Chapter five: They

Chapter 5: The Summit Judith's POV Word comes that Franklin is organizing a summit with multiple pack Alphas including Solomon and Desmond, and the official announcement says it is for discussing territory disputes and trade agreements. But Eden warns me in frightened whispers that the real purpose is to auction off the opportunity to bond with me, and my blood runs cold because being sold like property is somehow worse than being kidn*pped. I confront Franklin directly and demand to know if this is true, and his cold expression tells me everything before he says that finding me an appropriate mate in another pack solves multiple problems. I tell him that I will refuse any bond and that my power means I can break whatever arrangement he forces, but Franklin smiles without warmth and reminds me that there are ways to control even powerful wolves. He has been consulting with Nicholas about old magic that can bind a wolf's power, and though it is painful and dangerous, he is willing to use it if I do not cooperate. The threat is clear and I return to my room shaking with rage and fear, trapped between impossible choices. Benjamin confronts his father and I hear their argument through the walls, Benjamin demanding to know how Franklin can treat a pack member like merchandise. Franklin responds that I am not truly pack, that I am an omega with no family and no ties except what he allows, and that the summit will proceed whether Benjamin approves or not. The argument escalates into a challenge, not for Alpha position but for the right to make choices about bonds, and the pack buzzes with shock because a son challenging his father over philosophy rather than power is unprecedented. The challenge fractures the pack along lines that were already forming, with younger wolves and those freed from unwanted bonds rallying behind Benjamin while traditionalists support Franklin's authority. Matthew is caught in the middle trying to broker peace, and Claire tells me privately that the pack has not been this divided since the great war with rogues twenty years ago. I feel guilt crushing me because my existence has caused this chaos, but Eden reminds me fiercely that I am not responsible for a broken system finally being questioned. Desmond from Moonstone Pack arrives early for the summit and requests a private meeting with me, and Franklin allows it because refusing would be politically unwise. Desmond is smooth and charming in ways that Solomon is not, and he offers me a deal where he will provide safe passage to neutral territory in exchange for breaking specific bonds in his rival packs. He presents it as helping me escape while also serving justice, removing cruel Alphas from power by severing their bonds to pack members. The offer tempts me because it represents freedom, but Eden helps me see that accepting makes me exactly the weapon I have been trying to avoid becoming. I ask Desmond how I would know which bonds deserve breaking and which do not, and his smile falters because we both know he would control that decision. I refuse his offer and his charming mask slips, revealing a cold calculation beneath, and he tells me that I will regret choosing Franklin's cage over his generous protection. The threat is implicit but clear, and I add another enemy to my growing list. Solomon arrives with his warriors and the tension in Shadow Ridge territory becomes suffocating as multiple Alphas and their entourages fill the mansion. Benjamin is barred from the summit proceedings by Franklin's direct order, confined to his quarters with Stephen assigned to guard him and prevent interference. I am brought before the assembled Alphas in chains, a degradation meant to demonstrate Franklin's control, and I have never felt more like an object than standing before these powerful males who discuss my future without acknowledging my presence. Franklin invites offers for my hand in a bond, explaining that whichever Alpha can provide the best terms will gain both me and access to my power for their pack's benefit. Solomon offers territory and military alliance, clearly planning to use me to destroy rival bonds and expand his power. Desmond offers wealth and trade agreements, his smile cold as he watches me squirm. Other Alphas make their own bids and I listen to my life being bartered like livestock at market, and something inside me breaks under the weight of being treated as less than a person. The breaking is not psychological but literal as my power responds to rage and desperation in ways it never has before, and I feel it surge through me like a tidal wave that I cannot control. Instead of targeting a single bond I release energy in all directions, and the wave spreads through the mansion severing every forced or unwilling bond within range. The results are immediate and catastrophic as wolves throughout the building cry out in shock and pain or relief as connections snap. Franklin's ancient bond to his dead mate Patricia shatters and he collapses as grief he has been avoiding for years crashes over him, and I see him truly feel her loss for the first time. Matthew's bond to his deceased mate breaks and his eyes widen in shock as he realizes he has been clinging to a ghost, and across the room Claire gasps as she feels the same freedom. Sandra, who came to the summit with her father, sighs with relief as the last threads of expectation around her relationship with me dissolve. Some wolves lose bonds they valued despite how they formed and their grief is real, while others feel liberation from unwanted connections, and the chaos is my fault and my gift. Desmond snarls in rage as several of his political bonds break and his carefully constructed alliance network fractures, while Solomon loses bonds to warriors who accepted his dominance only because pack structure demanded it. The assembled Alphas are in disarray and I stand in the center of destruction terrified of my own power, chains still binding my wrists but my ability to break bonds proven beyond doubt. I did not mean to release this wave but I cannot take it back, and the mansion descends into pandemonium as wolves struggle to understand what has happened. Benjamin breaks free from his confinement and fights through the chaos to reach me, and I expect anger or fear but instead he drops to his knees before me. His voice is steady as he apologizes for every time he refused to hear me, every time he treated me as a prize rather than a person, and he tells me that he will help me escape even if it means facing his father's wrath. The apology is the first time anyone has put my choice above politics or personal desire, and it shakes me almost as much as my power surge. But before we can act, Solomon makes his move and his remaining loyal warriors attack to kidnap me by force. Benjamin leads the defense and fighting erupts through the mansion, and I am faced with a terrible choice as I watch Joy being taken hostage and Eden injured in the battle. I could end this immediately by breaking Solomon's bonds to his warriors, severing their loyalty and leaving them directionless, but doing so would make me the weapon I feared becoming. The power is there and ready, but I think about what Eden said about consent and choice, and I make a decision that changes everything. I approach the warriors holding Joy and offer them a choice out loud, I will break their bonds to Solomon if they want freedom from his brutal leadership but only if they choose it themselves. Several warriors exhausted by Solomon's cruelty accept immediately and the bonds break cleanly without pain, while others refuse and maintain their loyalty, which I respect. The warriors who chose freedom turn on Solomon not from compulsion but genuine choice, and the battle ends with Solomon captured and his remaining followers retreating. I stand in the wrecked summit hall surrounded by the consequences of my power, and I know that nothing will ever be the same for Shadow Ridge Pack or for me. Franklin kneels in his grief and Benjamin stands ready to protect my choices, and I must decide what kind of future I want to build.
