27 A Perfect Paradise Jacob felt Emilia twist away from him as they sped through the dark. He wouldn’t let her be dragged away. He tightened his grip on her hand, and her arms wrapped around him. White light flashed in Jacob’s eyes before he saw the ground racing toward them. Twisting, he lifted Emilia to fall on top of him. He hit the ground with a grunt, shielding Emilia from the hard earth. “Thanks,” Emilia murmured, rolling off of Jacob and tumbling to the ground. Pain seized Jacob’s back as he turned over.
