Chapter 4 Blood and Secrets Pt. 2

The forest fell silent. No one moved. The only sound was the crackling of the fire and the leaves drifting through the trees where Bryon had stood moments before. Evie looked from one stunned face to the next. She took a shaky breath, forcing herself to push past the shock. There were more important questions now. "How did you know Bryon? Did he know you were coming to see me before you came here?” She continued in a flurry of movement, “I should leave; the magic is sending out waves any witch will feel its power. I’m exposed.” Her voice held an edge, but underneath was something raw-fear masquerading as control. Damon answered as he stepped closer, forcing her to meet his eyes. "Bryon was a hunter. Years ago, but after coming through Mystic Falls. Stefan and I...we changed his mind, and he moved to the other side years ago, or so we thought. I didn’t know he was after you. But that changes nothing. Your running worked for twenty years. Klaus has resources. Money. An army of hybrids; eventually he will find you." Damon’s grip softened slightly. He lowered his voice and looked at his brother. "She needs me. Needs us." Stefan watched the exchange; understanding dawned in his mind. “She’s a conductor.” “Running only delays the inevitable.” “She needs protection.” “Allies.” “You’re right. We need to help brother; I’m with you." Damon nodded and smiled at his brother. "But it’s worked so far; 20 years is a long time to keep someone like him in the dark. I know what I’m doing, more people just makes things harder. More complicated. Puts more people in danger. If there was a way to get him to stop or to kill him, then maybe, but I can’t have your deaths on my conscience.” She sighed as the confidence drained from her voice. "The problem is... I’m starting to slow down, though; age is starting to catch up to me eventually; he’ll get to me. But I can’t have babies, so I don’t know how I could benefit his plans now except for my blood.” Damon's expression changed instantly. The color drained from his face as the full horror of her words hit him. He released her, stepping back as he practically screamed, "Don't you see? It's your blood!" “A conductor’s blood mixed with vampire hybrid venom could create something unprecedented. A higher level hybrid that doesn’t need a doppelganger bloodline. Hybrids that can channel cosmic energy." His voice turned hollow as the realization settled over him. "He doesn’t need you to have his babies, Evie.” “He needs your blood, and he’ll keep hunting until he gets it.” Stefan moved closer, his calm presence grounding them both. “You’ve survived twenty years because you stayed invisible. But age is catching up. Eventually, you’ll slow down enough that he finds you-spell or no spell.” He glanced at Damon and Elena, then back to Evie. “Staying alone isn’t survival anymore. It’s just waiting to lose.” Evie turned away, unwilling to let them see the emotions written across her face. Around them, the forest had returned to life—the distant chorus of crickets and the steady crackle of the fire a stark contrast to the conversation unfolding between them. As Evie’s emotions grew, she could no longer avoid them, and the tears rolled down her face as she turned back, "Well then maybe I should just end it on my terms and burn my blood then he can’t get it and on one gets hurt ever at least not by my blood.” Damon moved so fast he was barely seen. He was in front of her almost instantly, his hands gripped both sides of her face. As he made her see the level of despair she had just struck inside his soul, "No...not. You…" His voice cracked with something raw-desperation wrapped in fury as he said, "You don’t get to decide that not anymore. Not after we have found each-other I’m not letting you go... ever, Evie. You understand?” He pressed his forehead against hers, his breathing heavy and full of emotion. He continued, "I just found you. I’m not losing you to some noble sacrifice bullshit.” Elena wiped at the tears gathering in her eyes. "No one should ever feel like dying is the only way to protect the people they care about." Stephen stepped forward, his expression pained but resolute as he contemplated his next choice, "There’s another way. We kill Klaus. It’s been done before-we know his weaknesses. His family, his obsessions, his pride. He’s not invincible. He thinks he is and has convinced everyone else that he is, but” his voice hardens as he looks around at everyone present and points to them as he states. “But we...we know different.” Evie pulled away and began to pace, the weight of everything warring inside her. "I don't know... that's a lot to ask. I don't know if... it's such a risk. It could backfire. It's not right for me to involve you all in this mess." Elena looked at Stefan. "We could fight him... together?" Damon's eyes never left Evie. "It could backfire. Yeah. A lot of things could go wrong. But you know what else could happen? We win. We end this, and you get to actually live instead of just existing in hiding, always running... and I could love you." He gently cupped her face, drawing her eyes back to his. His voice dropped as he spoke. “I’ve spent 168 years running from things, Evie. From my humanity, from Stefan, from love, and the only time any of it made sense was the last few hours with you. I know this is fast, but you’re mine, and I’m yours; that’s just the way it is now” Stefan watched his brother with quiet understanding-this vulnerability was rare. He smiled as he saw that this woman was what he needed, "Klaus has enemies... lots of enemies. Witches who want him dead. Werewolves he’s wronged. We asked to join you; you’re not asking us. We know that nothing happens overnight, but you won’t be alone anymore.” Evie looked back at Stefan and Elena, then to Damon. "Hmmmm I know that’s the point, so-many people could be hurt or killed. I’m scared; I just don’t know what to do. I feel that this is right" She says, looking at Damon, "But at the same time feel conflicted about bringing you all into it now, for there will be death; I know it. But right now what I need is to find a witch to strengthen the spell, or nothing else matters; he will find me now.” Elena stepped a little closer, her voice gentle. "Being scared doesn't mean you're making the wrong choice." Damon nodded slowly. He understood that this was what she needed right now-not in grand plans to kill Originals, but in the immediate tangible problem of survival. "We can work out everything after we get you safe” “Bonnie, we can get you help. We go to Bonnie tonight." He moved to gather what little she had at the campsite; his movements were purposeful and determined. Stefan pulled out his phone, already in motion. At least for now, they were finally working together. "I’ll call her. Tell her we’re coming.” She won’t like being dragged into this at midnight, but she’ll understand the urgency.” Damon turned back to her, his expression softer now-the protective instinct overriding the rage as he moved toward, "Two months becomes four. Maybe six if Bonnie’s as good as I think she is. That buys us time to figure out the rest.” Evie started to move toward Damon, helping with her things as she nodded, "Ok, but we can wait until morning? She should be rested and in top form and I could use some rest and a bath myself.” She chuckled, looked up at Damon then back at herself knowingly, and her cheeks turned a slight pink. Damon smirked; his expression softened at the sound of her laugh-genuine, lighter than it had been all night. Something in his chest unclenched, "A bath. Yeah, you could use one.” Then winked and said, “So could I." He glanced at Stefan, who nodded and stepped away and gave you both space. Stefan called back toward them and said, "I’ll let Bonnie know we’re coming at dawn. She’ll be ready.” He led Elena a short distance away so the two of them could call Bonnie while giving Damon and Evie a moment alone. The forest settled into quiet as Stefan disappeared into the darkness. Damon turned back to Evie, his dark eyes held that familiar intensity mixed with something almost tender as he stroked her cheek. "Come on. There’s a cabin about a mile from here. Running water, hot shower, actual bed instead of a tent. We’ll handle Klaus when you’re rested. Right now, you need to feel human again." He extended his hand. She reached out for his offered hand, "That sounds wonderful, thank you.” Stephen returned and reported all was well, and Evie told them, “Thank you, and Stefan, I’m sorry for all of this,” Elena glanced toward Bryon's headless body. "What... what do we do about him?" Evie said, “Oh, yeah... right. Stand back, everyone.” Then, with a flick of her wrist, the body lit up, bursting into flames and then out into nothing but ashes, as the wind blew it up into the breeze; he was gone without a trace. Stefan said, "Remind me to never get on your bad side.” He chuckled as the ashes flew away and scattered into the night sky, dissipating. Stefan let out a low whistle, genuine respect crossed his features as he chuckled darkly. Damon watched the last traces of Bryon disappear into the forest floor before turning back to Evie. Awe and something fiercely protective burned in his eyes. "That was incredible," he said, his voice rough with admiration. He moved to her side, his hand settling instinctively against the small of her back. Elena stepped forward hesitantly, her eyes drifting toward the bloodstained ground. She swallowed before speaking. "We should probably... not mention this to Caroline. She worries enough as it is." Stefan nodded in agreement, as he moved toward the forest path. Taking Elena’s hand, he said, "The cabin has everything you need. We keep it stocked as a safe house. We’ll meet you both at Bonnie’s at dawn. Until then, keep her safe, brother." "Very well, good night, and thank you both again," Evie said apologetically Stefan patted Damon on the back as they walked away into the forest night, leaving the way they came. Evie started walking toward her bike, as Damon asked, "Am I riding b***h, or do you wanna race?” Damon’s grin was palpable as she approached the Kawasaki; the moonlight caught the chrome as Damon leaned against the bike, "I’m serious.” “You’ve got the magic, the power, the whole dangerous vibe going.” “But can you ride?” His voice was that of a tease, with a goading smile upon his face. He ran his hand along the seat with deliberate slowness, his dark eyes locked on hers with that familiar teasing intensity. “Because if you can’t, I’m driving, and trust me, you’ll want to feel what this bike can do in my hands.” He said, cocky as he always was. Stefan and Elena faded into the darkness, headed back toward town, leaving her and Damon alone with the forest and the rumble of the engine that Evie just started as she looked over at him she winked and says “Hop on. You're driving, for I don’t know where I’m going, and I think there’s been enough danger for one night, and I would really like having your body close to mine right about now.” Damon’s teasing expression melted into something deeper, more genuine. He moved closer, his hand reached for the handlebars as he slung his leg over the seat, his voice in a low and rough tone, whispered into Evie’s ear. "Now that’s the best offer I’ve heard all night.” She settled behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist as she leaned into him. For the first time in twenty years, she allowed someone else to take the lead. The weight she'd carried alone for so long no longer rested solely on her shoulders. The leather was warm and comfortably familiar, a small comfort in the chaos of the night. "Hang on-tight-to-me, darling. I’ve got you.” He said reassuringly; his voice carried that familiar intensity, but there was something protective underneath it now. He started to pull out of the campsite. The engine engaged and sent a rumbling vibration through them both as they pulled out into the unknown night.
