The Bitter Pill
The luminous sun cast its rosy hues across the bright morning sky with its rays seeping through the silky curtains of her Josephine's room. Its rays charged directly at her face, it breached her lids as it stung her eyeballs. “Ugh” Josephine yawned disoriented wincing at the pain of sleeping on her right hand. She perused her temple lazily she grimaced pressing her brows against together. Her lustrous black lashes raised up rapidly just to reveal her oceanic blue eyes as another yawn escaped her lips. She flinched the duvet over her head, trying to suppress the urge to get up from bed. Not being able to fight the urge, she pulled off the duvet from her body. Josephine alighted the bed and glided towards the bathroom door which was just some steps away from where her bed was situated. She clasped the door knob in her grip and twisted it gently as the door opened, and she walked in locking the door behind her as her gaze roved the interior decor of her bathroom. The bathtub sat at the vast end of the bathroom, her lids flickered as she flinched her gaze at the row of furry robes which were showcased at a side, hanging atop a golden pole. Swiftly, she traced a hand down to her gown's zipper and drove it down as her dress pooled down to get knees. As she walked towards the sink at a side, a huge mirror hanging above it with its reflection as sharp as razor, she glided with her hips swaying elegantly. As she arrived at the sink, a smile cast on her lips as she stared deep into the mirror as she said “now let's get this over with ”. *** Josephine glided out of the bathroom in a white furry robe, her long raven black hair flowed down to her hips in a wet cascade, she made her way towards the dressing room. Her hands gripped the knob as she twisted the brass door knob of her dressing room as the door opened creaking loudly. She made her way in and stretched her hands and picked her work clothes placing them on a table not to far from her. The dressing room wasn't elegantly heaped with clothes it contained a few clothes of hers of which were hanged on the rack. She sighed as she picked up the clothes she'd chosen, her hands trailed on her wooden shoe rack as she picked her heels taking it alongside with her work clothes. *** She walked out of the dressing room dressed in a blue female suit with her hair braided in a messy bun, her pink chapped lips equally oiled with lip gloss. She strides towards the door gripping her purse in her hands as she headed close to the door. With the grace of a peacock, she neared the door with a deepened smile on her face, her expression turned gloom the instant she'd woken up. Her peep-toe heels made a confident set of rhythmic sounds with emphasis laid on each step she took. She halted, clasping the knob of her door in a slight grip, she twisted it gently wiping some clouds of sweats from her forehead. Josephine cat walked out of her apartment swerving her hips as she walked, a smile shrouded on her lips as she neared the elevator. She stretched a finger and tapped on a button as the elevator door chimed open, and she walked gracefully with her shoulders held up high. Immediately, the elevator door chimed close as Josephine anticipated patiently for the ride to come to an end. The chiming sound of the elevator door rang out with Josephine walking out of the elevator. She gracefully walked to the receptionists office and said placing her keys on the counter. “Here's my keys” she said with a smile crested on her lips as she turned back and walked for the glass door. *** The early morning sun was stunning, it set the crayons walls of the apartment ablaze in golds and reds. “Oh, you stupid car you never work when I need you to” Josephine sighed hitting the burnet of her car fuming with anger. The last thing she'd wanted was to get delayed by her car, with a little hint of hope, she walked back into the car and turned it on as it miraculously worked. Her car made a roaring sound as it turned on with Josephine yelling for joy as she drove out of the parking lot. “Well, faith could really move mountains” She chuckled slowly as she continued driving. She anchored the wheels of her car as the car zoomed out of the parking lot towards the huge gate which opened automatically. The drive was rather silent and calm, only the regular honking of cars as they all were queued in heavy traffic. “I should visit mom” She said to no one in particular as she heaved out a sigh wiping some clouds of glistening sweats from her forehead as she settled on the steering wheels of her car. She anchored the wheels veering it in a direction as her car reversed driving into a path one more free than the one that led to her work place. The car drove for some minutes before it paused with Josephine hitting her hands on the steering wheel as the horn blazed at the huge 24-foot bronze gate of the New York City hospital. The gate chimed open as her car zoomed in veering the steering wheel at a direction as the car turned in the direction of parking lot. Her legs pressed on the brakes of her car as the car parked with the driver's seat door chiming open as she stepped out shutting it behind her. She strolled with her hips swerving sideways elegantly as she made her way towards the glass door of the hospital. She walked over the terrace as her hands clutched the door handle of the huge glass door of the hospital as she pushed it with a little push. Furthermore, she headed straight into the hallway of wards when a voice called out her name “Um... Ms. Josephine Mac”. “Yeah” Her reply was curt as she flinched her body in the direction of where the voice came from. Her gaze landed on the receptionist who was a petite blonde lady with deep black eyes, she had a thin figure with a bright smile plastered on her lips. “ The doctor requested for your presence in her office” she prodded “She'd been trying to get in touch with you, but you weren't replying to our E-mails”. “ Ooh” Josephine said as she glided towards the elevator door which sat at the extreme end just some steps away from her. She tapped on a button as the elevator door chimed open as she walked in escorted by the chiming sounds of the closing elevator door. She stood waiting for the ride to come to a halt, it didn't take long before the elevator door chimed open, and she rushed out. Likewise, she tried to run but couldn't with her heels as she made her way towards the doctor's office door and walked. The atmosphere was cool and silent seemed to have engulfed the atmosphere as she stared into the face of the doctor. “Sit” The doctor ordered as she sat down on the high neck swivel chair opposite the doctor's. “What's wrong with my mom doc tell me” The words blasted out of her lips in haste as her expression turned more gloom than it already was. “You're going to have to be strong to hear this" Doctor Margaret said and sighed adding more Samantha's suspense. “Tell me doc" Josephine's voice came out weak and wobbly as her heart began thumping vehemently in her chest, her fears heightened to the brim. “She has third stage cancer of the blood and am sorry this hospital is equipped and even though, it's going to cost a huge amount of money” Doctor Margaret said. "Oh, how much? I'll do anything for my mom to walk out of this hospital be Hale and healthy" Sam sighed. "It's approximately $10,000 for all the needed treatment" Doctor Margaret's voice echoed in Samantha's ears. Josephine's blue eyes widened in shock as her blood froze in her veins at the mention of $10, 000. Where was she going to get it from? She ran her hands softly through her long raven black hair in awe and despair as her heart sank deep into her ocean of blood. "No matter the cost I'll try my best "She said in a beseeching tone exhaling deeply as she stood up from the chair she sat on and strides out of the doctor's office. Josephine leapt out of the doctor's office with her face already a mask of despair, she sighed sinking deep into her train of thoughts, she leapt deeper into the hallway as her mind was bombarded with questions. “ Where would she find that amount of money??”. “ Would she lose her mom?? ” As she walked deeper into the hallway, these questions filled her head as she got closer and closer to the elevator door which was now a step away from where she stood. Her fingers trailed on the button as one the elevator door chimed open as she walked in it, she stood and waited for the elevator ride to come to a halt. Not quite long, the elevator door chimed open, and she walked out of the elevator. The door automatically closed behind her. She strode into the hallways of the 15th floor of the hospital as she turned facing the door to a ward. She halted, staring deep into the circular glass design on the ward's door, her heart ached as tears welled up in her eyes, she fought back the tears, but they proved just to be too strong to restrain as they cascaded down her face as she sobbed silently. In the room, on the hospital bed, staring up at the ceiling with plastic tiny tubes channeled into her, a life support machine by her side was her mother. From the view, she could tell her mother was taking her daily dose of her recommended drugs. She sighed summoning up some courage as she wiped her tears as she whispered to herself,“ I have to stay strong for mom ”. She twisted the knob as the door made a low screech alarming the occupants of the room, she watched as her mom's head turned slightly in her direction. “Dear, you're here" Her mom called out in a low pale voice. Her face was plain, it had been long since she'd seen her mom without makeup ever since she was born she'd known her mother as a fierce and mighty lady, a fashionista who wouldn't stop at nothing look gorgeous. And now. That same mighty lady was lying on a hospital bed battling for her life. “She has to take her pills and have some rest, but you can talk to her for some minutes” The nurse said as she walked out of the room leading only Josephine and her mother. The room was calm and peaceful, silence engulfed the atmosphere as Josephine took a step closer to her mom's hospital bed. She stared down at her sick mother, she had freckles littered on her diamond shaped face as her weak lids raised staring at her. “Josie” Her mother called her by her nickname as her chin rose lightly as a smile spreader on her cheeks as her mother's fidgety hand raised as it carried her face, her mom smiled broadly as the edges of her lips deepened. “Yes mom” She responded curtly as tears welled up in her eyes, she fought them back. “I missed you, I miss living in our apartment, I miss cooking your meals, I miss...” Mrs Mac said in a low tone that could be taken as a whisper as Josephine's voice interrupted cutting her halfway in her speech. “ Don't worry mom, it's all going to be fine and if you keep responding to your treatment, you'll be out of her in a few months” She assured. Deep down, she was in awe and the assurance she gave her mom wasn't what she felt deep within her, deep down she knew everything wasn't going to be alright they'd remain like this until God-knows-when they're crisis would come to an end. The Ward's door opened with the usual screech from the door as the nurse walked into the room. “She needs to have some rest” The nurse said facing Josephine as she strolled out of the room heading towards the elevator that was at the other end of the hallway. She strolled towards the elevator as she took another step tapping on a button on the elevator as its door chimed open. *** Josephine walked out of the elevator door headed directly for the glass door of the hospital, she pulled it tightly as she strides out of the hospital in the direction of the parking lot. She dipped a hand in her purse and brought out her car keys as she tapped on a button as the car's hunk blazed in response. She opened the driver's seat wiping a cloud of glistening sweats from her forehead as she said to herself,“ Now back to the office”......
