"The defence has relied chiefly on the testimony of two witnesses, Margaret Withers and Richards Coldfoot, to prove that at the time when these crimes were committed the accused was at the house and in the presence of the former. You have seen Margaret Withers in the witness-box. She does not deny her intimate relations with the prisoner. She has informed you that she is in love with him, heart and soul. It is not for you to pass judgment on the fact that this love of hers for the prisoner has led her into an irregular union with him. You have simply to make up your minds whether you are going to believe her evidence or not. Do not forget that she admitted in cross-examination that she was preparing, with the aid of the prisoner, to come before the courts of this realm and sue for a divorc
