Chapter 4

Flashback continues... Bane’s POV I immediately pick up on the scent of fresh strawberries and mint. The scent is so strong that I can feel my mouth start to water. I do love fresh strawberries, but this smell is so intoxicating. Then I see her. I can tell she’s not a wolf, but I’m not sure what she is. Considering that this is the Moon Goddess Gathering, it’s not completely unsurprising that other life forms are here. I take another deep smell in and the word hits me and immediately I mumble out the word “Mate!” Thankfully nobody else is around me to hear this confession. I don’t even know who she is yet. That’s when she turns toward me and our eyes make contact. I can feel the drool pooling in my mouth and I cannot help the idea of wanting to mate and mark her coming to the forefront of my mind. Then she takes her pretty brown eyes and rolls them at me! She immediately breaks eye contact and looks at her friend. I cannot believe she rolled her eyes at me! I mean does she not feel the mate pull? Does she not smell me? Well, maybe not. She isn’t a wolf. What is she then? I walked forward into the crowd to seek out my best friend, Paul. He’s the future Alpha of the pack and maybe he will know what to do or at least know who to talk to. I see a large group of girls up ahead and I just know that’s where Paul is. He is 19 and still has not found his mate yet and every she-wolf is ready to try and be his chosen mate. However, Paul has no plans for a chosen mate. He wants to find his fated mate, but has no qualms on playing the field until she comes along. “Bane! There you are, buddy!” Paul yells at me through the group of girls, who immediately make way for me to come stand next to him. As the next Beta, the girls are also interested in trying to get their claws into me, more literally than figuratively, since up until this point I had not found my mate. “Paul, there’s something important I need to talk to you about. It’s pretty urgent and personal.” Paul looked around and saw the opening to the rose garden. He nods to it and I start to make my way to the gate and find it to be locked. Paul hands me the key as he tries to slip through the gate without letting the girls in. “I’ll be back soon ladies.” He laughed and we walked to the center of the garden where we could have the most privacy. “This better be important, Bane. I had a very important conference going on with those very professional ladies out there.” He laughs at his own joke and I roll my eyes at it. “I think I found my mate, I blurt out.” Paul stops laughing and looks at me. “That’s great, Bane. It didn’t need to be a top-secret meeting. Who is the lovely she-wolf?” “It’s not a wolf. Paul, she’s something else,” I confided. “Oh wow!!! That’s amazing. Do you think she’s here for the Mood Goddess Gathering?” I just looked at him and rolled my eyes. He might be the next Alpha, but sometimes he only has enough blood to operate one head at a time and I can tell he is still thinking about the mob of she-wolves outside the gate. “Of course she’s here. How do you think I saw her?” I tried to force him into the seriousness of the moment. “Oh….that would make sense” he admits. “Is she nice? What’s her name? What is she, if she’s not a she-wolf?” “Well, I didn’t actually get to talk to her” I quietly told him. I brought him up to speed on the entire encounter that took place between her and I. Of course, he started laughing at the fact that she rolled her eyes at me. “It sounds like the two of you will make a perfect pair.” Paul continued to laugh until there were tears running down his face. “Come on, I need you to focus and help me figure out what she is and how to navigate all of this!” I pleaded with him and he patted me on my back and we walked into the side door to the pack house. “I know exactly who we need to talk to. Nan knows about all sorts of things." Paul led me up the elevator and hit for the sixth floor. The pack house, being quite big, had a number of floors. As the future Beta, I had been to almost all of them. Floor six is where the direct family of the Alpha lives. Paul's grandma, the current Alpha's mother, lives on that floor along with Paul and his siblings. They all affectionately call Paul's grandma, Nan. We got off of the elevator once we arrived at the selected floor. There, in the common room, sat Nan. "Hi Nan!" Paul went to his grandma and gave her a peck on the cheek. "Paul! Bane! What a surprise. Why aren't you boys at the gathering?" Nan came over and gave me a hug. Paul and I sat down on the couch. "Bane has a predicament, Nan. We were wondering if you might know how to handle it." Nan shifted her gaze over to me. "Well, I might be a good bit older than you boys, but I like to think most of my senses are intact. Now, let me think. Is it about a she-wolf?" She grabbed my hand and closed her eyes. Nan has always been a wolf, but had traveled abroad when she was younger and became great friends with a witch. For her wedding gift, that friend of hers gave her the gift of third sight to help her lead the pack with her husband. Nan's marriage took place during a very tumultuous time where the risk of war between packs was great. This gift helped keep the pack safe during that time. "It's not a she-wolf, she is a witch. Your fated mate is a witch." Nan held my hand for a while longer and let go. "She's here at the gathering, but you already know that. Yet, you are here and not with her. Why is that?" "She's a witch? Is that really true? Can I even be mates with a witch?" I started to babble off all sorts of questions. Nan just laughed at me. "Of course you can. The Moon Goddess picked you for her. Hence why she is here during the festival during the full moon. The Moon Goddess pretty much spelled it out for you, yet you do not want to believe what you saw with your own eyes. Go find her, Bane." Nan stood up to dismiss us. We both stood up as well, but I had more questions. "Nan, what do I even say to her? Will she believe me about fated mates? Will she have the mate pull?" I rambled on again. "Oh, child. You do not need to explain anything to her. Just go and say hello and introduce yourself. I know that a lot has changed since I was a young girl being courted by the previous Alpha, but things haven't changed that much. Do not over think it, just go to her." Flashback Ends Ame's POV "So, I went and found your mother and I said hello." My dad grabbed my mom's hand and looked lovingly at her. "What about Trent and grandma? What happened?" The story was long, but I wanted more. It seemed like a fairytale to me. "I broke things off with Trent. He understood and your grandma didn't. She told me that if I continued to choose your father over Trent that I was no longer welcome back. I moved into the pack house and not long after that we had our mating ceremony." Mom smiled a full smile.
