What the Frig

1419 Words
" What the hell happened?!" Caroline's wide blue eyes hold panic and fear as I step onto the side walk. She has on a hippie dyed scarf wrapped around her head and a simple casual knitted black, long sleeved dress. I am about to lift my hand to indicate to her to lead the way. That I'll tell her all about it when we get in, when I actually look up at the restaurant. No way in hell I'm having greens and natural juice after the day I've had. " Caroline hunny, do we have to eat here?" I try to make my voice sound as soft and caring as possible to not hurt her feelings and choice of food. Cars honk non stop in the back ground and the sidewalk is flooded with people walking back and forth. The extremely green vegetables in an extremely yellowish green broth stares back at me on the poster as people jostle by. There is nothing appealing on the poster. She looks at me with a pout and bats her eyelids. " Pleaseeeeee. I know you hate it but I just want to try it with someone. You know how I feel about dining alone plus I love to eat and have conversations. Please Hails" she begs. " Car I really don't want to eat grass especially after the day I've had." I squint my nose at the place and I can already feel my stomach twist at what it will have to go through. Even my mouth starts to taste bland. Heaven help me. " It's not grass" she defends. " You may enjoy it and become a regular customer" she says enthusiastically, bubbling with excitement. Yeah right. I release a sigh and pedal forward. The things I do for her. I hear her scream in anticipation and I roll my eyes at the fact that people think big sisters have it easy. No they don't, we clearly don't. It will take a week for my system to revert back after this. The restaurant is sustainably designed with various art pieces in brown, yellow and green. The smell travelling around is healthy and very green. It smells like when the lawn has been freshly mowed and I bite my inner cheeks as we have to leave our shoes in a box at the front. " You had to wear the YSL's?" Caroline leans over to whisper at me as the Japanese waiter puts our shoes away. " They are for every occasion and they are shoes. I didn't know there were special grass eating shoes", I whisper back at her as the man smiles brightly and leads us to a large mat in the Centre of the room. Great, from the cover of the newspaper to the floor, I quietly scoff to myself. I am given a glare and I know I just hurt my vegetarian sister's feelings but there is vegan and vegetarian and there is extreme. This is way too extreme. The menu has a variety of green items and I decide on nothing. I am not risking it and today of all days. It's bad enough already being held at gun point and now I'm in this restaurant. For being the trooper she is when Caroline thinks I'm not looking her face looks crestfallen and worried at the menu. I guess she didn't bet on this either. She closes the menu to look me dead in the eye. " I don't think I can eat anything right now until I know how Charles is doing" she licks her lips. Liar. Her little puffy cheeks redden slightly and her eyes dart around the room nervously. She was always a terrible liar. Poor thing. " No he's fine. Just choose something so we can actually test it out. It would really be a waste for us to come all the way down here and you don't even try anything. Just pick something". I nicely goad her on and I know she must be dying on the inside right now. I just hope this makes her think twice of inviting me to another all green extreme eatery. The waiter comes up and I take just water while Caroline orders three dishes with names I can't pronounce but the three pictures look the same to me. They show green leaves immersed in green liquid in small bowls. Another glance around the restaurant as I lean back on the palm of my hands, with my legs tucked beneath me and there aren't many people here. Maybe it was the time of day or the food just wasn't hitting on the vegan/ vegetarian scale. " Hailey!" small fingers snap at me and I shoot Caroline a look. "Charles?" " He's fine, he just had a minor asthma attack because of some ass hole. The doctor is with him and he'll be taking the rest of the week off." Her face scrunches up as she tries to connect the dots so I fill her in. " We went to the new house I bought today over at 85th street and this guy barges in on us with a gun and all. Said he was going to shoot me", I explain to her rolling my eyes. The things on the table topple over and some fall on the mat as she leans all the way over our little table in shock, her hands flashing wildly in excitement. The few people in the restaurant look at us. " What?! Oh my God Hailey! What happened?! And why the frig are we here when all this has happened and why didn't you tell me sooner?! Why are you so calm?! Oh my God?! " She's pushing back her hair ventilating, in complete shock and this is why I didn't tell her. She was creating a scene. " Calm down or I won't tell you anything", I calmly tell her and she knows me well enough to oblige. I sigh deeply as she waits for me to elaborate. This is going to be a long lunch. " I went to check out the place with three guards and Charles." Her face falls immediately into a frown and I know both her and mom are going to be on a saving Hailey crusade by the time I reach back to the apartment. Demanding I take at least ten guards around with me now, which is just ridiculous. " Charles has asthma so of course he stayed behind because the place is dusty. They pulled up on us with five guys. The leader was clearly upset that I had bought the place and he promised to shoot my ass while waving and pointing a gun at me. I was scared as hell" I admit to her. " He practically chased me down to a boarded up room and I just braved up and walked passed him. I thought he would have really killed me. I came outside where they had the guards and Charles all on the ground. One shouted if he should let me go and he yelled back yeah. We left and that's it. Nothing more, nothing less." I was lying. There was plenty more. He had cornered me and called me a w***e and all I wanted to do was taste him. " What the frig!" She screamed and I wished she would just curse and call it a day. Then again, I liked her cute way of cursing. It was her way of not breaking the golden rule while breaking the golden rule. " Hails, what did he look like?" I bite my lip as if I was trying to remember but I remembered him down to every single detail. " He's tall, very tall. He is also muscular, has shoulder length blonde hair, beautiful high cheekbones and a jawline. Not to mention these piercing icy blue eyes. He also has a scar-" " Right underneath his jawline running up to his cheek" she finishes, her eyes wide open and filled with fear. " Yeah, how'd you know?" I ask her curiously, tilting my head to the side. " Hails" she whispers, her voice sounding thin and frail and she looks paper white. I follow her line of sight to see the solid frame in his fitted sleek grey suit and the same piercing blue eyes standing in the doorway staring directly at me with his hands in his pockets. You've got to be f*****g kidding me.
