CHAPTER ONE
Congratulations Mrs. Rosa, you are two weeks pregnant,” Dr. Caleb announced with a grin.
My eyes widened. I grabbed the paper from him, ruffling it open. The results confirmed it — I was indeed pregnant.
My eyes stung with tears as I looked at the doctor, grateful.
“Thank you so much… I can't believe this.” I couldn't stop myself from crying.
Everyone in the city knew me as infertile. For seven years I've been married to Liam, yet I couldn't conceive. We've gone to different doctors all over the world, but no one could find out what was wrong with me.
Liam would be so happy.
Despite his family’s pressure to get a new wife, he didn't accept and chose me. I'm so glad I could finally give him this.
I resisted the urge to call him as I left the building.
He was out of town and would be back tomorrow.
It should be a surprise. I couldn't just tell him over the phone.
I took a drive back to the estate. Liam and I lived with his extended family. They have always been a thorn to my flesh even before I married Liam.
My heart bubbled with pride. I couldn't wait to break it to them that I wasn't infertile after all.
But the moment I drove into the gates of the parking lot, I saw my clothes and bags thrown in front of the porch. The maids kept throwing my things out.
I quickly got off my car and marched inside the house.
My heart skipped a beat. My stepsister Eunice was ordering the maids around while Liam and his mother sat on the couch discussing as if it was a normal thing.
“Eunice, what are you doing in my home?” I practically shouted.
She just looked at me with irritation. “Your home? You mean my new home?”
“You must be insane!” I turned to Liam, who was looking at me with a blank expression. “Baby, what's going on? How can you let this happen?”
“I forgot to call you and tell you earlier,” he said bluntly, standing now. “I want a divorce.”
“What.”
The world tilted violently. I walked to him but he took a step back.
“You are joking right? This is April Fools, isn't it?”
“You are either stupid or hysterical, or maybe just both!” His mother boomed, jerking up from the chair. “My son wants a divorce. What don't you get? He no longer loves you and is marrying your stepsister who is pregnant for him — something you could never be.”
I gasped, my eyes wide. Pregnant. No… it can't be.
I looked up at Liam, who couldn't meet my eyes.
“Baby, she's lying right?”
Eunice walked up to his side and intertwined her fingers with his. He didn't pull away. Instead, he looked me coldly in the eyes.
“I've spent seven years waiting for an heir from you but nothing. You have only stayed in my house, added extra pounds, and wasted my money on your stupid friends.” He wrapped an arm around Eunice's waist. “Eunice and I ran into each other in Paris. What happened was a mistake and she ended up with my child. I wouldn't abandon the woman carrying my baby, and I can't afford having two wives. The papers will be mailed to you and I'll send some cash to your bank. You can choose to get a job or waste it.”
I blinked, trying desperately to unhear everything.
My own husband had an affair with my sister. All this while I believed Liam loved me — it was just a lie.
And now when I finally had his baby… I wouldn't be a second option. My baby didn't deserve to be brought up in this family.
“I mean how could she give birth? All her fat must have blocked her ovaries,” Eunice snickered cruelly.
Liam's mother and the maids laughed too, mocking me.
I gripped my skirt tightly and turned for the door, my heart beating so loudly in my chest. By tomorrow the news would be everywhere in Seattle.
No one ever blames the men. Everyone would point fingers at me, saying I'm the problem, and if they found out I'm pregnant, they would say I had an affair. I couldn't risk it.
I had enough money saved to move to another city and start a new life. A city that had no idea who the Carter family was.
I looked back one more time. Liam's shoulders tensed. He pulled away from Eunice and stormed upstairs. Eunice chased after him.
I tried so hard not to cry. I grabbed some of my things and left, never to return again.

TWO YEARS LATER…
I was running late for my interview and the traffic did nothing to help. I'd planned on going earlier, but Mikey had sprained his foot and I had to take him to the doctor.
Things hadn't been easy since I moved here. I didn't accept any of Liam's money and had taken six low-paying jobs since I've been here.
Recently, I got an offer from the top firm in New York. I hadn't even applied — I just got the mail last night.
I took the elevator and played nervously with my fingers, trying to control my nervousness.
Maybe this was it — an opportunity sent from heaven so I could finally have my revenge on Liam and Eunice. She had given birth to triplets, their love story was everywhere. Just the smile on Liam's face shattered my heart into so many unbreakable pieces.
I shifted the thought away immediately. It's been two years already — he has no space in my thoughts.
“Welcome in, Miss Rosa,” an incredibly beautiful woman in a pantsuit and grey hair styled perfectly into a bun greeted.
She looked oddly familiar.
She stood, smiling brightly, and walked to me.
“Oh my, I can't believe I've finally seen you.”
I frowned in confusion. “Do I know you from before?”
She shook her head. “It's been years since I left, Rosa. I can't believe you don't recognize your mother.”
