Chapter 1:The offer of blood
CHAPTER 1: The Offer of Blood
Dawn came with the sound of chains.
Seo-ah woke on the cold floor of the prison carriage. Her wrists were bound in iron, and the weight of them had bruised her skin purple. Outside, the Joseon drums beat. Inside, her father’s voice echoed.
"You will marry the Northern King," he had said last night. "Or 10,000 of our people will die by winter."
An offer. A threat. A crown bought with blood.
The carriage door opened. Snow blew in.
"Princess," a guard said. "We’ve arrived."
The Northern Palace was nothing like Joseon. No gold. No silk. Just black stone, high walls, and wolves carved into every gate. This was the kingdom her people called monsters.
They dragged her to the throne room.
He was waiting.
King Kadir.
No crown. Just a black circlet and a sword across his knees. Twenty years old. Eyes like winter.
"So this is the price of peace," he said. His voice was low. "A princess in chains."
Seo-ah forced herself to stand straight despite the iron on her wrists.
"I am not a price," she said. "I am Joseon."
Kadir studied her. "My advisors said to execute you at the border. Send your head back to your father."
"But you didn’t."
"No," he said. "Because dead princesses don’t stop wars. Married ones do."
He stood. Walked to her. The guards tensed.
He lifted her chains. Looked at the bruises.
"Take them off," he ordered.
A servant rushed forward with a key.
The iron fell. Her hands shook.
"Do you know why your father sent you?" Kadir asked.
"To stop the war."
"To spy," he corrected. "To poison me. To run."
Seo-ah met his eyes. "Would it work?"
Kadir almost smiled. "No."
He held out his hand. "The treaty is signed with blood, Princess Seo-ah. Today, we seal it with marriage. You will wear my name. You will sleep in my palace. And if your father breaks the treaty, I will know it’s your fault."
"And if you break it?" she asked.
"Then you can kill me in my sleep."
The court laughed. Kadir didn’t.
The ceremony was brutal and fast. No music. No flowers. Just vows spoken in two languages, and a ring of black iron slid onto her finger.
A chain, in a different form.
That night, she was taken to her room. Silk sheets. A locked door.
A single message on the pillow:
Welcome to the North, Wife.
Seo-ah lay awake, listening to the wolves outside.
She was a prisoner.
She was a queen.
She was the only thing standing between two kingdoms and war.
And somewhere in Joseon, her brother Minho was planning how to get her back.
