Damon’s expression shifted-surprise flickered across his features before that dangerous smile returned, sharper as he moved closer. His voice dropped to something darker, more intimate when he circled her slowly, like a predator, but despite the predatory smile, there was genuine curiosity in his eyes.
“Expecting me. So you weren't just being polite back there. You wanted me to follow. That takes guts. Most people run from what I am. You’re inviting it. Do you have some kind of death wish, or…”
He stopped directly in front of her, close enough that she could feel the unnatural coolness radiating from his skin.
“So what now? Are you going to tell me you’re not afraid? Or are you going to admit that fear is exactly what you came out here looking for?”
Damon’s question hung in the mountains' cool air like an echo that refused to fade. Evie responded clearly, without any hint of fear,
“I’m not afraid, no. I’m sure if you wanted to scare me you would have, or if you wanted me dead, that would have happened as well. But that’s not your intention, at least not tonight, and I know exactly what you do want tonight anyway. It's not my first rodeo.”
Damon’s entire body went rigid. For a moment, he just stared at her-really stared-like she had said something in a language he only understood, and he laughed, low and dangerous.
“Not your first rodeo. Jesus. You’ve dealt with vampires before. That changes things.”
His voice dropped even lower.
“Because now I don’t have to hold back the explanation. I can just...”
He reached out. His cool fingers brushed against her cheek—a touch that was both possessive and questioning. He stepped closer, his eyes darkening into something almost black with hunger and intent as he continued....
“Show you exactly what I want.”
Evie smiled
“I think I already have an idea of what you want, and it's not typical for you, is it? You are usually more of a predator, aren’t you? You don’t let that side out much, right?”
Damon’s hand dropped from her cheek. He turned away slightly, ran a hand through his hair-a gesture of frustration, or maybe something closer to vulnerability, which, for Damon, was frustrating. His voice was quieter now, stripped of its usual razor’s edge.
“Predator. Yeah. That’s what I am.”
“That’s what I do.”
“I don’t let anyone in, but you’re not prey.”
He looked back at her, and there was something raw in his expression-something he didn’t usually let anyone see. His jaw tightened as he paused.
“That's the problem. With you, I don’t want to hunt. I want to...”
He trailed off, clearly uncomfortable with the admission. He stepped closer again; this time his movements were less calculated, more honest.
“You see right through the act, don’t you? That’s dangerous for both of us.”
He stepped into her personal space.
She looked up through her eyelashes and said:
“Why? Because you feel threatened or because you want to be understood. To feel something real for once and that also scares the s**t out of you, doesn’t it?”
Damon went still. His entire body tensed-like she’d just landed a punch he didn’t see coming. His voice was barely audible as he said,
“You don’t get to do that...”
But he didn’t move away. Instead, he stepped closer, his dark eyes locked on hers with an intensity that’s almost suffocating. His voice is softer, almost broken as he said,
“One-hundred and sixty-eight years. Do you know what that’s like? Feeling everything so deeply that you have to bury it under sarcasm and cruelty just to survive another decade?”
His hand reached for her again-this time it was not possessive. It was searching as he exhaled sharply, the vulnerability in his voice was devastating.
“Then someone like you walked into a diner with a smirk and a motorcycle, and suddenly...”
He stuttered.…
“Suddenly I remember what it feels like to want something real instead of just wanting to hurt or forget.”
Evie smiled and reached out to him as well,
“Yes. I felt that from the moment you walked over to me...so Damon, what are you going to do about that run? Laugh it off and hide or take what you want.”
The challenge landed differently than it would have from anyone else, and Damon’s breathing became heavier. His hand trembled slightly as it reached for her face-not the controlled predator anymore, but something rawer, more desperate.
He closed the distance between them, his forehead nearly touching hers. The cool of his skin contrasted sharply with the warmth that radiated from her. His voice was hoarse as he whispered,
"I'm done running. I'm done hiding behind the sarcasm. What I want... is you. Exactly like this. No games. No masks."
His hand moved to the back of her neck, fingers threaded gently through her hair. His other hand settled at her waist, possessive yet grounding, his dark eyes searched hers. The air between them crackled with electricity. He waited—not pushing, simply giving her the choice.
Evie said softly,
"And you still haven’t said what you’re going to do about that…"
She exhaled as her pulse quickened and goosebumps rose along her arms. Damon’s pupils dilated as he caught her scent—that intoxicating rhythm called to every instinct he possessed. Her arousal filled every cell in his body with excitement, and his jaw clenched with the effort of restraint.
His voice dropped to a gravelly whisper against her neck.
"You want me to stop thinking and just act?"
He asked it like he was asking permission as he pulled her closer, his lips brushed the sensitive skin of her neck.
His hand at her waist tightened—not roughly, but protectively—as he breathed her in deeply.
"Because right now, every vampire instinct I have is screaming to taste you. To mark you. To make sure everyone knows you're mine and only mine."
He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his expression caught between hunger and something dangerously close to tenderness.
"But I'm not going to bite you. Not tonight. Tonight, I'm going to show you exactly what you make me feel."
His mouth finally found hers. She moaned into his touch as his lips came down to her neck and his arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her tighter into him, which allowed her to feel his growing erection inside his jeans, pressed against her with an intensity that she felt in her bones. His lips found the curve where her neck met her shoulder, pressing kisses that were equal parts tender and hungry. A low growl rumbled from his chest—deep and unmistakable. Against her skin, his voice was rough and barely restrained,
“God, you taste like freedom and home at the same time.”
He pulled back just enough to capture her mouth again, this time deeper, more urgent. His hands slid down her sides, as he mapped the curve of her waist before settling firmly on her hips. He pressed her hard against him, grinding smoothly. Between kisses, as they were breathing heavily, he said,
“You have no idea what you are doing to me. One-hundred and sixty-eight years and nothing-nothing compares to this.”
His fingers gripped the fabric of her shirt, he clearly fought the urge to tear it away. The intensity in his dark eyes were almost feral, but he deliberately controlled it in every move.
He looked deeply into her eyes, as he searched for how she was feeling. He’d bared his soul, and she hadn’t given him anything.
“Tell me you want this. Tell me you want me like I want you, please.”
Evie smiled with that signature smirk in place when,
“Yes... I do. I kinda figured you would have known that by now. But if you need me to say it then... Yes, Damon, please take me...Take what I can give.. and then do it all over again and again. I want you but not for just now.”
Damon's control shattered. He lifted her effortlessly, her legs instinctively wrapped around his waist as he carried her toward the nearby tent. His mouth never left hers, his kisses hungry and utterly unrestrained. He breathed against her lips as he declared,
“You’re mine. Say it...say it, Evie. I need to hear you say it.”
His fingers traced the newly exposed skin, as he left trails of coolness that contrasted with the heat building between them.
His eyes were completely black vampire eyes... but there was no bloodlust in his gaze.
Only want.
Only need.
She leaned into his touch, answering him without words.
“Yes!!Yes!! I'm yours.”
The thought startled her as much as it did Damon.
How could she feel this way about a man she’d only just met? Yet it felt undeniable.
Something deep inside her recognized him, as if two missing pieces had finally found where they belonged. Neither of them understood it yet, but at that moment, they both knew one thing:
This was different.
Damon's control unraveled as his heart had just been given a home. His hands gripped her hips as he positioned himself, his breath came in ragged gasps against her neck. His voice broke with the intensity of his emotions.
“Look at me. I need to see you when I’m inside you.”
He entered her slowly at first as he savored every second, every sensation.
His dark eyes locked onto hers, vulnerable and raw in an almost shocking way. He groaned deeply.
“Christ... you’re perfect. You’re everything. I’m not letting you leave. Not now. Not ever.”
Evie’s breath hitched with the thought of his words. She knew she couldn’t stay, but she didn’t want to break this moment for anything. But she knew she had to, so without thinking,
“You don’t know what you're asking. Damon, it's not that simple.”
Damon slowed his movements, his breathing was still heavy but his intensity shifted. He pulled back slightly. He searched her face with those dark, conflicted eyes. His voice was hoarse with fear. Fear of a loss that hadn’t even happened yet.
“Then tell me. Tell me what's complicated about this.”
He was still inside her, but his grip had loosened-less possessive, more questioning. His thumb traced circles on her hip.
“Because from where I’m standing, this feels like the only simple thing that’s ever made sense. What aren’t you telling me?”
Outside, the forest was quiet except for the distant sound of the campfire as it crackled. Inside, there was only the weight of what was being asked- what he was asking.
He tried again, softer.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
She pulled away,
“Damon, you didn’t ask how I knew vampires existed... The one who knows me wants me, but I don’t want him, and it's dangerous; you deserve to be far, far away from me.”
She said with a tear sliding down her cheek, and Damon stilled. His entire body went rigid as he pulled away, his expression hardened, as he withdrew from her, running a hand through his disheveled hair. The vulnerability vanished, replaced by something dangerous and territorial.
Voice sharp and lethal; he stood, as he paced the tent like a caged predator. His shirt still unbuttoned, jaw clenched tight, and he asked,
“Who? And don’t lie to me- I'll know.”
He turned back to face her and stepped closer, his eyes blazing as he fired one question after another.
“How long has he been chasing you? And more importantly, why didn’t you tell me before I-”
He stopped himself as he saw the tears started to drop, but her face was morphing into something else: anger. Maybe he wasn’t sure, he wrestled with the implications,
“We need to leave. Now. Before he finds you here.”
Evie got up, put on her clothes, and stepped out of the tent, pissed she looked at Damon, points her finger at him.
“I didn’t do anything wrong here, Damon. Don’t give me that s**t. He’s not going to find me. I’m spelled, and you didn’t ask. I told you it wasn’t my first rodeo and you?...you didn’t ask. and now you think you can just tell me what to do? f**k you."
She stepped outside. Damon abandoned his pacing and followed a moment later. The anger faded from his expression, replaced by something far more complicated—frustration tempered by understanding.
He stared into the darkness beyond the campsite, his jaw clenched. Every instinct screamed to hunt down the man she was talking about. Another part of him couldn't ignore the truth she'd just thrown back at him. She had warned him. He simply hadn't listened.
He looked down, saw her trying to walk away, grabbed her wrist, pulling her back toward him, and said his voice quieter.
“You’re right. I didn't ask; I just...took what I wanted, same old Damon. So you're protected. Spelled,”
He sat at the picnic table, looking back at her, his expression was raw. Then he gestured between them, the weight of what just happened hung in the air as he asked,
“Who is he? And more importantly-why are you telling me this now, after”
She sighed, looked around, chose her words carefully then said,
“I didn’t mean to find you or to feel this way about you. I was looking for a witch, that’s all. But then you happened; I couldn’t lie to you or even keep it from you by just not saying anything...Maybe I should have said it before or waited until after. I’m sorry I just... I didn't know how to tell you. And then everything happened so fast. I...
