Jacob sat on his bed in the dorm, watching the other boys mill around. It was the first time he had actually heard them talking to each other. The two boys Connor and Jacob had sparred were over in the corner, glowering and shooting angry glares in Jacob’s direction. Not that Jacob could blame them. They had avoided being sent to the infirmary, but both boys looked terrible, and Bonner had entered the dorm with a pronounced limp. The rest of the boys had been studiously ignoring Jacob and Connor all evening. From the hushed tones they were speaking in, and the surreptitious glancing in Connor and Jacob’s direction, Jacob felt sure he knew what they were talking about. Only Mikey seemed intent on speaking to them, inching closer to Jacob’s bunk and sneaking peeks at him every few seconds.
