WHEN I HEARD the clanging sound of keys on the other side of the room, I sprang to my feet before I moved back until I felt the cold wall against my back. I wasn't strong enough for an ambush. If Verik went to get his reinforcements, I was done for. The large windows of the room were bolted tight to make sure that I couldn't escape, which made me wonder if that room was specifically designed for me or if Verik had the bad habit of kidnapping people.
