CHAPTER 1
NORA
"Hello, Mr. Berry. How are you doing today?"
"Alright. The packages will be delivered to you by 6pm today. Thanks for your patronage."
The call ended and I placed a quick call to the company. "Good afternoon, sir. The client, Mr. Berry sent in $572,088 for fifteen cartons."
The manager confirmed the receipt sent. I was about to call the delivery guy when I received a call from Liam's school. I wasn't the type that leave my job for anything, but I saw Liam as my most priority.
"Hello, Miss Gilly."
"Hello, Miss. Olsen. I called to inform you that Liam was sick today, and it was severe that he has to take him to the hospital."
"Please, send the address!"
I took a cab since I didn't have a car. I haven't been to the hospital before but I knew where it was. It wasn't a public hospital, it was private and could only be afforded for the rich. I was worried when I found out Liam was sent there.
I called his class teacher who told me he was admitted. "Miss. Gilly. Why did you take Liam to Jael Hospital? Don't you think it is so expensive?"
"Yes. The Chairwoman of the school board insisted that her students must be sent there. She thinks their medical attention is the best in the city."
"Actually she's right. But I don't have the money to meet the cost of their treatments."
"So, what are you going to do now? Because they have already given him some medicines and syringes."
I sighed. "Well, let me get to him first."
I got to the hospital, the receptionist wasn't responding to me properly. I waited for her to get to me, yet she was insisting I sit and wait. After waiting for several minutes, I went back to the receptionist.
"Hello, I've been waiting for over fifteen minutes, but you are attending to other person who came after me."
"Madam, sit and wait."
I was about going back to sit when I saw the class teacher walking past me. "Miss Gilly! Thank goodness I've seen you. Please, where is Liam?"
"Oh, Miss Nora, how long have you been here? I would have could but..." She scratched the back of her head looking away.
"But what? Where is Liam?" Miss Gilly held my hand and pulled me close to her and moved to a corner.
"Please, don't freak out. When the doctor called me to his office to ask me some questions, Liam left his room and we are still looking for him."
"What?!" I said aloud. "Oh, my God, why did you let him walk away in this big hospital?"
We walk through the floors, looking around and asking the nurses for Liam. They all told us that they haven't seen any child like that. I was almost crying when Miss Gilly suggested we go back to the patient room and check again.
When we got to the patient room we saw it empty. "This was where he was."
Then I heard a familiar voice behind me. "Mom."
"Liam? Where have you been?" Miss Gilly asked. I rushed and picked him up and carried him to my body. I hugged him tightly without saying a word.
"Mom, why are you crying?"
I cleaned my eyes immediately. "Nothing my dear. Please don't be running around like that. Okay?"
"Sorry mom. Mommy, an old man saw me and called me Grandson." I was a bit confused, then I ignored it as something not to be concerned about.
"Mom, did Grandpa come down from heaven to visit me?"
I smiled, "No. Grandpa can't come down from heaven. Who you saw wasn't Grandpa."
"Actually we found him with a man who said he was his Grandson. To be honest..." The nurse smirked, "They really do look alike."
"You got to be kidding me. My father died when I was six, did you guys loosed a psychiatrist patient from his room?"
"He wasn't a psychiatrist patient. The doctor want to see you now, miss." I knew what I said might have offended the nurse.
"Sorry about what I said."
"Can we go we now?"
I and Miss Gilly followed behind the nurse to the doctor's office. The doctor was a middle aged man with glasses and a bald head.
"Welcome, you can have a seat. You are?"
"Nora. Nora Olsen."
"Nora Olsen," he wrote down my name on a paper. He dropped his pen and rest his back on the chair. "Well, your son took some bad food that affected his stomach and he fainted. Thank goodness the school acted on time and resuscitate him back to consciousness, from what I heard. They brought here weak, but we gave him treatment. He is really a strong boy, he responded to treatments quickly and he's fine now."
"Bad food? I only gave him spaghetti and water for breakfast, he didn't take anything to school for lunch."
"That was the problem, Miss Nora. Liam have always been coming without food, and we are staying for hours. He will be hungry, and as a child he will eat from his classmates," Gilly said.
"I was planning on having a time to speak with you about that. You need to do whatever you can to give Liam some lunch to take to school. He can't be going with only breakfast till 2pm."
"We barely do have to what to eat at home. Where do you want me to get them? My rent is due and we don't have the money to pay. We may be evicted from the house few days from now. I don't know where I will have the money to pay for his treatment today."
"There won't be any need for that," the doctor said.
"What? How? Was his treatment free?"
"Not really. We don't run a free treatment here, but someone paid the bill. Do you have a rich father? Because the man came claiming the boy was his grandson and looked so sure about it."
At this point I didn't see it as something I could ignore. Miss Gilly threw a shocked gaze at me. "What is this man's name? Where is he from?"
"If you know who he was you also will be shocked. It is Eriksen Halvor, I was so surprised to see him in my office."
Eriksen Halvor. The first name doesn't ring a bell, but the last name did. It was the last name of someone I did'nt want to remember. A man that left me four years ago without a word, who allowed me take up the responsibility of my child all by myself.
"I don't know who this Eriksen is, all I can see is wherever he is all thanks to him. It's not easy to see generous people these days. Thank you doctor for your time.."
"I was only doing my job."
"Can I go home with him?"
"Yes, you can. But before you go, take this to the pharmacist. He will prescribe some drugs with it for the little boy." He handed over a piece of paper to me. "Have a nice day.
Days past, I went about my business. My work was a remote one, and was based on contract. The contract I had with my company wasn't a good paying one but it was manageable. I would make some sales for the company products and submit report to the manager weekly. My payment was a fluctuating one.
It got to a week where sales was so bad. I got a message to my email from the company headquarters that I should take a break from the job. My eyes were filled with tears, I had thought of many things, but none was problem-solving.
The only money I had was used for the house rent which I paid yesterday. Currently I had no money on me for anything. I sat down thinking throughout the day into the evening. I didn't have the mind to cope with Liam's assignment.
Then I heard a knock at the door. Who would that be? I ignored, but then the knock was more louder and Liam had to call me aloud from the living room.
"Mom! Someone is here to see you."
I got out to the living room and who I saw made my body froze. How did he know my house?
