_That Morning. 7:42 AM. After she left._
The door clicked shut. Her toast was still on the plate. Half-eaten.
Four men stood in a kitchen that suddenly felt too quiet.
Adrian didn't move from the balcony doorway. His eyes were on her backpack spot by the door. Empty now. The faint smell of her shampoo still in the air.
Marcus opened his fist. The small zip bag inside had three dark strands, little white bulbs at the end.
"Root intact," Dante said, professional voice taking over to hide how much his own hand was shaking. He held his own bag up to the light. One long strand. "We have enough for PCR. Even with one, but three is better."
Julian sat down heavily in the chair Nora had just left. "Guys. What if we're wrong? What if she just... looks like Luna?"
No one answered.
Because they all knew. The mole behind her left ear. The tiny scar on her right knee from falling off Marcus's bike when she was 7. The way she tilted her head when she was confused — exactly like the photo of 10-year-old Luna in the garden.
Marcus had seen it when she took the brush back from him.
Adrian finally spoke. "We're not wrong."
He took both bags and put them in his inner pocket like they were something holy. "Dante. Your lab. Not Whitmore Memorial. Not Sinclair. Somewhere private."
"My friend runs a private genetics lab in Midtown. No names. Cash. Results in 24 hours if I push," Dante said. "I'll go now."
"And the baby tooth?" Julian asked.
Marcus swallowed. "My mom kept everything. Luna's teeth, first drawings, first shoes. It's in her jewelry box. Labeled. She looks at it when she thinks no one's watching. I'll get it tonight when she's at the charity gala. Dad will be with her. Serena's out of town. The house will be empty."
Adrian nodded. "Text me when you have it. Don't let anyone see you."
Marcus looked at the half-eaten toast. "She called you Mr. Sinclair."
"I know."
"She used to call me Marc-Marc. Couldn't say Marcus."
"I know."
Julian stood up, suddenly angry — not at anyone, at the whole thing. "8 years! 8 years she was in the Sufu house as a blood bag for Andy Sufu! Do you know what they did to her? She was 10! She was —" He stopped, because Adrian's face had gone completely white.
Adrian remembered. Finding her at 15.
Rain. Roadside near the old highway out of the city. A girl in a too-big uniform, collapsed. Pale like paper. He'd thought she was homeless at first. He called an ambulance. In the ER they said severe anemia, malnutrition, low blood sugar. She woke up and didn't know her birthday. Didn't know her last name properly. Said it was Sufu, but she said it like a question.
The Sufus had shown up 4 hours later. Not worried. Annoyed. "She runs away again. Always dramatic." The mother, cold, saying: "She's our eldest, but she's... weak. Not bright."
He had believed them. Because he was 20 and he didn't know how to not believe adults.
He should have asked why their 'eldest daughter' had no birth photos before age 11.

_9:15 AM. Whitmore University. Design Building._
Nora sat in the back row, sketchbook open but not drawing.
Dorm 3B — key ready. That text glowed in her mind.
She'd moved two sweaters, her extra sketch pencils, her little plant. Tonight she'd move the rest while Adrian was at his late board meeting. Quiet. No drama. The contract said 6 months, but she'd been here 7 already. She'd given enough. She didn't want to be the wife who had to be told to leave.
She was good at leaving quietly. The Sufus had taught her that.
Her phone buzzed.
*Marcus Whitmore:* Hey! It was nice seeing you this morning. Forgot to ask — do you like rosemary oil? I can have some sent. For hair.
She stared. Why was Marcus Whitmore texting her?
Another buzz.
*Julian Croft:* NORA!!! Bagels tomorrow? Same time? You make better coffee than Adrian's machine I swear
And another.
*Dante Blackwood:* This is Dante. From this morning. If you are experiencing increased hair shedding, it could be stress related. Let me know if you want labs done. No charge.
Nora's hand tightened around her phone. Three billionaires' sons, all suddenly worried about her hair.
Weird.
She typed back, polite, same stranger-smile in text form:
_Thank you! I'm fine, really. Just exam stress. Thank you for checking._
She put her phone face down. Drew a line. Then another. The line became a garden. The garden from a dream she kept having — big hedges, a bike with a pink basket, a boy yelling "Luna, wait!"
She never knew who Luna was in the dream.

_10:30 AM. Private Lab. Midtown._
Dante walked in with two zip bags in a paper envelope.
His friend, Dr. Lee, frowned. "You said paternity?"
"Not paternity. Sibship. And one unknown female, 18. Compare to a female child, 6, from a baby tooth. I need mitochondrial too. And I need it sealed. No upload. No hospital system."
Dr. Lee looked at the bags. "Dante, whose DNA is this?"
"A girl who got lost 8 years ago. And a girl who got found 3 years ago."
Dr. Lee understood. He didn't ask more. "24 hours. Maybe less. I'll call only you."
Dante sat in the waiting room after handing it over. For the first time since med school, he prayed.

_3:00 PM. Sinclair Group. CEO Office._
Adrian hadn't done any work.
His assistant had brought in three files. He hadn't opened them.
On his desk: two photos. He'd printed the one from this morning — Nora in the kitchen, taken from the security camera still, backpack by the door. And the 10-year-old Luna.
Same girl.
Julian burst in without knocking. "Guard roster."
He dropped a folder. Dusty. "My dad's security company did Whitmore Estate from 2014-2020. I called in a favor. The roster from the week Luna disappeared."
Adrian flipped it open.
Night shift. 8 PM - 6 AM.
Two names highlighted.
*R. Kline — Gate 2 — Sick leave — Called in 7:42 PM.*
*J. Harrow — Camera Room — Shift swap — Approved by Mrs. Anya Whitmore? No — signature is not hers.*
Adrian's finger stopped.
"Who's Harrow?" he asked.
"Fired two months later. Theft. Lives in Queens now. Drives a cab," Julian said. "And Kline? Dead. Car accident, 3 years ago."
"That's not coincidence," Adrian said quietly.
Julian leaned forward. "And check this. Sufu family. They adopted a daughter — officially — when? 8 years ago. Same month Luna went missing. Adoption papers filed in Delaware. Private. Sealed. But my guy found the filing number. Child: female, 10, name: Nora Sufu, formerly unregistered. Reason: 'Found abandoned, taken in by charitable family.'"
Adrian's hands clenched until his knuckles were white.
"They took her from the estate gate. Drove her out. And then filed her as abandoned. So no one would look for a ransom."
"Adrian," Julian said, voice low. "If they wanted her gone, not money — who paid them? Who wanted the Whitmore heiress gone?"
The office door opened. Marcus stood there, hoodie gone, back in his suit, face pale.
"I have it," he said. Holding a tiny velvet box.
Inside — a tiny baby tooth. Yellowed. With a little note in a woman's handwriting: _Luna — 6 years — first bottom tooth — my brave girl._
Marcus's eyes were red. "Mom cried last week when she looked at it. She thinks I didn't see."
He placed it next to the two photos.
Three pieces of a girl. 6, 10, and 18.
"We'll know tomorrow," Marcus whispered.
Adrian looked at the tooth, then at the security photo of Nora this morning, backpack heavy, trying to leave him quietly because she thought she was a burden.
His voice broke for the first time that day.
"She spent 8 years thinking she was nobody's child. She learned to make toast exactly how I like it because she thought if she wasn't perfect, she'd be sent back to being a blood bag. She learned to smile like a stranger so she wouldn't get hit."
He stood up.
"When that DNA comes back — when it's positive — I'm going to bring her home. And then I'm going to burn the Sufu house to the ground. Legally."
Marcus put a hand on his shoulder. Brother to brother, not billionaire to billionaire.
"First, we tell her she's not leaving," Marcus said. "Ever. Not to a dorm. Not to anywhere."
Adrian looked at the clock. 3:15. She'd be out of class at 4.
"She thinks tonight is her last night here," he said. "She moved her plant."
Julian smiled, sad and determined. "Then let's make sure when she comes back, her closet is full again. And her name is on the door."
Dante texted the group chat at 3:17 PM:
*Dante: Samples accepted. 24h. No one else knows.*
*Marcus: Got the tooth. Safe.*
*Julian: Guard lead. Harrow in Queens. We go tomorrow after results.*
*Adrian: She gets home at 5. Act normal. No one scares her.*
*Adrian: And someone buy rosemary oil. She thinks we care about her hair loss.*
Julian replied: *On it. sss Prime.*
In Dorm 3B, a single small plant sat on an empty desk, waiting for a girl who thought she was leaving home, not knowing she was about to find the one she'd lost at 10 years old.
