CHAPTER 8: Day 4
They came on day 4.
Just like Seo-ah said.
Horns. A thousand of them.
Joseon banners on the horizon. Black and gold.
Minho led them.
On a white horse. Armor shining. Sword drawn.
Kadir stood on the wall. No crown. Just black armor.
Beside him, Seo-ah. Bow in hand.
"Open the gates," Minho shouted. "Or I burn it down."
"And kill your sister?" Kadir called back.
"If I have to," Minho said. His eyes found Seo-ah. "Come home."
Seo-ah stepped to the edge.
"Minho," she called. "I am home."
The army murmured.
Minho's face broke. "You're brainwashed."
"No," she said. "I'm in love."
An arrow flew.
It missed Kadir by an inch.
"THAT'S IT!" Minho roared. "ATTACK!"
The siege began.
Ladders. Rams. Fire.
Kadir fought in the front. No crown. No throne. Just a king with a sword.
Seo-ah fought beside him. Arrow after arrow.
"Fall back!" Kadir ordered. "To the inner wall!"
They retreated, bleeding.
In the courtyard, surrounded, Kadir grabbed Seo-ah's hand.
"If we die today," he said, "I need you to know..."
"Don't," Seo-ah cut him off. "We're not dying."
She lifted her bow. Aimed at the gate.
And shot.
The rope holding the portcullis snapped.
The inner gate CRASHED down, trapping half of Minho's army outside.
Silence.
Minho stared from the other side.
"You're good," he said to Seo-ah. "Too good."
He raised his sword. "One last time. Come with me."
Seo-ah looked at Kadir. At his bloodied hand. At the oath scar on his palm.
Then she raised her bow at her brother.
"No," she said.
Minho lowered his sword. "Then I guess we do this the hard way."
The drums started again.
