Blurb

Lena Blackwood didn't believe in fated mates or fairy-tale love. But as a skilled warrior in her clan, protecting her people from threats is duty enough, not scouring the world in search of a soulmate. Then, when ancient enemies of her clan, the Ravenshade pack, launch a surprise attack, Lena finds herself trapped in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with their fearless leader, Rowan Ravenshade.

Rowan is everything Lena despises: powerful, arrogant, and the sworn enemy of her clan. The more she clashes with him, the stronger their bond grows. Their bloodlines and duties forbid them from ever falling for one another; Lena and Rowan are torn between duty and undeniable connection. When two worlds combine, they have to make a choice between the love they never wanted and the enemies they've always known.

The Attack
Lena Blackwood swept through the dense forest, her senses on high alert. The night was quiet, too quiet for Lena's taste. Being the Alpha's daughter, Lena took it upon herself to patrol the borders, ensuring the safety of her clan members. Though that night felt different, there was a certain heaviness in the air, making her feel somehow nervous. Suddenly, the faraway sound of howls pierced the silence. Lena stopped in her tracks as the cries grew louder and became frantic. The howls were not those of her familiar pack but of something different; they were full of some inbred aggression. It was then that Lena narrowed her eyes at the realization: they were under attack. Her feet barely touched the ground as she bolted back toward the Blackwood camp. As she neared the area, sounds of the battle broke out: the clanging of metal, snarls, shouts of pain. Her people were fighting for their lives. Lena burst out into the clearing, and her breath hitched at the scene before her: the Ravenshade pack, led by the notorious Rowan Ravenshade himself, had penetrated through their defenses. Her clan was fighting desperately, outnumbered and unprepared for the assault. There wasn't time to think. Lena drew her blade and charged in, dropping an enemy wolf with her point. Her moves turned fluid, precise, honed by years of training. However many she took down, more seemed to come. And then she saw him, Rowan Ravenshade—the enemy Alpha—cutting through her warriors with unmerciful, efficient strokes. Their gazes met across the battlefield, and for a single moment, everything else vanished. There was something in him, something, because her heart fluttered even as she raised her sword. Rowan advanced with deadly intent toward her, and Lena prepared to fight. Metallic and stormy-like, they crashed in, neither giving an inch back. She threw all the strengths against him, but he was her equal in everything. His blows were heavy, accurate, and probing at her boundaries. But as they fought, Lena felt something from him strange and unfamiliar—a pull that went much further than the fight. This was disorienting and made her angry. He was supposed to be her enemy, but it was there in him. Suddenly, disarming her with an agile move, Rowan separated her sword from her hand. He grabbed her by the hand and pulled her closer to him. Lena waited for the blow, but it never came. He hesitated, his eyes locked with hers as though he, too, felt that strange connection between them. The moment broke when one of Lena's warriors gave a piercing yelp. Rowan let her go, canting back so his eyes turned black with something unnameable. He gave a shrill whistle, and his pack turned tail. The Ravenshades dashed out as quickly as they had come, leaving the Blackwood camp in shambles. And Lena just stood there, dumbly, with her heart pounding in her ears as she watched Rowan disappear into the night. The battle was over, but the questions that followed were only starting. Why had Rowan attacked? And why, in the heat of battle, had she felt anything but hatred for him? Even in the painful caring for the injured and mourning for the dead, Lena knew for a surety that nothing would ever be the same again, ever. Lena's chest rose and fell, trying to center her breathing. The camp had, at one time, been a place of safety and order, though now it was nothing short of chaos itself. Blood and smoke permeated the air, and the wails of the wounded was a low drone in her ears. She forced herself to move, to help where she could, but her mind was still awhirl from that encounter with Rowan Ravenshade. She'd heard the stories about him—how he was the ruthless ruler, who would stop at nothing to protect his pack. But seeing him up close, feeling his power, and experiencing that strange connection—it blew her away. She had always thought that the Ravenshades were the enemy, pure and simple. But now, doubt was creeping in, and she hated it. "Lena!" Marcus stood there, blood and dirt spraying his face. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine," she answered him, pretending to be fine, though she couldn't dare share her confusion with him. "How is it out there?" "Pretty bad," Marcus admitted, looking around at the ruin that was becoming of their home. "We lost a lot of good warriors tonight. But at least they pulled back. For now." She nodded, though her mind was elsewhere. Why had Rowan called the retreat? They could as easily have had the upper hand—he could have pressed home his attack and wiped them out. Yet he hadn't. He had stopped, hesitated, then retreated. It made no sense. "We need to regroup," Marcus continued, oblivious. "Figure out why they attacked in the first place. "I'll speak with Father," Lena said, pulling her mind away from the thought. She needed answers, and their Alpha—her father—would have to provide them. Together, they made their way to their Alpha's tent, her remaining leaders having converged inside. The place was tense; anger and grief held the air down. Her father, a tall and bulky man with gray hair, looked up as they entered. "Lena, Marcus," he greeted them with a nod, but his eyes were hard. "What did you see out there?" Lena took in deep breaths, trying to describe the attack as best as she could, though she left in details of her confrontation with Rowan. That was too personal, too strange to share just yet. She needed to understand it herself before she could explain it to anyone else. "They came with full force," she finished. "But then they suddenly retreated. I don't get it." Her father's brow furrowed and he exchanged a look with the other elders. "This wasn't a raid," he said slowly. "It was something else. A message maybe. Or a test." "A test of what?" Marcus let his frustration show in his tone. "To see how strong we are," her father answered, heavy. "Or how weak. Rowan Ravenshade tests us, probing for weakness; we have to be prepared for whatever comes next." The council continued talking as plans were made to rebuild their defenses in case the Ravenshades tried to return. But Lena's mind barely caught any of it; her thoughts kept returning to the look Rowan had given her, the way he had held her but not harmed her. The meeting ended, and Lena left the tent, her head spinning with confusion and unfulfilled answers. Out the night was turning colder, the sky darkened without showing any stars in its many velvet folds. She looked at the forest, where Rowan and his pack had gone, somehow that felt like the direction she had to take. Something changed tonight, something more than just the physical battle. She couldn't explain it, but she knew whatever it was, it was far from over. Rowan Ravenshade had left her battered in more ways than one: more than skin and bruises, he had left her with doubt and that ill sense that from here on out, somehow intertwined were their fates. She curled her hands into fists, willing the thoughts to leave her brain. She couldn't afford to be distracted, not right now. The clan needed her more than ever to be strong, to retain her focus. But deep inside, she knew nothing could make her forget the look in Rowan's eyes and the way her heart had responded. And that terrified her more than anything else.
