Damon’s expression shifts-surprise flickering across his features before that dangerous smile returns, sharper now as he moves closer. His voice drops to something darker, more intimate as he circles her slowly, like a predator, but there’s something almost reverent in the way his eyes move across her as his eyes light up, “expecting me. So you weren't just being polite back there. You wanted me to follow. That takes guts. Most people run from what I am. You’re inviting it. Do you have some kind of death wish, or...”
The air between them crackles with tension-electric and heavy. He stops directly in front of her now, close enough that she can feel the coolness radiating from his skin as he asks, “So what now? Are you going to tell me you’re not afraid? Or are you going to admit that fear is exactly what you came out here looking for?”
Damon’s questions hung in the mountains' cool air like an echo that refused to fade. Evie says clearly, without a hint of fear, “I’m not afraid, no. I’m sure if you wanted to scare me you would have, or if you wanted me dead, that would have happened as well. But that’s not your intention, at least not tonight, and I know exactly what you do want tonight anyway. It's not my first rodeo.”
Damon’s entire body goes rigid. For a moment, he just stares at her-really stares-like she just said something in a language he only understands, and he laughs, low and dangerous. “Not your first rodeo. Jesus. You’ve dealt with vampires before. That changes things. His voice drops even lower. Because now I don’t have to hold back the explanation. I can just...”
He reaches out, his cool fingers brushing against her cheek-a touch that’s both possessive and questioning. He steps closer, his eyes darkening to something almost black with hunger and intent as he continues.... “Show you exactly what I want.”
Evie smiles and says, “I think I already have an idea of what you want, and it's not typical for you, is it? You are usually more of a predator, aren’t you? You don’t let that side out much, right?” Damon’s hand drops from her cheek. He turns away slightly, running a hand through his hair-a gesture of frustration, or maybe something closer to vulnerability, which, for Damon, is frustrating. His voice is quieter now, stripped of its usual razor edge.
Predator, “Yeah. That’s what I am. That’s what I do. I don’t let anyone in, but you’re not prey.” He looks back at her, and there’s something raw in his expression-something he doesn’t usually let anyone see. And he pauses, his jaw tightening. “That's the problem. With you, I don’t want to hunt. I want to...”
He trails off, clearly uncomfortable with the admission; he steps closer again; this time his movements are less calculated, more honest. “You see right through the act, don’t you? That’s dangerous for both of us.” He says as he steps into her personal space. She looks up through her eyelashes and says: “Why? Because you feel threatened or because you want to be understood. To feel something real for once and that also scares the s**t out of you, doesn’t it?”
Damon goes still. His entire body tenses-like she’s just landed a punch he didn’t see coming. His voice is barely audible as he says, “You don’t get to do that...” But he doesn’t move away. Instead, he steps closer, his dark eyes locked on hers with an intensity that’s almost suffocating. His voice is softer now, almost broken as he says, “One-hundred and sixty-eight years. Do you know what that’s like? Feeling everything so deeply that you have to bury it under sarcasm and cruelty just to survive another decade?”
His hand reaches for her again-this time it's not possessive. It's searching as he exhales sharply, and the vulnerability in his voice is devastating. And then someone like her walks into a diner with a smirk and a motorcycle, and suddenly. He stutters”....suddenly I remember what it feels like to want something real instead of just wanting to hurt or forget.”
Evie smiles and reaches out to him as well, as she says, “Yes. I felt that from the moment you walked over to me...so Damon, what are you going to do about that run? Laugh it off and hide or take what you want”, and the challenge lands differently than it would have from anyone else, and Damon’s breathing becomes heavier. His hand trembles slightly as it reaches for her face-not the controlled predator anymore, but something rawer, more desperate.
He closes the distance between her, his forehead nearly touching hers. The cool of his skin contrasts sharply with the warmth radiating from her. His voice is hoarse as he whispers, "I'm done running. I'm done hiding behind the sarcasm. What I want... is you. Exactly like this. No games. No masks."
His hand moves to the back of her neck, fingers threading gently through her hair. His other hand settles at her waist, possessive yet grounding, as his dark eyes search hers. The air between them crackles with electricity as he waits—not pushing, but present. Vulnerable. Real.
Evie says softly, "And you still haven’t said what you’re going to do about that…" She exhales as her pulse quickens and goosebumps rise along her arms. Damon’s pupils dilate as he catches her scent—that intoxicating rhythm calling to every instinct he possesses. Her arousal fills every cell in his body with excitement, and his jaw clenches with the effort of restraint.
His voice drops to a gravelly whisper against her neck."You want me to stop thinking and just act?" He asks it like a request for permission as he pulls her closer, his lips brushing the sensitive skin of her neck.
His hand at her waist tightens—not roughly, but protectively—as he breathes her in deeply."Because right now, every vampire instinct I have is screaming to taste you. To mark you. To make sure everyone knows you're mine and only mine." He pulls back just enough to look into her eyes, his expression caught between hunger and something dangerously close to tenderness. "But I'm not going to bite you. Not tonight. Tonight, I'm going to show you exactly what you make me feel."
His mouth finally finds hers. She moans into his touch as his lips finally come down to her neck and his arms wrap around her waist, pulling her tightly to him, allowing her to feel his erection growing inside his jeans, pressed against her with an intensity that she feels in her bones. His lips find the curve where her neck meets her shoulder, pressing kisses that are equal parts tender and hungry. A low growl rumbles from his chest-barely restrained. Against her skin, his voice rough and hungry, he says, “God, you taste like freedom and home at the same time.”
He pulls back just enough to capture her mouth again, this time deeper, more urgent. His hands slide down her sides, mapping the curve of her waist before settling firmly on her hips, pressing her harder against him, grinding smoothly. Between kisses, breathing heavily, he says, “You have no idea what you are doing to me. One-hundred and sixty-eight years and nothing-nothing compares to this.” His fingers grip the fabric of her shirt, clearly fighting the urge to tear it away. The intensity in his dark eyes is almost feral, but he is deliberately controlling it in every move.
He looks deeply into her eyes, searching for how she is feeling. He’s bared his soul, and she has given him nothing, so he asks. “Tell me you want this. Tell me you want me like I want you, please.” Evie smiles with that signature smirk in place when she says, “Yes... I do. I kinda figured you would have known that by now. But if you need me to say it then... Yes, Damon, please take me...Take what I can give.. and then do it all over again and again. I want you but not for just now.”
Damon’s control shatters. He lifts her effortlessly, her legs instinctively wrapping around his waist as he carries her toward the nearby tent. His mouth never leaves hers-hungry, consuming, utterly unrestrained now. He breathes against her lips as he demands from her, “You’re mine. Say it...say it, Evie. I need to hear you say it.” His fingers trace the newly exposed skin, leaving trails of coolness that contrast with the heat building between them.
His eyes are black now vampire eyes but there's no bloodlust in his gaze. Only want. Only need. She leans into his touch, answering him without words. “Yes!!Yes!! I'm yours.” The thought startles her as much as it does Damon.
How could she feel this way about a man she'd only just met? Yet it feels undeniable. Something deep inside her recognizes him, as if two missing pieces have finally found where they belong. Neither of them understands it yet, but at that moment, they both know one thing:
This is different.
Damon's control unravels as his heart has just been given a home. His hands grip her hips as he positions himself, his breath coming in ragged gasps against her neck. His voice breaks with the intensity of his emotions as he says, “Look at me. I need to see you when I’m inside you.” He enters her slowly at first-savoring every second, every sensation. His dark eyes lock onto hers, vulnerable and raw in an almost shocking way. And he groans deeply. “Christ... you’re perfect. You’re everything. I’m not letting you leave. Not now. Not ever.”
Evie’s breath hitches with the thought of his words. She knows she can’t stay, but she doesn’t want to break this moment for anything. But she knows she has to, so without thinking, “You don’t know what you're asking. Damon, it's not that simple.” Damon slows his movements, his breathing still heavy but his intensity shifting. He pulls back slightly, searching her face with those dark, conflicted eyes. And his voice is hoarse with fear. Fear of a loss that hasn’t even happened yet.
“Then tell me. Tell me what's complicated about this.” He's still inside her, but his grip has loosened-less possessive now, more questioning. His thumb traces circles on her hip. “Because from where I’m standing, this feels like the only simple thing that’s ever made sense. What aren’t you telling me?” Outside the tent, the forest is quiet except for the distant sound of the campfire crackling. Inside, there’s only the weight of what’s being asked- what he's asking.
He tries again, softer. “What aren’t you telling me?” She pulls away and says, “Damon, you didn’t ask how I knew vampires existed... The one who knows me wants me, but I don’t want him, and it's dangerous; you deserve to be far, far away from me.” She says with a tear sliding down her cheek, and Damon stills. His entire body goes rigid as he pulls back slowly, his expression hardening, and he withdraws from her, running a hand through his disheveled hair. The vulnerability vanishes, replaced by something dangerous and territorial.
Voice sharp and lethal now; he stands, pacing the small tent like a caged predator. His shirt is still unbuttoned, his jaw clenched tight, and he asks, “Who? And don’t lie to me- I'll know.” He turns back to face her and steps closer, eyes blazing as he asks another question before she can answer. “How long has he been chasing you? And more importantly, why didn’t you tell me before I-He stops himself as he sees the tears start to drop, but her face is morphing into something else: anger. Maybe he's not sure, clearly wrestling with the implications as he says, “We need to leave. Now. Before he finds you here.”
Evie gets up, puts on her clothes, and steps out of the tent, pissed as she looks at Damon and points her finger at him. “I didn’t do anything wrong here, Damon. Don’t give me that s**t. He’s not going to find me. I’m spelled, and you didn’t ask. I told you it wasn’t my first rodeo and you?...you didn’t ask. And now you think you can just tell me what to do f**k-you.” She says and starts to walk away. Damon stops pacing and steps out of the tent following her. The anger drains from his face, replaced by something more complex-frustration mixed with understanding.
He looks down, sees her trying to walk away, grabs her wrist, pulling her back towards him, and says his voice quieter now. “You’re right. I didn't ask; I just...took what I wanted, same old Damon. So you're protected. Spelled,” he asks as he sits at the picnic table. He looks back at her, his expression raw. And he gestures between them, the weight of what just happened hanging in the air as he asks, “Who is he? And more importantly-why are you telling me this now, after”
She sighs and looks around, choosing her words carefully as she says, “I didn’t mean to find you or to fall for you. I was looking for a witch, that’s all. But then you happened; I couldn’t lie to you or even keep it from you by just not saying anything...Maybe I should have said it before or waited until after. I’m sorry I just... I didn't know how to tell you. And then everything happened so fast. I...
