Chapter 27

SELINA’S POV “Selina, that’s enough!” I heard dad shout. I knew he was already afraid of what might happen to me, but I couldn’t back down. My opponent and I stood up at the same time and looked at each other. She grinned at me even though we were both already gasping for breath from our fight. “I've had enough.” She said before her body was quickly covered with thick fur. She immediately charged at me, and I could barely see her because of how fast she moved. “Ah,” I groaned when her sharp claws struck my back. I ran a few steps, not to escape but to put some distance between us. I turned to face her and was surprised when she suddenly charged at me again, but I slid underneath her. I managed to grab both of her legs, causing us both to fall. I didn’t let go of her legs. I twisted around, making her howl as her legs were twisted. She stood up and quickly ran, dragging me along because I was still holding onto her legs. I almost ate dirt because of it. Even though I didn’t have a wolf, I bit one of her legs with all my strength, causing her to kick me in the face. I spat out the blood I tasted from her. She didn’t stop charging at me. Instead of charging back at her, I ran away from her. The spectators started whispering because of what I was doing. Some of them even laughed because they thought I was about to run away. Before I reached the wall, I jumped high onto it. My opponent continued running straight toward me. I landed behind my opponent. I grabbed her by the neck. She quickly ran and jumped around, trying to make me let go of her. I clung to her neck and wrapped my legs around her front legs, causing her to stumble and sending both of us crashing to the ground, but I didn’t waste any time. I locked both my legs around her neck and gathered all my strength before striking her side with my elbow. She howled throughout the entire arena from the pain she suffered. I already had several scratches from her claws, but I didn’t give up. I could already taste my own blood. While she was growing weaker, I jumped and prepared my elbow again before bringing it down against her neck, making her even weaker. She could no longer stand, and I also struggled to get back on my feet. Even though I was already exhausted, I forced myself to stand while we waited to see if my opponent could still get up. The entire arena was silent, waiting to see if my opponent would be able to stand again. I was gasping for breath, and if she managed to get back on her feet, I didn’t know if I could still fight her. My wounds and the scratches from her claws were already burning. “The winner is... Selina Montecarlos of Shadowfang Pack!” The announcement of my victory echoed through the arena. No one said a word, as if they couldn’t believe that I had made it this far. Even I couldn’t believe that I had managed to defeat them. When my victory was announced, I forced myself to walk out of the arena, and before I could completely collapse, a pair of arms caught me. I saw Damien staring at me seriously. I didn’t know if what I saw in his eyes was concern. “You did a great job.” He praised me, but darkness was already beginning to cloud my vision. Before I could completely lose consciousness, Maxwell took me from Damien and carried me like a bride. I didn’t know what happened next as darkness completely swallowed me. --- Slowly, I opened my eyes. The first thing that greeted me was a white ceiling and silence. “Selina, sweetheart, how are you feeling?” I looked to my side and saw mommy and daddy, both worried about me. I sat up, and daddy helped me. I looked at the two other men standing at the foot of my bed, Maxwell and Damien. What were the two of them doing here? “It’s good that you’re finally awake. We thought you wouldn’t wake up until tomorrow.” Mommy said, her voice still filled with worry. “How many hours have I been asleep, mommy?” I asked her. “You’ve been asleep for six hours, it’s already nighttime and the Mooncrest Trial has also ended. I heard that the one you fought still hasn’t woken up until now. Your name was called earlier among those who made it into the top 20. You only have one more fight, and if you win, you’ll surely make it into Lunaris.” I couldn’t tell whether mom was happy that I had made it into the top 20 or worried because my next opponent would surely be stronger. I looked at Maxwell and Damien. “What are you doing here?” I asked. “Dear, they just arrived too to find out if you were already awake.” Mom answered. I looked directly into Maxwell’s eyes. I could see the concern in his eyes, as if he had been terrified throughout my entire fight. Did he think I wouldn’t make it out alive? “Can I talk to her? I’ll be the one to take her home.” Maxwell asked. They all looked at me. Their eyes seemed to be asking if I would allow it. There was also confusion on their faces as to why Maxwell needed to talk to me. I quietly nodded at my parents. “Are you really sure you’re okay now?” Dad asked to make sure. “Yes, dad, don’t worry.” I answered, making them nod. “Maxwell, I’m leaving our daughter in your care. Just make sure she gets home safely.” Dad reminded him. “Yes, sir, I will.” Maxwell immediately answered. Dad patted me on the shoulder before he and mommy left. I was still in the school clinic. “I’ll leave too. You were amazing earlier, Selina. Everyone is talking about you now because you managed to defeat people who have wolves. Even I can’t believe you still don’t have a wolf despite how strong you are. If your wolf finally appears, I’m sure you’ll be even stronger than what you showed all of us.” Damien said to me with a smile. “Thank you, I guess I was just lucky.” “That’s not luck. You’ve won so many times without a single defeat, that’s not just luck. It means you’re really good.” I could only give him a small smile. “I’ll leave you two alone now.” He said, and I simply nodded. After everyone left, Maxwell approached me and helped me get down. “I can do it,” I said to him. “Do you really not know how to accept help? Do you really think you can handle yourself in every situation?” I looked at him. His brows were furrowed again. I couldn’t tell whether he was angry or worried. “Are you worried about me?” I teased him. He let out an awkward laugh. “You’re going to worry me to death, Selina.” His words made my heart beat faster.
