Luna

Julian frowned at the two photos on the table — Luna Whitmore at 10, gap-tooth smile in the garden, and Nora at 18 in the white dress from Obscura. "Okay, let's stick to only what we _actually_ know," Julian said, trying to be the logical one for once. "Fact one: Luna Whitmore, Marcus's real sister, got lost at 10 from an estate surrounded by guards. Fact two: Adrian found a girl at 15 fainted by the roadside from low blood sugar — that girl is now Nora. Fact three: Nora is now 18, your contract wife who you married to destroy the Sufus." He looked up. "So — one, if she got lost at 10... how did she end up in the Sufu family as a blood bank for Andy? We don't know. Adrian, you don't know. Marcus, you don't know. No one does. That's a blank." Adrian nodded, jaw tight. "I don't know. When I found her at 15, Sufus just said she was their eldest daughter. That's it. I never got the full story." "Two," Julian continued, "if someone inside helped her disappear from a guarded estate — because come on, guards everywhere, cameras — then who? Who opened the gate? Who was on duty? We have no logs. We never investigated that." Marcus stared at the table. "Dad fired everyone after. Said they were useless. We never looked deeper. We just... accepted she was lost." "And three," Julian said, and his voice dropped. "Why would they kidnap her and not ask for ransom? You're the Whitmores. You're billionaires. Kidnappers want money. But there was never a call. Never a note. Not once in 8 years. So..." He didn't finish. Dante finished it quietly, doctor voice cold. "So they didn't want money. They wanted her gone." Silence. Heavy. Four friends looking at each other, realizing they have no answers — only a missing 10-year-old and an 18-year-old girl who looks exactly like her and thinks she's a nobody. "We need to investigate," Marcus whispered, holding his sister's 10-year-old photo. "From scratch. Guard roster from 8 years ago. How she entered the Sufu family. Why no ransom." Adrian looked at the photos. "And DNA," he said. "Tomorrow morning. Secretly. No one knows — not your mom, she's been through much, not your dad, not Serena, not Luna — not Nora herself. If we're wrong, we break her again." Marcus nodded. "Tomorrow breakfast. Unannounced. I get a hair. You distract her." Adrian's eyes stayed on Luna at 10, smiling in his garden 8 years ago. "And we don't go to her dorm yet," he said softly. "Let her think she's still planning to leave me quietly. Her real name is Luna, but she doesn't know it yet." Julian whispered: "So right now we have nothing but questions?" "Right now," Dante said, "we have two photos of the same girl, 8 years apart. And that's enough to start." *Next Morning. Sinclair Penthouse. 7:30 AM.* Nora was already up. Of course she was. Toast — exactly how Adrian liked it. Eggs — no pepper. Coffee — black, no sugar. Sketchbook closed. Sweater neat. Her backpack by the door — heavier than usual. One more sweater gone from the closet. She'd moved it last night to the dorm while Adrian was on a call. She heard the shower off. Put on the smile. The perfect, polite stranger smile. "Good morning," she said when Adrian came out, tie half-done. "Good morning," he said. Studying her. That empty hanger still in his mind. Before she could do the tie thing, the doorbell rang. Adrian frowned. "I'm not expecting—" Nora opened it. Marcus. In a hoodie. Not his usual suit. Holding a paper bag. Trying to look casual and failing miserably. "Morning! I was in the area! Brought bagels!" Marcus said way too loud. Nora blinked. "Oh... hi." Adrian stared at Marcus. _You're early. We said 8._ Marcus stared back. _Traffic._ Dante's voice from behind Marcus: "He dragged me. Said you had good coffee." Dante appeared, doctor calm, but his eyes went straight to Nora. Then to her hair — tied up, a few loose strands. Julian popped up last. "And I was... also in the area!" Nora forced a smile, stepping back. "Come in... I made enough toast." Four men in her small kitchen now. Her plan to have quiet breakfast and slip out to the dorms was ruined. "Mr. Sinclair, your coffee," she said, sliding it to Adrian. Careful not to touch his hand. Marcus heard it. _Mr. Sinclair._ His jaw tightened. "Wow, Luna — I mean, Nora! — you made breakfast?" Marcus caught himself fast. Nora tilted her head. "Luna?" "Luna... like, lunar... like your sweater is like the moon!" Julian jumped in, terrible lie. "So white!" Nora gave a small laugh, but she was nervous now. Too many people. Her backpack by the door felt too obvious. "I should get ready for school," she said, turning toward the bathroom. Perfect. Dante moved. "Hey Nora, you dropped a hair — on your sweater," Dante said softly, reaching — not creepy, doctor gentle — and plucking a long strand from her shoulder. Nora froze. "Oh, thank you." Dante slipped it into his pocket. Smooth. In the bathroom, Marcus followed, pretending to look for the hand wash. "Your bathroom smells nice," he said, eyes scanning — toothbrush, hairbrush. He saw it. Her hairbrush, full of dark hairs. He pulled out a small zip bag from his hoodie, quick, hands shaking, and pulled three strands with roots. Behind him, Nora's voice: "Marcus? What are you doing?" Marcus jumped, shoving the bag into his pocket. Turned around with her hairbrush in hand. "You... you have a lot of hair loss! You should use rosemary oil! My sister Serena uses—" He stopped himself. "I mean—" Nora stared at him, confused. Then she smiled that perfect fake smile again. "Thank you. I'll try it." She took the brush from him. Their fingers brushed. Marcus felt his chest tighten — 8 years. His baby sister, standing here making toast for a man she didn't remember marrying, while he was stealing her hair to prove she was his. Adrian watched from the kitchen doorway. Saw everything. "Marcus, can I talk to you outside?" Adrian said, voice low. On the balcony, Marcus handed him the bag, hands still shaking. "Got it. Three with root. Dante got one too," Marcus whispered. "My mom's safe — baby tooth from when Luna was 6. I can get it tonight when she's at charity." Adrian looked inside — Nora back at the table, packing her backpack, checking her phone: _Dorm 3B — key ready._ She looked up, saw him watching, and smiled. Polite. Distant. "Perfect, Mr. Sinclair? I should go. Early class." She walked out, backpack heavy, heels steady. Not running. Not crying. Inside, Julian whispered: "Did we just steal our best friend's wife's hair?" Dante, holding his own zip bag like it was gold, said: "We just stole Luna Whitmore's DNA." Behind them, Adrian stared at the empty chair where Nora sat, at the toast she made like a stranger, and whispered: "Come home soon, Luna."
