled. "Meet Project Revenant." The giant stepped forward slowly. Its heavy footsteps shook the chamber. Then it spoke. Its voice was deep. Cold. Ancient. "You..." It stared directly into Kairo's glowing eyes. "...carry the Shadow Core." Kairo couldn't move. The giant tilted its head. "I remember that light." The Shadow Core suddenly pulsed violently. Warning. Genetic signature confirmed. Former Guardian detected. Kairo whispered, "The Fallen Guardian..." The giant's crimson eyes narrowed. "No." "I am what remains of him." Commander Voss raised a hand. "Take the Core." Revenant drew a massive black blade from his back. Dark energy spread across the chamber. For the first time since receiving his powers... Kairo felt genuine terror. And deep inside the Shadow Core... A forgotten memory awakened.
