CHAPTER 4

1530 Words
The night was thick with the scent of pine and the coolness of a building breeze as Aurora stood at the edge of the clearing, her heart still racing from the trials she had just completed. Her spirit burned with rebellion, but her muscles hurt. She was too far gone to turn back now. The forest's shadows encircled her, and the distant wolves' gentle howls only made her sensation of loneliness worse. She was battling for her life, not just for the crown. Yet, something gnawed at the back of her mind—Kael’s warnings about Marcus and Darius. How long had Marcus been plotting against her family? And why hadn’t she seen it sooner? Aurora scanned the treeline, her eyes searching for Kael. As he frequently did, he had vanished once more, vanishing into the darkness as though he belonged more to the night than to the world she lived in. A surge of annoyance erupted within her. He saved her, protected her, but he was always so distant, so secretive. Who was he really? And why had he chosen to help her? The gentle rustle of leaves behind her broke her reverie. Her senses alert, she whirled around and reached reflexively for the dagger fastened to her belt. "You're getting better at sensing danger," said Kael in a low, gravelly voice as he appeared out of the shadows, his towering figure blending in with the trees' shadows. His eyes met hers, glimmering dimly in the moonlight. "But you're still too trusting." His remarks caused Aurora's heart to race, but she wasn't sure if it was due to fear or anything else. "Is that why you keep disappearing? Testing me?" Kael’s lips curved into a half-smile, but there was no warmth in it. "You’ve already passed the test, Aurora. You survived the first trial, and that’s more than most expected. But this is just the beginning. The real danger is closer than you think." His cryptic words only added to her unease. She crossed her arms, unwilling to let him see the vulnerability that simmered beneath her surface. "You mentioned Marcus before. What do you know about him? If he’s betrayed my family, I need to know everything." Kael’s expression darkened. "Marcus has been working with Darius for longer than you realize. He’s been feeding him information, manipulating events from the inside. Although he is aware that he cannot do it alone, Darius still aspires to rule the throne. That’s why he’s been aligning himself with powerful players like Marcus." Aurora's breath was taken away when the truth struck her like a strike to the chest. All along, Marcus, the man who had supported her father for years and served as her advisor upon his passing, had been working against her. She felt a mixture of anger and betrayal upon realising this, but beneath it all was a sense of remorse. What caused her to be so blind? Aurora responded, "I trusted him," in an emotionally charged voice. "He has spent years with my family. I thought he was loyal." "Loyalty is a fickle thing in this kingdom," Kael replied, stepping closer to her, his eyes never leaving hers. "And power corrupts even the most loyal of men. Marcus took advantage of a chance to advance beyond his level.” Aurora's nails were digging into her palms as her hands balled into fists. She hadn't recognised the true dangers inside her own pack because she had been so preoccupied with establishing herself as an Alpha. It nearly cost her everything because she had been naïve. Her voice was hardly more than a whisper when she questioned, "What do we do now?" She felt small and overwhelmed by the situation's weight pressing down on her. Kael’s gaze softened for a moment, a rare glimpse of something more human beneath his hardened exterior. "You need to be careful, Aurora. Marcus, the Elders, and most definitely Darius are not the people you can trust at this time. You are the only person you can trust.” "And you?" Aurora asked, her heart pounding as she met his gaze. "Can I trust you?" Kael remained silent for a minute; his face unreadable. There was a long, heavy stillness between them before he eventually said something. "I have repeatedly saved your life. That should be answer enough." Though she still harboured doubts, Aurora wanted to believe him. Kael had his own goal and was an outcast, a renegade. Despite the fact that his intentions were hidden, there was something about him that drew her in and made her want to trust him. The tension between them was broken before she could press any farther by a howl that reverberated through the night. Kael's body tensed as his head snapped towards the sound. His voice was anxious as he stated, "We're running out of time." "Darius won’t wait long. He’ll strike when you least expect it. You need to stay ahead of him." Aurora swallowed the fear that threatened to rise in her throat. "And Marcus? If he’s working with Darius, he’ll be a threat inside the castle." Kael nodded. "We’ll deal with Marcus. But first, you need to focus on the next trial. It’s your only chance to build alliances and prove your strength. Without support, you’ll never make it to the final challenge." The next trial. Aurora had almost forgotten about it in the chaos of everything else in addition to physical prowess, the Rite of Succession was intended to assess leadership, strategy, and the capacity to command the respect of the packs. Surviving the trials was not enough; she had to win them, and gaining the support of her followers was necessary to do so. "I’ll win," she declared, more to herself than to Kael. "I have to." Kael stepped closer, his presence overwhelming in the stillness of the night. "Winning isn’t just about strength, Aurora. It’s about understanding the game. You need to be smarter than your enemies. You need to anticipate their moves before they make them." His closeness caused Aurora's heart rate to increase, and his intense stare made it difficult to think. There was no time to ask him additional questions or delve into the mysteries he protected so carefully. Darius was out there, planning her demise, and the trials were approaching. For a brief instant, Kael's gaze softened as though he could feel the strain of her load. "Aurora, you underestimate your strength. Don't show them how afraid you are.” Then he was gone, vanishing as quickly as he had appeared, back into the darkness. For a minute, Aurora stood there with her mind racing in a thousand different directions. She was troubled by Marcus's betrayal, Darius's threat, and Kael's mystery, but she couldn't afford to think about it right now. The Rite of Succession waited for no one, and the next trial was fast approaching. The second attempt took place well into the forest, where the old, tall trees made a natural canopy that blocked out the moonlight with their interlacing branches. The only sound to disturb the silence was the occasional snap of a twig beneath the feet, and the air was heavy with the smell of moss and moist ground. With her heart pounding in her chest, Aurora stood at the edge of the meadow, preparing herself for what lay ahead. The Trial of Strength, which assessed not only physical strength but also courage and perseverance, was the most dangerous of the challenges. Many had fallen in earlier Rites, and it was a cruel, merciless test. She glanced around at the other competitors—strong, battle-hardened Alphas from rival packs, each one looking at her as though she were prey. Among them, Darius stood with a cocky, self-assured look, as though he had already won. The sight of him made Aurora's blood boil, but she made herself remain composed. She was unable to show him how angry she was. The Elders signalled to start; their features obscured by darkness. The contestants rushed forward without hesitation, their bodies crashing into one another in a frantic tangle of teeth and claws. Aurora launched herself into the battle, avoiding attacks and retaliating with quick, well-timed blows. Although she was not the strongest, she moved quickly and deftly, navigating the mob with accuracy. But Darius was waiting for her. Moving with deadly elegance, he closed the gap between them, his gaze fixed on her. Knowing that this was the moment he had been anticipating, Aurora prepared herself. "Still think you can win this, princess?" With a tone full of disdain, Darius sneered. Aurora didn’t answer. Rather, her claws were pointed at his throat as she pounced at him. Darius, however, was quicker and avoided her blow, driving her with bone-crushing force into the ground. Aurora was in excruciating pain, but she resisted. She scurried to her feet, prepared to confront him once more, but before she could do so, a hand seized her arm and pulled her away. Kael. "Not yet," he said, warning flashes in his eyes. Aurora wanted to argue, but there was no time. Darius was closing in again, his eyes burning with fury.
