SELINA’S POV
After my second match, I could hear the students whispering about me. They were wondering why I still hadn’t shifted even though there were times when I struggled to keep up with the strength of their wolves.
I wiped the blood from my arm after the scratches I had received from my second match had already healed. He was good too, and I had to admit that I struggled against him. What about my next matches?
I didn’t know if I could still handle the next ones. As long as I could still fight, I would keep fighting.
“Selina,” I looked at Mom when I heard her voice.
“Selina, sweetheart!” she exclaimed happily before hugging me. “You did so well, honey.” She praised me before looking at me. Dad was also looking at us, smiling.
“How are you feeling? Are you okay? Where are your wounds?” she asked while checking my entire body.
“They’re all gone? How did that happen? Did a healer already treat you?” she asked in confusion.
“Don’t think about that anymore, what matters is that she’s okay and her wounds are healed. You really did a great job there, Selina. I was also surprised by how good you were at fighting. Tell me, have you been training on your own?” Dad asked curiously. I gave him a small smile.
“I needed to train, Dad. If I don’t have a wolf and I’m weak on top of that, how am I supposed to survive in this world?” He nodded repeatedly.
“That’s right, you really impressed me with your fighting skills.”
“By the way, have you seen Ellaine?” I changed the subject because she might get jealous again if she saw us together.
“Yes, she was with us earlier but she suddenly left. Ellaine is already in the top 30. I want you to do your best too, not so you can make it to the top 10 but so they won’t be able to kill you, okay? I want you to come home to us alive. If you manage to make it to the top 10 of Shadowfang Pack, I’ll be the proudest father for both you and Ellaine.” I smiled at what Dad said.
They both hugged me and it felt like all the exhaustion I was feeling disappeared. I was so lucky because they were the ones who found me, they were the ones who took care of me, raised me, and loved me.
“Thank you so much for all the sacrifices you’ve made for me, especially for your unconditional love. You have no idea how happy I am that you stepped up as my parents.” I said emotionally.
They pulled away from the hug and looked at me.
“Aren’t you interested in finding out who your biological parents are? Do you want us to help you find them? We’re only waiting for you to tell us that you want to find and meet them.” Dad said, but I shook my head. What was the point of looking for them? Yes, I had a lot of questions about my identity but if they had abandoned me back then, there was no reason for me to look for them anymore.
“There’s no need, Dad. I’m already happy that you became my parents. I don’t have anything I want to tell them. I also don’t want to know why they abandoned me and left me all alone.”
“Are you sure?” I nodded at Mom. I will acknowledge only one father and mother, and they are the ones who adopted me.
We went home after that long day. I didn’t know where Ellaine was, but I didn’t bother asking my parents about her. I was already lying on my bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
I couldn’t help but wonder, was I really just an ordinary person? Many people were asking what family I came from because of my extraordinary strength.
Am I a werewolf or am I a Lycan? What if Ellaine was right? What if I was one of the monsters hated by the werewolves? If I really was a Lycan, then maybe it would be better if I never shifted and just remained like this.
The Lycans wanted to conquer all of us. If they couldn’t force us to obey them, they wanted to wipe out our entire race. As far as I knew, all the wolf territories had been sealed so the Lycans wouldn’t be able to find us, but we wouldn’t be able to hide from them forever.
We didn’t know why they hated us so much.
Thousands of years had passed since the werewolves and Lycans became mortal enemies. Based on the stories I had heard, the Luna killed her own husband, the Lycan King. The werewolves and Lycans began fighting until their conflict eventually turned into a war.
The future Lycan King, the son of the former Luna and Lycan King, was under the care of the Luna’s parents at that time when he suddenly died, which made the Lycans even angrier because he was the only child of the former Lycan King. They said that the future Lycan King suddenly died for an unexplained reason, but the Lycans believed that he was deliberately killed because he had inherited his father’s Lycan blood. And until now, the conflict between werewolves and Lycans still hasn’t ended.
If the Lycans found us, the endless battle would surely begin again. The Lycans were too strong and too powerful, and if we chose to fight them, we would surely be wiped out. The rest of the story, I didn’t know anymore.
With all the thoughts running through my mind, I didn’t even realize that I had already fallen asleep.
The next morning, I could hear Mom and Dad happily talking about Ellaine’s ranking.
“If you make it to the top 10, you’ll be able to study at Lunaris, and we’ll be happy for you.” Mom said.
“Of course, Mom, I won’t embarrass our family. I’ll make sure you’ll be proud of me. All of Dad’s teachings will be worth it.”
“I’m glad you were able to apply everything you’ve learned.” Dad said happily as well. I didn’t enter the kitchen right away, I let their family have their moment. I didn’t want Ellaine to think that I was forcing myself into their family again.
The three of them hugged each other because if Ellaine won one more match, she would surely make it into the top 10. It was also almost time for them to announce the ten students who would be chosen from each pack.
When I was sure that they were done with their family time, I finally entered.
“Oh, Selina. You’re here. You and Ellaine should eat so you’ll have enough strength for your matches later. Do your best again in your match, okay?” Mom said before giving me a plate and serving me some food.
I looked at Ellaine, but she only rolled her eyes again.
“You know, Selina. You can still withdraw. Winning twice is already enough, you’ll still be able to study this year anyway. Why don’t you just withdraw so you won’t get hurt anymore or, worse, get killed by whoever you’re going to fight?” Ellaine said as she sliced the meat on her plate.
“That’s not possible, Ellaine. She still has to fight because you can’t withdraw from the Mooncrest Trial. The Mooncrest Trial held every year is also training for all of you while you’re still students. When you’re in a real battle, you can’t just back out when you get scared. Whether you live or die, you have to fight. Fleeing a fight is cowardly.” Dad said as he gave Ellaine and me some of the meat he had sliced.
“Whatever,” that was all Ellaine said before she looked at me and smirked. I could only raise an eyebrow at her. What was she planning this time?
