Theresa’s POV
The nerve of that mongrel to dare talk to me as if I am below him. He can keep his wife and her child there in his pack for the rest of their lives. At least the child has no powers and cannot destroy my plans. I thought for sure that she was going to be quite the powerful creature, being half high witch and half alpha wolf. I stay deep in my thoughts as I walk through the town toward home.
It has been a long day of pretending to be sweet to that brat. Of course, if she had been coming into her own powers, I would have had to play the part of the doting grandmummy and try to convince her to come and live here so that way we could monitor her powers. Thank the Priestess that this was not the case. Yet, something is still nagging at me. I feel like there was something I missed. It’s on the tip of my tongue, but I cannot make it come forward. It’s probably the stress of being around my good for nothing daughter.
She was supposed to marry one of the most powerful warlocks in the country, but she decided that she had to be the “fated mate” to that wolf. Granted, Crystal Star is a strong pack of wolves, but she would have had so much more if she had married Trenton. I would have had so much more as well. I would be treated as royalty, being the mother of the Queen Witch. I guess it is possible for me to have some recognition as the mother of the Princess Witch, if I can get Sapphire closer to the King Warlock’s son.
I arrive at the gates which I wave open. I stormed up the stairs and into my family’s home. It has been here for many centuries and some of the most powerful witches and warlocks have graced these halls. Some have even called it home. I walked directly into Alfred’s study to update him on our lack of a daughter and granddaughter.
“My dear, you are back much sooner than I expected. Please tell me about our daughter and granddaughter!”
“We no longer have them to worry about” I dismissively say with the wave of my hand. Alfred tenses slightly. He was always so partial to the girl. He has wanted to visit them for years. He secretly went to the wedding of the wretched girl and her hound. He has always been very sentimental towards her. Maybe that was part of what made me fall in love with him years ago, but now it's just daunting to deal with.
“Theresa, please explain what you mean. Is our daughter and granddaughter okay?” Concern starts to invade every aspect of his face.
“They are alive, if that is what you mean. They also look to stay that way for quite a while, so don’t start with your worries for them.” Alfred visibly relaxes and crosses the room and kisses my cheek.
“I do not know how you can care so little about a child that you bore and the daughter that she bore. They are made by you and yet you hate them both.” I freeze at this comment. The fact is that I don’t hate them. I loved Rayne very dearly when she was a baby and growing up. I could love Amethyst too, but Rayne has complicated everything.
“Alfred, you know that I don’t hate them. I just hate the mess that Rayne has made. Marrying that filthy beast and producing a child from that union. She could have married King Warlock Trenton, but no. She insisted on living with the animals!”
“My dear, you know that they were fated mates. That is a gift from the Priestess herself! Witches and warlocks very rarely find their fated mates.” I start to feel the heat of my anger rise up my neck at the mention of fated mates.
“You mean a curse, Alfred! Witches and warlocks are meant to be with others of the same kind, not to be with other types of creatures!” I am practically yelling at him. I know that it has been more “popular” to be with any creature nowadays, but bloodlines for those of us that have royalty and power were meant to stay pure. I gave up my fated mate years and years ago out of respect for duty.
“If you need any proof that it’s a curse, then you need look no further than that grandchild of yours. She was unable to even do the most basic of transferences. She actually cried during it. Rayne has not taught that child anything about her roots. I tell you the child is cursed. I imagine that she will not even have a wolf to her, let alone any magic.”
“I take it she failed the ring test then?” I could tell that Alfred was slightly disappointed that his own granddaughter had not come into her witch. Ten years old is a bit late to even be hoping that she might get her magic, but I hadn’t seen much of a point until there had been a prophecy from a witch over in Scotland of a powerful Alpha Wolf with magic stronger than the strongest of witches and warlocks. They are to be the one to supposedly unite the wolves and witches to one kingdom. Many witches and warlocks claim to have prophecies and very few actually turn out to be true, but there is still a chance of truth. I surely would not want to be on the bad side of this supposed Alpha Witch.
I snap back to attention when I hear Alfred speak again. “Where is the ring?”
“I’m sure it’s with my things. You saw me just walk through the door. I haven’t had time to unpack anything. Why do you even care about the ring?”
“You know that it belongs to Amethyst by her birth right. I wondered if you had given it to her.”
“That child will receive nothing from me, you can count on that.” I spun around and walked away. How absolutely preposterous for him to think that I would give that child a ring after she has been disowned. I will need to make sure to grab it from my things and hide it so that Alfred doesn’t get it in his silly head to try and give it to her.
I grab my bag and walk up the winding staircase to my study. I need to do some more research on this prophecy and find any information I can about a wolf and witch mix to see if there is any type of delay in onset of powers. I cannot seem to get the thought that I'm missing something out of my head.
