Chapter 3 Blood and Secrets Pt. 1

Damon’s shoulders dropped. He sat there for a long moment, processing what she had just said- that she came looking for a witch, not him. That this was an accident, not design. voice was soft, almost childlike, as he said. “You fell for me by accident. You didn’t plan this.” He reaches out, his fingers brushing her arm gently as he stands, looking into the darkness of the forest. His silhouette is tense, conflicted as he says, “A witch. So that’s who spelled you. Someone you trust. The vampire who wants you-he’s powerful enough that you needed magical protection. Which means he’s old. Dangerous.” Evie walks over to the fire, tosses another log onto the flames, and watches as the sparks drift into the night. She kneels, fanning the fire for a moment before looking back at Damon. “Do you really want to know? She asks quietly. Because once I tell you... everything changes, and if I trust you with this, I have to believe you won’t betray me.” The worry etched across her face isn’t that Damon would turn on her. It’s the weight of the secret itself. Others would sell her out without hesitation, and once the truth leaves her lips, it can never be taken back. Damon moves towards her, kneeling in front of her as his dark eyes are intensely searching her in a way that demands honesty. Voice steady, almost a vow. “I won’t sell you out. Whatever this is-whoever he is- you have my word, and if knowing changes everything? Then it changes. But at least it’ll be real.” Somewhere deep in the forest, a twig snaps and Damon’s head whips toward the sound, his body instantly tense. His vampire senses are on high alert, and he whispers, “Tell me. Now, before whoever that is gets closer.” The night suddenly feels less safe, less isolated. Whatever secret she’s carrying- it’s about to become very real as she takes a deep breath and says it like a prayer so that only he can hear her, “Klaus.” That one word, that one name changes everything. Damon’s entire body goes rigid. The color drains from his face, and he stands abruptly, pacing the campsite like a caged animal. His hands curl into fists, and he repeats her word, voice dangerous and controlled fury, “Klaus. Klaus f*****g Mikaelson is hunting you. And you’ve been riding through the country exposed until you found a witch to spell you?” He turns back, his vampire eyes blazing red with rage-not at her, but at the situation. “How long. How long has he been after you? And Evie...what does Klaus want with you that’s worth crossing an entire continent? Just who the f**k are you?” He steps closer, his voice dropping to something almost lethal. The protective possessiveness in his stance has shifted into something darker-strategic. Dangerous. She stands pacing now as she throws up her hands in exasperation and says, “In some twisted way, he thinks he loves me. I don’t know. He scares the s**t out of me. I think there’s a lot more to it than that, something in my blood, but I don’t know. I can’t let him have it; that’s all I really can tell you right now.” Damon stops mid-pace as she gets up and starts walking around the fire. The rage in his expression crumbles into something raw-confusion, hurt, understanding all at once. He misunderstood her but lands on a real question anyway. And says” I scare you?’’ He doesn’t move closer. Instead, he sits back down on the picnic table, giving her space. His voice is quieter, almost vulnerable as he looks at her directly and says, “Klaus is an Original. Immortal, Unstoppable, and you’re saying I scare you more than that?” He runs a hand through his hair, processing. “It’s because this is real. Klaus’s obsession is about possession-control-power. But what’s happening between us. He pauses. That requires you to actually feel something back. That’s terrifying, isn’t it?” His dark eyes search hers with painful understanding as he says, “You’re afraid that I’ll hurt you. Or worse -that you’ll let me.” She stops dead in her tracks and says, “No... no. He scares the s**t out of me. Not you, Damon. Not you.” She takes a shaky breath, trying to steady herself. “But you’re not wrong; this indeed scares me...” She gestures between them. “I barely know you, and somehow I already care what happens to you.” Her voice breaks. “If Klaus finds out about us... I’m terrified he’ll use you to get to me.” She lowers her eyes. “And I’m just as terrified that I’ll let myself love you anyway.” Damon’s entire body relaxes. He reaches for her, pulling her close against his chest. His cool fingers thread through her hair as he holds her. And with a soft voice, almost a whisper, he says, “I know there’s a lot to be scared of, and I am scared that I’ll f**k this up and that you’ll leave even before we get started, but those fears are normal fears that we will conquer together. But Klaus, he should scare you. He’s a monster.” He presses his lips to the top of her head, breathing her in. As he tilts her chin up to look at him, he finishes. “But me? I’m just a vampire who finally found something worth being better for.” A sound echoes through the forest-distant but deliberate. Footsteps, multiple sets. Damon tenses immediately, his protective instinct flaring. “We need to move. Now,” he asks, “the spell-how long does it last? And does Klaus know you’re in Mystic Falls?” Damon asks her as he stands, extending his hand to her, his expression shifting into calculated predator mode. She looks around, trying to get her bearings and see if her wards have been breached, as she says, “Six months, and I’m on the fourth month. That’s why I need another witch, and no, he doesn’t know where I am. If he did, he would already have me. I couldn’t fight him off. Not by myself; that’s why I run and stay hidden.” Damon nods sharply, his mind already calculating. As he repeats, “Two months. We have two months to find a witch strong enough to renew the spell before Klaus picks up your scent. Not a problem; we’ve got this.” He says as he moves quickly, helping her finish getting dressed, his movements efficient and purposeful, as he says, “Bonnie Bennett. She’s the most powerful witch in Mystic Falls-maybe in the entire state. If anyone can strengthen that spell, keep Klaus from finding you. It’s her.” He pauses, cupping her face in his hands. The footsteps outside the parameters grow louder. Damon’s eyes flash red. “But we have to tell her everything. No more secrets. Klaus is dangerous enough without us flying blind.” As they start putting their jackets on, he hears another twig and says with a low, lethal voice, “Stay behind me.” Just then, Stefan steps out of the forest with Elena, his expression cautious but controlled. Elena is beside him, her eyes wide with concern. Behind them, a tall man with sharp features-Bryon-emerges from the shadows. Stefan says, with a calm voice, “Damon. We need to talk. Now” his eyes flick to her, then back to his brother with clear understanding as he continues “Caroline called. She sensed something-a magical disturbance near the campsite. We came to investigate.” Elena steps forward, her gaze moving between Damon and Evie with barely concealed curiosity as she asks, “And who is she?” Bryon remains silent, studying both of them with an intensity that suggests he already knows more than he’s letting on. Evie looks worried, then she says, “Hello Bryon, I didn’t know you were here, gold stars! on finding me.” Bryon’s expression shifts-a flicker of recognition, then something darker. He steps forward slightly, his jaw tightening as he says, “Evelyn. I wasn’t expecting to find you here. I guess it’s my lucky day after all.” There’s an edge to his voice-possessive, calculating. His eyes move from Evie to Damon with unmistakable territorial assessment. Stefan’s body language changes immediately. He catches the dynamic, his protective instincts flaring. He steps subtly closer to Damon. Creating a united front saying quietly to Evie, “You know him?” Elena’s eyes dart between Bryon and Evie, piecing something together. Her hand instinctively reaches for Stefan’s arm and whispers, “There’s something off about him.” Bryon looks at the scene unfolding in-front of him and says with a smirk and a slight chuckle, “I thought you said you didn’t want to have anything to do with the supernatural anymore. But here you are 20 years later, wrapped up like a blanket in its arms literally. How cute.” Damon’s arm tightens around her waist, his eyes flashing dangerously red, his voice low and lethal as he asks, “You know each other. How?” Stefan’s expression hardens as he pieces it together-Bryon isn’t just some random supernatural ex-hunter. He’s connected to Evie’s past. He steps forward, his calm demeanor cracking slightly, and says, “Damon, step back.” But Bryon’s smile turns cold, predatory as he looks at Evie and says, “Twenty years, Evie. And you still run. Still hide. Still pretend you can escape what you are.” His gaze locks onto her with an intensity that mirrors Damon’s possessiveness, but twisted-darker, more obsessive. He turns to her and smiles as he says, “Klaus isn’t the only one who’s been looking for you. I’m sure you know that, but it doesn’t matter now. I have you, and you’re not getting away this time.” Evie’s eyes burn bright blue as she pulls away from Damon and says, “I know, but you can’t use me either.” Within a microsecond, Bryon was on his knees, withering in pain as Evie clenches her fingers together, not even touching him, and says, “You’re done,” and with a pop his head explodes into fine dust. Blood splatters across the forest floor. Stefan and Elena freeze in shock. Elena cries in a voice barely above a whisper, “OH MY GOD.” Stefan’s eyes widen-he’s seen violence, but not like this. Not raw magical power unleashed with such brutal efficiency that nothing was left but a kind of blood dust. He turns to Damon, his voice strained as he asks, “What the hell is she?” Damon just smiles voice rough with admiration, protection, and something a bit darker as he says, “Mine.” “She’s not running from the supernatural. She’s been hiding from people who want to use her. There’s a big difference.” He sees it clear as day without any questions. She looks at them and looks down, feeling ashamed but knowing she had no choice but to protect those who were with her and to save herself. “I’m a conductor. I pull out supernatural energy from the cosmic waves and push it into any form I want. It’s partly why he thinks he loves me. He wants me to have his babies. That’s the part I didn’t want to talk about before.” Stefan’s jaw clenches. He understands immediately what that means-a conductor. Someone who can channel and weaponize cosmic energy itself. He says with a voice tight as a drum, “Klaus wants to breed with you. Create hybrid offspring with that power? Oh, hell no.” Elena’s hand covers her mouth at the thought of the destruction that would bring and says, “That’s...that’s insane.” Damon pulls her closer, his possessive grip intensifying. His dark eyes burn with something primal. And he says in a dangerous whisper, “Over my dead body. Again.” He turns to Stefan, his expression hardened into something lethal. “We need Bonnie. Tonight. And we need to fortify this campsite-warded, spelled, everything. If Klaus finds out what has happened here, he will find her.” The implications hang heavy in the blood-soaked air. As she says, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get you into this.”
