Chapter 8 ROBERT ELDRIDGE stood by the door of his cell in the Old Bailey which the warder had just closed behind him. It was not more than ten or twelve feet long, and half as wide, very clean, bare and hygienic. The walls were lined with reddish-brown tiles halfway up and white tiles to the ceiling. A small high window opposite the door allowed the due quantity of light and air to enter. There was no furniture save for a deal table and a wooden stool. Eldridge sat down. So this was No. 1 cell. He had heard the warders refer to it as they led him from the Black Maria by which he had arrived that autumn morning from Brixton.
