28 Decided “Jacob.” Emilia’s muffled sob wrenched Jacob from sleep. “Emilia!” Jacob sat up, his gaze sweeping over the trees, expecting blood or danger. But Emilia was curled up next to him on the grass, sobbing and reaching for some unseen thing. Her eyes were shut tight as the nightmare kept her in its grip. “Emi,” Jacob whispered, pulling her into his arms. “Emi, you’re okay.” Emilia woke with a gasp, pushing herself away from Jacob and staring wildly around the cavern. “Emilia,” Jacob said gently, holding out a hand to her. “It’s all right. You were having a nightmare.” Emilia looked at him, her eyes focusing on his face in the dim light before she launched herself at him, sobbing again. “You’re safe,” Jacob whispered, rocking Emilia gently in his arms.
