I strolled around the garden of the mansion. It’s been a month since the incident. I have isolated myself from everyone, especially Christiana. I admitted I was wrong and I healed the poor dog. But the events will be a constant reminder of how stubborn and childish I am. I have never changed after all.
I am still the ignorant Eloise of Paredes. Nothing changed and that itself is a pill hard to swallow. I have longed for myself to be more likable to everyone. I have dreamed to be less different and just dumping my immature personality. But what can I say? When I thought I am a changed woman and Angel that’s when I realize I am still the same.
The mean.
Immature.
Childish.
Stubborn.
I sighed as I sat on the rock just in front of the garden. For the past month, a lot has changed. Since we’re free to go around Athanatoss now, Christiana had made some upgrades to the mansion. It looks livelier now. And now that I can finally be free from this wretched mansion, I have stuck myself in this old house.
How ironic.
I also just discovered the wolf I’ll be working on. It even depressed me more that I denied all the offers Christiana gave me. She offered us to study here since it is more accessible for us to do our mission but I declined it. The simple thought of who I am going to write a destiny for made me feel worse. So, as a result, I am currently alone in this big mansion while they do their mission. How great!
It’s even more ironic and ridiculous that I have lost all of my energy to do my mission now that I found out who I am going to write a destiny for. My original plan was to immediately start the task so that I can finally get out of this hell hole but I guess I’m just wrong. Stupid!
School in this world just started two weeks ago. Good for them. I’ll just wait when I fully adjust to this world and… reality.
Around six in the evening, they finally came back. I could hear their laughter from the distance. Looks like they enjoyed the world out there. I pouted when they started laughing again. I noticed Mark looked dirty with all the dirt on his white shirt. I narrowed my eyes on them until they noticed me.
Sham noticed me first. I raised my eyebrow when she giggled and went to me for a tight hug. She always does this.
“Guess what, Nav?” her voice full of excitement.
I rolled my eyes realizing she’s full of sweat. This disgusting woman!
“What?” trying to sound uninterested.
She made some mini jumps and pulled me inside the mansion as she giggled.
“We played tag with the wolves department! It’s so much fun! They’re really aggressive but they’re actually nice, you know,”
“Again?”
Just two days ago, these were exactly the same words she said to me. She must have really enjoyed their company there. I shrugged thoughts out of my mind and also shrugged Shams’ arms around my other arm.
“They’re so hard to beat but I won’t deny that they’re quite the catch,” Sham and Jedi all looked red.
It even disgusted me more. They are here for a mission yet their eyes are set for the boys! They even have time to flirt. I shook my head. My thoughts then wandered. I furrowed my brows remembering something.
I cleared my throat which caught their attention.
“You know our rules and laws. We can’t just be reckless in this world,” in my serious tone.
Jedi and Sham pressed their mouths to close after what I said. Mark who was laughing with them immediately hung his expression. I looked at Jedi and Sham intently. Jedi was the first one to avoid my eyes. Sham then fidgeted with her fingers.
“You really have nothing to worry about, Nav. I mean, there’s one in a million chances for us to break the law,” she then gave me her sweet and innocent smile.
I rolled my eyes, getting annoyed out of nowhere.
“I’m not worried,”
I don’t know how to feel. I don’t even know if I am worried. I’m just well aware of our laws that may be punishable by death when not abided by. I looked at them again. Maybe… I am worried. Or just…
My eyes went up to Mark who had this sheepish smile on his face. I just raised him a brow which he responded with a chuckle.
“Nav is right. It may be one in a million, it still can happen. I know you are already familiar with the past generations’ violations which resulted in execution,” Christiana came out of nowhere.
My body immediately responded to her sudden entrance into this conversation. I took a step farther away. Christiana noticed it but I only shrugged.
Everybody eventually zipped their mouth after what Christiana said. Though, it is true. I am well-fed with the history of my ancestors. The generations before me. Exactly three generations ago, an Acadian was executed due to a violation of a certain law. No one could forget it. So, as a result, it was written all over our books.
Though, there was a tragic story behind the execution. And even if it is a one in a million chance for it to happen, there’s still the possibility. The chance can be that one. It’s a scary history. And a scary story.
We proceeded with dinner. Everyone was quiet, not the usual dinner I got used to. They were normally loud at the table and sometimes full of laughter. Maybe that ‘topic’ is still a taboo subject in our world. No one would dare to talk about it. Even after three generations, it felt like nothing changed.
Our professors used to tell us that tragic story. How our world, Paredes, almost was torn apart just because of a single violation made by an Acadian. They still sent us here to Athanatoss until now even after the incident. Maybe they want to forget about it or it’s just really a sensitive topic.
The usual talkative Sham couldn’t shut her mouth. I don’t know if she’s simply curious or just stupid. I want to shake my head in so much disapproval but… I am also curious. There wasn’t really enough information given to us about that incident before. Only some important facts. The books weren’t really making it in too much detail.
Maybe, it was just a story with so much disgrace to the goddess, our creator.
“Christiana…” Sham trailed off.
Jedi eyed her, signaling to stop whatever dumb thing she’s going to do.
“Hmm?” Christiana responded while still fixated on her dinner.
“Uh, you’re an Acadian Mentor for four generations, right?”
Christiana halted from slicing the stake. She stopped chewing and all her attention is now dazed to Sham. I just stayed quiet and listened. The topic is actually interesting. It’s a taboo topic so why not discuss it here? Besides, we’re not in Paredes anyways.
Christiana swallowed hard. She put her utensils down and wiped her mouth with the tissue. She looks pale, tsk.
“Yes,” she said almost in a whisper.
Sham’s eyes wandered to us. She then shifted from her seat and swallowed slowly. She’s intrigued. Well, I’m sure all of us here are.
“Did you witness it? Did you see how the Angel was killed?”
Christiana’s fierce eyes pierced into Sham. But Sham couldn’t care less. Even if I was in Sham’s position, I would not care, too. I want an answer.
I’m intrigued.
Christiana sighed heavily and just avoided Shams’ eyes.
“I saw them executed, yes,” in her calm tone.
I furrowed my brows. Sham who was already expecting the same answer was jaw dropped.
“Them?” I asked as I sipped on my glass of water.
“The couple died,”
To be continued…
